Teufelsgraben between Holzkirchen and Dietramszell

The Teufelsgraben is an approx. 23 km long, largely dry valley in the Bavarian foothills of the Alps, on the southern edge of the Munich gravel plain between the Kirchsee near Sachsenkam in Tölzer Land and the Mangfallknie near Grub in the Valley municipality .

History of origin

As at the end of about 20,000 years ago Würm the Isar-Loisach glacier abschmolz, a mighty river, which was looking for an outlet to the north was. At that time, glacier debris from the Karwendel Mountains clogged the course of the Isar and this dug into the valley of the Teufelsgraben , starting at Reutberg Monastery in 4000 years. Before the Mangfallknee was formed, the water continued to flow through what is now the Grub-Harthausener dry valley . After the Mangfall was diverted into the basin of the former Inn Glacier (now the Mangfallknie) and the resulting deepening of the Mangfall, the water of the Teufelsgraben dug to its present depth.

Later, the Isar flooded its old and current course again, and in the Teufelsgraben there are only some small streams. The Kirchseebach , the outlet of the Kirchsee , runs in its southwestern beginning, and seeps away in the area where the Teufelsgraben crosses the St 2073 connecting road from Dietramszell to Holzkirchen. The valley floor is covered by meadows, floodplains and small lakes, the slopes are mostly densely forested, sometimes crossed by Nagelfluhfelsen .

The Devil's Trench has always been an obstacle for people. Roads, paths and railway lines had to overcome the deeply cut valley. For the Munich drinking water pipeline, the Teufelsgraben was spanned with a 91 meter long and 19 meter high aqueduct , the Teufelsgraben Bridge, built around 1890 .
