Sloboda Ukraine

The Sloboda-Ukraine ( Ukrainian Слобідська Україна ; Russian Слободская Украина / Slobodskaja Ukraina or Слобожанщина / Sloboshanshchina ) was a historical region of the 17th and 18th centuries around the city of Kharkov . Originally belonging to the so-called Wild Field , it came under the control of Tsarist Russia in the course of the 17th century , whose line of spoilage against the Crimean Tatars was increasingly brought forward to the south. Refugees from parts of the Ukraine that were under Polish rule ensured that the region was settled quickly .
