The Integral S5D95 is a local train from the production of Integral Verkehrstechnik AG , Jenbach , Austria, which was shut down at the end of 2001 . The manufacturer originally offered a product range consisting of multiple units in different lengths and with different drive variants (diesel and electric).

However, only 17 five-unit diesel multiple units of the type S5 D95 were built for the Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB). The Integral S5D95 had considerable starting difficulties, but recently managed a volume of over 12 million passengers and approx. 3.1 million vehicle kilometers and 60,000 coupling processes per year. All BOB multiple units were withdrawn from operation between June and July 2020 and replaced by new Alstom Coradia LINTs .

Development and concept

The Integral was originally developed by Rudolf Sommerer for the modernization of the Vienna S-Bahn .

The modular concept made it possible to adapt to the requirements of the various transport companies not only in terms of drive technology, but also in terms of vehicle technology. There were motor coaches and carriages and wheelchair-less sedan chairs. The draft concept contained up to eleven-section single and double-deck vehicles.

The Jenbacher AG transport systems and their daughter Integral Verkehrstechnik AG Jenbach (IVT) received by the newly founded BOB ( DEGAG and the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway ) commissioned to take the timetable change in May 1998 the integral operation. The 17 units of the Integral were all delivered to the BOB as diesel versions. However, with the start of regular operations, some deficiencies became apparent very quickly, which brought negative press reports to the train and the BOB, which ultimately also meant the end for the IVT. In 2000 the 17 Integrals were taken out of service and completely revised by the manufacturer IVT with the help of Molinari Rail . After the deficiencies had been remedied, the Integral was used again at the BOB for the 2001 timetable change. Since then, operations have been more reliable, which is also reflected in the increasing number of passengers.

At the balance sheet press conference on April 27, 2001, the manufacturer put the loss caused by the driving problems at 260 to 300 million schillings. This corresponded to around 40 percent of the order value of 40.6 million schillings per train.

With the closure of the IVT, the rights to build further integral articulated trains were initially transferred to the BOB and thus its owner Connex, today Transdev GmbH . Connex, with a 30% stake in IVT, and the then newly acquired partner ADtranz , planned to build the Integral in Nuremberg. This failed with the sale of ADtranz to Bombardier . Since Bombardier builds and sells the Bombardier Talent in this area of application , Bombardier has no interest in producing the Integral again in series. Today, the manufacturing rights were transferred to Molinari Rail AG, which took over the IVT engineering team in 2006. Molinari Rail Austria GmbH operates from Schwaz, Tyrol.

In addition to the usual standards such as an automatic Scharfenberg coupling for multiple traction with up to five units, high acceleration and the modular, handicapped-accessible structure with low-floor entry and air conditioning , the Integral also contains some innovations such as the " virtual bogie ", underfloor heating in the entry area and a closed toilet system with bio-reactor. In addition, the BOB has set up a children's play area on all trains.

Use in the wing system

The Integral was used by the BOB on the routes of the Bavarian Oberland and Munich . A train consisted of three individual trains - four in rush hour traffic - and began in Munich Central Station . The units then drove hourly with the intermediate stops at Donnersbergerbrücke, Harras and Siemenswerke (Mon-Fri) and Solln (on weekends and public holidays) at up to 140 km / h to Holzkirchen . There, the front pulling part was winged and drove a short stay towards Bayrischzell , the other two units went on together to Schaftlach , here these units were separated, with the rear pulling part as a further Flügelzug to Tegernsee and the front pulling part about Bad Toelz to Lenggries drove . The BOB depot is located in Lenggries. On the way back from Lenggries, the Lenggries unit coupled with the Tegernsee unit and both drove to Holzkirchen together. The unit from Bayrischzell was already waiting there.

The advantage of the wing system , in addition to the lower personnel costs (only one train driver), is the savings in train path fees that have to be paid to the network operator after the kilometer and train.

The wing system with circulation at the BOB:

  • Unit 1: Munich - Bayrischzell - Munich - Tegernsee - Munich - Lenggries - Munich
  • Unit 2: Munich - Lenggries - Munich - Bayrischzell - Munich - Tegernsee - Munich
  • Unit 3: Munich - Tegernsee - Munich - Lenggries - Munich - Bayrischzell - Munich

Modular system

The Integral was designed as a modular system in order to meet the requirements of regional to S-Bahn traffic in various configurations . For this purpose, railcars and carriages as well as sedan chairs (gondolas) that are hung in between are available. The trains could be configured with 3, 5, 7, 9 or 11 sections.

The Integral S5D95, as it operated on the BOB, has two normal-floor end railcars and a normal-floor middle carriage. Low-floor, wheelless segments with doors are hung between each end railcar and the middle carriage. One of the end cars is equipped with two motors, each of which transmits its power to one axle via a gearbox. The other end car is equipped with a motor that transfers its power to an axle.

Active drive

Instead of conventional bogies , the Integral has an active chassis, in which a pair of air-sprung wheel sets form a virtual bogie in each bogie module and are hydraulically adjusted radially according to the articulation angle of the two car bodies to match the current curve radius . This minimizes wear on wheels and rails .

Names

Based on the tradition of the Royal Bavarian State Railways and other private railways today , the Bavarian Oberlandbahn has named its integral trains after locations along the routes.

Retirement at the BOB

Between June and July 2020, the Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB) successively replaced all 17 integral trains with new Alstom LINT vehicles . Reasons for this include the significantly higher environmental friendliness of the new vehicles (86% lower nitrogen oxide emissions compared to integral trains), which also promise considerable progress in passenger comfort through significantly reduced noise pollution. The supply of spare parts for the Integral trains has also been severely limited since the company's insolvency in 2001. Furthermore, the trains of the Integral and TALENT types cannot be coupled with each other, which is impractical in the BOB wing system. What will happen to the Integral trains after they are retired is not yet known.
