Waakirchen is a municipality in the west of the Upper Bavarian district of Miesbach .

Geographical location
Waakirchen lies on the lateral moraine between the former Isar and Tegernsee glaciers.
The village of Waakirchen is located on the federal highway 472 between Bad Tölz (eight kilometers) and Miesbach (twelve kilometers). After Holzkirchen and the Federal Highway 8 is 16 km, Tegernsee just five kilometers and after Munich km 48th

Church planting
Waakirchen became an independent political municipality in the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria in 1818.
Incorporations
On May 1, 1978, the community of Schaftlach was incorporated as part of the regional reform .

Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 4,795 to 5,801 by 1,006 inhabitants or 21%.

Norbert Kerkel is mayor of the Waakirchen community. He was elected to office in the 2020 local elections with 54.3% of the valid votes in the runoff election. He is the son of the former mayor of Waakirchen and former Miesbach district administrator Norbert Kerkel .

The description of the coat of arms reads: "Under a silver shield head, in it two green sea leaves crossed with stems, a golden morning star and a golden miner's hammer crossed in blue."

Buildings
The Oberland monument is located at the confluence of Tegernseer Straße with the B 472 . This memorial, inaugurated on August 20, 1905 in the presence of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria , commemorates those who died at the Sendlinger Murder Christmas in December 1705. The lion with the lance comes from Hygin Kiene , who created four reliefs on the base (scenes from the Sendlinger Murder Christmas) the Munich sculptor Anton Kaindl .
In the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche in Schaftlach hangs the Schaftlacher Kreuz , one of the oldest monumental crucifixes . During a restoration it turned out that the cross can be dated to approx. 970. It is believed that it comes from the Tegernsee monastery .
In the municipality of Georgenried is the St. Georg branch church , a small, single-nave late Gothic building from the years 1525–1528 with early baroque altars.

In the district of Schaftlach there is a rail connection to the Holzkirchen – Lenggries railway line and the Schaftlach – Tegernsee railway line . The routes are operated by the Bayerische Oberlandbahn . The trains run from Schaftlach every hour to Holzkirchen, Munich, Lenggries and Tegernsee .
