Thomas "Tommy" Krappweis (born May 9, 1972 in Munich ) is a German author , comedian , director , producer , stunt performer and musician .

He became known as an ensemble member of the comedy series RTL Saturday Night , to which he belonged from 1995 to 1998, and as the inventor of the KiKA figure Bernd das Brot , for which he received the Adolf Grimme Prize in 2004 . In addition to his work as a screenwriter, director and film and television producer, he has also been writing children's and youth literature and autobiographical books since 2009. He filmed the first volume of his fantasy trilogy Mara and the Fire Bringer himself in 2013. He is the founder and managing director of the production company bumm film based in Otterfing near Munich .

Childhood and youth

Tommy Krappweis was born and raised in Munich- Neuperlach . He has a brother named Nico who is six years his junior. His father Werner Krappweis, a passionate athlete and multiple Bavarian racing bike champion, was a master car mechanic at Post, his mother Karin a gymnastics teacher. Later, together with his father, Krappweis wrote two autobiographical books about the sometimes life-threatening childhood experiences with his parents, who were crazy about wild camping and sports. His creative talent was already evident in his childhood. He was on stage for the first time as a second grader in the role of Karl Valentin in the sketch Im Zoologischer Garten , in third grade he wrote the play Pumuckl and the flu pills and shot his first stop-motion film on Super-8. At the age of 14 he spoke in various children's radio plays. After completing secondary school, Krappweis attended the Munich technical college for design, exhibited his own comics and made street music in the Munich pedestrian zone. He played drums and guitar and sang in the bands The Medleys and Ricky's Rockers . After graduating from college, he worked in the western town No Name City , an amusement park in Poing near Munich. There he was on stage several times a day in the saloon show, where he sang, danced and trained as Miss Annie Oakley , the great sniper , in target shooting. He later accompanied the western circus Red Grizzly Saloon , which roamed through Germany , wrote and choreographed the stunt shows and worked in the Hansa-Park as a Buster-Keaton double and stuntman. During this time he later wrote the book Four Fists for a Black Eye together with Heinz Bründl, the founder of No Name City .

Career

Krappweis started out as an actor and presenter, but now works mainly as a director, screenwriter and producer. Occasionally he can still be seen in small roles in Bernd das Bread or heard as a speaker. He had his first small television role at the age of 16 in Forsthaus Falkenau . He played his first real role in 1993 in the ZDF series SOKO 5113 . Three years later he was hired again for this series. In 1994, Tommy Krappweis presented the youth magazine Disney TV for RTL for seven months and also worked for it at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

RTL Saturday night

From autumn 1995 to April 30, 1998, Krappweis was shown on RTL Saturday Night , where he more and more often took the place behind the camera, writing, shooting and editing. Together with the authors Holger Schmidt , Ralf Betz and his colleague Mirco Nontschew he invented the series Far Out , in which the extreme sports wave was parodied, and anticipated such later developments as Jackass , which a few years later was a real broadcast on MTV established.

With Wigald Boning , Krappweis shot several clips on his own in the last year of the show . During the time at RTL Saturday Night , due to Far Out , Mirco Nontschew and Krappweis were more perceived as a team, but Krappweis continues to work with Wigald Boning to this day.

Krappweis founded the production company bumm film GmbH last year on RTL Saturday Night , initially to shoot clips himself with Wigald Boning and the author and director Matthias Edlinger , and to deliver them there as soon as they were cut and set to music. He was the director of Stefan Raab's video Schlimmer Finger (co-director: Matthias Edlinger) and was rarely seen in front of the camera until 2004. In 1998 he had a guest appearance with Mark Weigel in the RTL series Das Amt .

Bernd the bread

Krappweis can sometimes be seen together with Bernd dem Brot on KiKA . Bernd das Bread and his friends Briegel the Bush and Chili the Sheep were invented by Norman Cöster , Tommy Krappweis and Erik Haffner . Bernd das Brot has its origins in a joint meal by Cöster and Krappweis in an Italian restaurant, where bread was served in a basket before the meal. According to legend, Krappweis drew his colleague Norman as bread on a receipt pad. This drawing was shown publicly in the Deutsche Kinemathek in Berlin together with other original exhibits as part of the Heroes exhibition. In the slapstick-heavy episode Froschkönig , Krappweis can be seen in front of the camera as the knight Güldenstern . Director and author Erik Haffner from bumm film GmbH was involved in the fairy tale hour. Author and actor Norman Cöster was responsible for several scripts.

ProSieben Funny Movies

For the film series ProSieben Funny Movie , Tommy Krappweis provided several scripts and script revisions. Some of the visual effects, sound design and music came from his company bumm film GmbH. For the Rambo parody Rookie - Fast flat with Axel Stein in the lead role, bumm film GmbH took care of the filming, script / direction (TC) and post-production for RatPack Filmproduktion.

The 12-part TV series for Tommy Krappweis 'book Das Vorzelt zur Hölle ran on the Austrian television channel Servus TV from April 29, 2012. Mara and the fire bringer

Even when writing the novels, Tommy Krappweis, according to his own statement, had a film adaptation of his fantasy trilogy in mind. Together with the producer Alexander Dannenberg , he was able to win the broadcaster RTL as a partner for the filming of the first book. Krappweis wrote the script himself in collaboration with the dramaturge Sebastian Voss . The author was also the director himself. The film was produced by Christian Becker and his Rat Pack Filmproduktion , with Constantin Film distributing it . The post production was done by Krappweis' company bumm film GmbH and its subsidiary BigHugFX, which was founded in 2013 especially for the film project. The realization of the special effects was supervised by VFX supervisor John Nugent , in whose vita there are genre reproductions such as the film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings , The Chronicles of Narnia or The Matrix . The title role of Mara Lorbeer is played by Lilian Prent . Jan Josef Liefers , Esther Schweins and Christoph Maria Herbst can also be seen in other roles . The first excerpts from the film were shown in October 2013 at the fantasy convention Ring * Con . The premiere was on March 29, 2015 in Cologne, and it was released in cinemas on April 2, 2015.

