The German Children's Cancer Foundation (DKKS) is a Bonn- based non-profit organization that is committed to combating cancer in children and adolescents and tries to help those affected deal with the disease.

history

In 1995 the German Childhood Cancer Foundation was founded by the umbrella organization of the regional parent groups Deutsche Leukemia Research Aid, Campaign for Children with Cancer (DLFH).

The German Children's Cancer Foundation has been running the Waldpiraten-Camp near Heidelberg since 2003 , a recreational facility that is unique in German-speaking countries and aims to help children with cancer relax. In 2004 the foundation received the "Health Award Call Sign" for the camp.

In 2008 the Waldpiraten-Camp was awarded the Aftercare Prize of the German Childhood Cancer Aftercare . In 2009 the camp for children with cancer was honored by the initiative “ Germany - Land of Ideas ” as one of 365 outstanding locations.

In 2012, the "Mutperlen" project initiated by the foundation in Germany was awarded the "pulsus award" health award by Techniker Krankenkasse and Bild am Sonntag. The 20th rainbow trip carried out by the DKKS - an annual one-week bike tour of young adults who were diagnosed with cancer themselves in childhood and adolescence and where acutely ill children are visited in the pediatric oncology treatment centers along the way to encourage them - was recognized in 2012 by the location initiative "Germany - Land of Ideas" as one of 365 outstanding projects in Germany and also won the audience award of this competition in a nationwide vote.

activity

Every year around 2,000 children in Germany develop cancer. The DKKS sees it as its task to support affected children and adolescents and their families and to improve the chances of recovery, treatment methods and the quality of life for children with cancer. DLFH and the German Childhood Cancer Foundation represent the interests of 74 parents' associations in Germany and the families affected and are closely linked to one another through the statutes. According to their own information, the German Childhood Cancer Foundation and DLFH represent more than 20,000 individuals in Germany.

The foundation particularly supports clinic-related, patient-oriented research projects. According to the 2008 annual report, around a quarter of German studies on therapy optimization in pediatric cancer medicine were financed exclusively by the DKKS. The aim is to improve the chances of recovery, ensure safe treatments, find new therapeutic approaches and reduce or avoid long-term effects. One of the tasks of the foundation is to provide financial support for families who have got into financial difficulties due to a child's cancer. Information events for affected families and the young cancer patients are also part of the work. The German Children's Cancer Foundation has been the sponsor of the SyltKlinik since 2015.

Board of Directors and Board of Trustees

All members - representatives of parents' groups, representatives of public life and doctors - are involved in the foundation's supervisory body on a voluntary basis and free of charge. The chairman of the twelve-person board of trustees is Günter Henze. The board consists of affected parents. The board is elected every two years by the general assembly or the foundation's board of trustees.

The current board members are Benedikt Geldmacher (Chairman), Alexander Bahn, Corinna Fulst, Jan Klemm, Bärbel Dütemeyer, Peter Hennig, Stefanie Baldes and Regina Schnabel.

financing

According to the annual report, the work of the foundation is financed almost exclusively from donations and membership fees. In addition to individual donations, campaigns by associations, schools, organizations and companies, benefit events, fines, inheritances and legacies, the German Childhood Cancer Foundation is also supported by celebrities. The foundation is entitled to use the DZI donation seal . The donation seal is only given to organizations that voluntarily submit to a test procedure and demonstrably use their donations responsibly, economically and transparently.
