Oberland Monument
The Oberland monument in Waakirchen in Upper Bavaria was inaugurated in 1905 on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Sendlinger Murder Christmas . The name comes from the name Bayerisches Oberland , the starting point of the peasant uprising.
location
The memorial stands at the confluence of State Road 2365 with Federal Road 472, about five kilometers north of Lake Tegernsee .
history
To commemorate those who fell on the Sendlinger Murder Christmas in December 1705 , the Oberland memorial was erected at the possible birthplace of the leader of the uprising, the blacksmith von Kochel . Waakirchen was supported by the historian Nepomuk Sepp . The monument was unveiled on August 20, 1905 in the presence of HRH Prince Ludwig of Bavaria . Balthasar Mayer, born on January 6, 1644 in Waakirchen, is said to be identical to the blacksmith von Kochel.
Every year on December 24th, the mountain rifle companies commemorate the fallen of the peasant uprising after a mass at the foot of the memorial.
execution
The structure of the monument was architecturally designed by the curator of the Bavarian National Museum . It shows a seated Bavarian lion on a stone plinth , looking north towards Sendling. In front of the lion is the so-called "peasant flag". The figure is made of copper for reasons of cost and comes from Hygin Kiene .
The four reliefs on the base show scenes from the Sendlinger Murder Christmas, created by the Munich sculptor Anton Kaindl .
A necessary restoration was carried out in 1985.
