The Holzkirchen – Lenggries railway is a single-track, non-electrified railway line in Bavaria . It is routed as the main line from Holzkirchen to Bad Tölz , and as a branch line from Bad Tölz to Lenggries .
history
The railway line was opened in two sections, the first section to Bad Tölz was opened on June 1, 1874. In 1905, a postal service from Bad Tölz to Lenggries was set up. The extension of the railway line to Lenggries went into operation on September 3, 1924.
On the evening of June 8, 1975, the Warngau railway accident occurred between Warngau and Schaftlach . 41 people were killed and 126 injured in a head-on collision between two express trains .
At that time, Warngau was still a train station. In the meantime, it has been downgraded to a stopping point and only has one track.
Local trains of the Bavarian Oberlandbahn have been running on the route on behalf of the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) since November 29, 1998 .
Routing
The line leaves Holzkirchen station in a south-easterly direction. The Mangfall Valley Railway branches off to the east in the direction of Rosenheim. The Holzkirchen – Schliersee railway runs east to the southern outskirts, and then also turns east. The first stop is Warngau. After crossing a forest, you reach Schaftlach. Here the route branches off to Tegernsee . The route turns west near Waakirchen and finally reaches Bad Tölz via Reichersbeuern. From here the railway follows the Isar valley to Lenggries in a southerly direction .
Future prospects
According to the concept of the Bavarian state government for more electromobility on the rails in Bavaria, Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann proposed the route for electrification from a Bavarian perspective.
