Aqueduct over the Teufelsgraben near Grub

The Teufelsgrabenbrücke is a massive arched bridge made of rammed concrete that was built in 1890 for a long-distance water pipeline for the drinking water supply of Munich near Grub in the municipality of Valley in the Miesbach district over the Teufelsgraben . Since 1998 the actual task of the aqueduct has been taken over by a culvert . The bridge is a listed building (file number: D-1-82-133-19)

Building

The bridge is 91 m long, approx. 19 m high, 2.8 m wide and the span of the four arches is 14 m each. It was developed by Dyckerhoff and Widmann in stamped concrete construction without reinforcement built and completed on 24 November 1890th This method of construction was used from around 1888 until the First World War, especially for elevated water tanks, gas tanks and bridges. The structure is monolithic and has no joints or joints over its entire length. The concrete was with rusticated decorated -Imitation and the arch keystones bear the Munich city arms, the Münchner Kindl . The four arcs are roughly in the shape of semicircles.

Construction process

First the bridge arches were concreted on a falsework , then the gaps were filled in layers. The spaces in between were given a circular opening above each pillar.

Structural damage

Gapping cracks have formed on the bridge, especially at the apex of the two outer arches. The cracks can be traced back to thermal expansions and different pillar subsidence. According to experts, the stability is not impaired.

In 2010 the city of Munich applied to be allowed to demolish the bridge. On the other hand, there is resistance among others from bridge construction experts and the Valley community , who want to preserve the bridge as a structural monument from the early days of concrete construction. You have launched a call to preserve the bridge.
