Otterfing was first mentioned in a document in 1003 in a tradition book of the Tegernsee monastery as "Otolvinga". After many different spellings of place is in the already 1568 Bairischen country panels of Philipp Apian called Otterfing.

Otterfing has been an independent political municipality since the administrative reforms in Bavaria in 1818.
