Mara und der Feuerbringer is a German fantasy film from 2015. It is the film adaptation of the first volume in the novel trilogy of the same name by Tommy Krappweis , who also wrote and directed the script. The focal point of the story is 15-year-old Mara Lorbeer, who learns that she is the last Nordic-Germanic seer and is supposed to prevent the threatening Götterdämmerung. She jumps back and forth between the world of the present and the world of Nordic - Germanic mythology and meets Loki, Thor, Siegfried and the dangerous fire bringer. Although Mara and the Fire Bringer is a fantasy film, it was important to writer and director Tommy Krappweis that the representation of Nordic-Germanic mythology is based on current scientific knowledge. As with the novels, the film's specialist advisor was the Scandinavian Professor Rudolf Simek .

The film was produced by Christian Becker and his company Rat Pack Filmproduktion in coproduction with RTL Television and in collaboration with Krappweis' production company bumm film . Lilian Prent plays the title role of Mara Lorbeer in her first feature film. Jan Josef Liefers , Esther Schweins , Christoph Maria Herbst and Eva Habermann can also be seen in other roles . The world premiere took place on March 29, 2015 in Cologne. It was released on April 2, 2015.

action

Starting position

15-year-old Mara Lorbeer lives in Munich in the Au and actually only wants one thing: to be "normal". Instead, she has been haunted by gloomy visions every day since she was 12, is considered an outsider at school because of her daydreams and has a mother who is enthusiastic about esotericism , who drags her from the meadow to the Wiccas tree-speaking seminars . After one of these seminars she meets a speaking branch who is supposed to convey the message of an unknown client to her. She learns from him that she is a Spákona, a Nordic-Germanic seer, and that her task is to prevent the Twilight of the Gods ( Ragnarök ). In a vision she sees Thor and his brother, the demigod Loki , who was tied to a rock by the gods forever as a punishment for his deeds and has been tormented there for over 2000 years by the dripping poison of a snake. Now Loki threatens to break free from the shackles and could trigger the end of the world. Mara only reluctantly accepts the task assigned to her and looks for university professor Reinhold Weissinger, a specialist in Nordic-Germanic mythology. Weissinger doubts her descriptions and Mara leaves his office at the University of Munich disappointed. Only when he discovers a drawing by Mara depicting the Midgard snake as Mara saw it in her visions does Professor Weissinger become curious and contact her again. When Mara takes him into one of her visions and he meets Thor and Loki there, he realizes that she is telling the truth and decides - enthusiastic about the possibility of being able to experience the Nordic-Germanic mythology for himself in this way - to help the girl .

Further course

Mara continues to be beset by visions and by men with threatening black eyes who call on her to help. As it turns out, it's Loki who is speaking to her that way. She looks for him in the cave where he is tied up on a stone and learns that his wife Sigyn , who protected him from the snake's burning poison with her magical wooden bowl, was kidnapped by a fire creature. Loki asks her to bring Sigyn back to him, otherwise he'll tear himself away. With the help of Loki's godly power, Mara transported herself to the volcano of the fire-bringer and there she found the chained Sigyn and the huge fire-bringer, consisting of many small flames, who called himself lodge and called himself god. Without Sigyn, but with the magic bowl, Mara returns to Loki and assures him that she will do anything to free Sigyn.

At school, Mara and a classmate are bullied again and again by the malicious Larissa and her clique. Angry and - strengthened by Loki's godly power - finally able to defend herself, Mara lets Larissa see a vision of the gigantic, terrifying Midgard snake. Larissa collapses in fear and comes to the hospital. Mara, terrified of her new power and the satisfaction she felt in using it against a person, is appalled at herself and wants nothing more to do with all of this. Only when she visits Larissa in the hospital and speaks with her does she reconcile with her gift.

She decides to get help and, with the support of Professor Weissinger, to visit the dragon slayer Siegfried from the Nibelungen saga. She goes with Weissinger to the Munich Residence , the place she was shown again and again in her visions, and from there with the professor she is transported to Gnitaheide, where the legend of Siegfried killed the lindworm . But before that happens, the two are discovered and attacked by the dragon. In a panic, Mara transports herself and the professor back to the Munich residence and only there realizes that she has accidentally brought Siegfried and the Lindwurm into her time. In the fountain courtyard of the residence, the Lindwurm destroys a medieval market taking place there and only with difficulty does Mara manage to transport herself, Weissinger, Siegfried and the Lindwurm directly into the volcanic world of the fire-bringer. After first the Lindwurm and then Siegfried fail to destroy Loge, Mara realizes how to destroy the fire bringer. After he disappears, Sigyn can be freed, and without the Fire Bringer's magic, everything can take its place back where it belongs. Siegfried returns to his time, Sigyn to Loki in the cave, Mara and the professor in the fountain courtyard, where Mara speaks a forgetting spell about all visitors.

Mara and the professor realize what a good team they are and that the adventure is far from over. And Mara realizes that she was never really alone, but always had her mother and her mother her.

reception

The film-dienst described Mara and the fire-bringer as an "exciting time travel film" that coherently tells "of the protagonist becoming herself". The BILD newspaper recommended the film: “Bravo! Finally a German fantasy film about local sagas and myths, not a copy of Hollywood. "The German film magazine Cinema , on the other hand, panned the film:" The bumpy plot and the cheap tricks make the result look rather dusty. "

A criticism of the DPA was taken up many times . a. from the Süddeutsche Zeitung: “Tommy Krappweis staged the first volume of his fantasy trilogy of the same name as an action-packed spectacle. Definitely too exciting for six-year-olds, but exciting fun for older children. "The game magazine GameStar wrote about the film:" Mara and the Fire Bringer is not a new Lord of the Rings, but a very good fantasy family film from Germany - and there is not that many since the never-ending story over 30 years ago. "

The former ZDF series boss Josef Göhlen praised the film in his article on kressreport about the German family film as a positive example: “Anyone who has seen the film with curiosity and without reservation must confess that it [...] succeeded, a real and At the same time, to tell a magical story in the here and now with witty dialogues spanning time and generations, with interesting characters and skilfully staged show effects [...] - and all this to a budget that is so negligibly small compared to international productions of the genre that you can want to applaud the project alone. ”Due to the great response in the industry, Kress published a much-noticed reply from Tommy Krappweis two weeks later, in which he explained the problems with the release of his film as well as the general difficulties of family and genre films in German cinema described.

After a box office failure, the film was recommended on social networks and / or through newsletters from Ring * Con , FedCon , the Role Play Convention , the Fantasy and RPG Convention and many more. The Star Wars Fan Portal 501st Legion of the German Garrison wrote: “A film that definitely deserves to be named in the same breath as 'The Neverending Story'. A film that is definitely suitable for all age groups and offers fun for the whole family. ”The largest German steampunk portal Clockworker wrote:“ The unwavering attention to detail, the use of all available resources - from imagination to willing and physical Use of the wide fantastic scene and the special humor of a Krappweis - make 'Mara and the Fire Bringer' a genre gem of German film production that doesn't have to hide behind Hollywood. "

All these efforts were a flop , however, did not prevent the film. But when Tommy Krappweis showed the film as a director at the Role Play Convention, it was unexpectedly breathed new life. It ran in the cinema tent, which was organized at short notice, not only twice as planned, but in a continuous loop: "This has now developed into a real Mara tour to various conventions and medieval events," said Krappweis in the announcement of the Mara screening at Fantasy - and role-playing convention.