The VFX studio BigHugFX, founded by Krappweis and led by VFX producer Benedikt Laubenthal , produces visual effects for film, television and advertising and is active on the national and international market. The studio's best-known productions include the award-winning comedy series Sketch History , Creed - Rocky's Legacy , the remake of The Magnificent Seven, and the series Pastewka and Lost in Space . Until June 2018, Krappweis managed the company together with Laubenthal, but then left as managing director.

Tommy Krappweis' first work as a book author was the four-part children's book series about a boy who can turn into an adult for about an hour with the help of a magical pocket watch. Mara and the fire bringer

In September 2009, Krappweis' first novel Mara and the Fire Bringer was also published by Franz Schneider Verlag. It is the first volume in a fantasy trilogy about the 14-year-old Mara Lorbeer, who just wants to be normal and inconspicuous, but then learns that she, of all people , is supposed to stop the threatening Götterdämmerung . The book is "a mix of Harry Potter , Da Vinci Code / The Da Vinci Code and Germanic mythology ." In order to be able to present all the facts about the Teutons and their religion up to date with the latest scientific developments, Tommy Krappweis worked on the project with the Scandinavian Rudolf Simek from the University of Bonn , who also wrote the appendix with explanations of names and terms.

Volume II Mara and the Fire Bringer - The Death Mark was published in 2010. The presentation took place in the Museum and Park Varusschlacht in Osnabrücker Land, also known as the Museum and Park Kalkriese , as this museum plays an important role in the book. Other real locations in the trilogy include the Munich Ludwigsbrücke , the forester's house in Mühlthal near Starnberg and the Hermannsdenkmal in Detmold .

Volume III is entitled Mara and the Fire Bringer - Götterdämmerung and closes the trilogy. Release date was October 2011.

At the end of 2018, a completely revised and expanded new edition of the trilogy was published as a limited Extended Collectors Edition by Krappweis. The special edition was supplemented by an extra volume with bonus material on the making of the books and the film, a glossary and a Mara short story.

Krappweis has been working on a sequel to the Mara trilogy since 2017. The working title of the new trilogy is Mara and the Wolf Brothers . According to Tommy Krappweis, the starting point of the story is the fate of the prince's son Thumelicus and the myth of the berserkers .

At the end of February 2012, Droemer Knaur Verlag published his first autobiographical book Das Vorzelt zur Hölle , which he wrote together with his father Werner Krappweis . It's a humorous description of his childhood camping holidays in the seventies. Father and son take turns, each from his point of view, describing the often bizarre and sometimes life-threatening experiences during wild camping holidays on stony beaches and far from civilization achievements. The adventurous father sees things very differently than the camping-hating son. The book stayed in the Spiegel bestseller list for 18 weeks, with the best placement 21.

Four fists for a black eye

The book Four Fists for a Black Eye , also published by Droemer Knaur, contains the memories of Tommy Krappweis and Heinz Bründl , the founders of the Western amusement park No Name City in Poing near Munich. In it, both report on their time in No Name City , where Krappweis worked for several years as a stunt man and stunt coordinator and appeared in the stage shows. Release date was August 2013.

Ghostsitter

The five-volume fantasy series for children aged 10 and up tells the story of fourteen-year-old Tom, who inherits a ghost train in which all ghosts and monsters are real. The radio play versions are written by Krappweis himself, who also directed all the radio plays and sings the title song together with YouTuber Bina Bianca. He is also involved as a speaker. The cast also includes a. Christoph Maria Herbst , Hugo Egon Balder , Wigald Boning , Kai Taschner , Paulina Rümmelein and Bernhard Hoëcker . The main role "Tom" is spoken by Felix Strüven . The first season comprised volumes 1 and 2, the second season, which was published in spring 2018, and volumes 3 and 4. The fifth and so far last volume was published in early 2019 as season 3. Season 4 was the first sequel to the book series, published only as a radio play, in April 2019. Sportlerkind is the third autobiographical book and follows on from the work Das Vorzelt zur Hölle . Other works

Tommy Krappweis has been working on a retelling of the legends about the mountain spirit Rübezahl since 2013 . The bumm film filmed a documentary on the subject that was sponsored by the Thuringian State Chancellery .

In May 2017, Piper Verlag published the first book by Bavarian comedian Harry G Unter Deppen. About life with the Isarpreißn and other cattle , of which Krappweis is a co-author.

He is also co-author of the second book by YouTuber Florian Mundt, alias LeFloid . The biography Willkommen im Real Life emerged from a long interview by Krappweis with Mundt and was published by Piper Verlag in 2018.

Radio plays

Since 2017, Krappweis' production company bumm film has also been producing radio plays on behalf of Audible Studios, which are recorded in the in-house recording studio. Tommy Krappweis has been playing and singing in the band Harpo Speaks since 1992 !! , a "session band" that improvises together with a pool of up to 14 musicians live on stage.

For the ProSieben fairy tale hour Rotkäppchen , bumm-film's own band recorded the song Far Beyond the Right Path, composed by Krappweis, live in the studio. For this format, Krappweis sang the title song in Karel Gott style , which was designed by Karel Svoboda . For the ProSieben Funny Movie, play me the song and you'll be dead! Tommy Krappweis, together with his brother Nico and the composer Andreas Lenz von Ungern-Sternberg, played well-known pop songs in bluegrass versions suitable for westerners and wrote the title track.
