Bernd das Brot is a character on the children's television channel KiKA . It is a talking and mostly depressed white box bread with very short arms, as his hands are directly on the loaf , which represents the torso including the head. He can be seen in the Bernd das Brot series, in the Kika night loops and in Bernd & Friends . Before that he also appeared in the shows Chili TV , Tolle Dinge , Bravo Bernd , Bernd das Brot and Berndivent .

Bernd das Brot has been featured in the television series at KiKA since 2000. The figure became known to many adult TV viewers in 2003 when KiKA showed a loop with selected Bernd films from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. - officially not broadcast. Due to his nature, Bernd das Brot has found many adult fans and received a lot of media attention. He has achieved cult status with his fans . In 2004 "Bernd das Brot" was awarded the Adolf Grimme Prize .

About Bernd the bread

Bernd has a fatalistic and depressive character. According to his own statements, he belongs to the genus Homo Brotus Depressivus ("depressed bread man"). His favorite pastimes are, for example, staring at his south face at home, learning the pattern of the woodchip wallpaper by heart, reading his favorite magazine The Desert and You , watching test images on TV or expanding his collection of the most boring railroad routes on video. Bernd likes to drink lukewarm gruel and very often uses the expression "crap!"

In the 85th episode of the show Great Stuff, it was possible to find out why Bernd is (almost) always so depressed. He says: “[…] A long, long time ago I fell in love with a beautiful, slim baguette. She was so incredibly charming and funny. But unfortunately it was in vain. She only had eyes for this multigrain bread that ran along with its ten types of grain. It was so depressing. [...] Since then my heart has been a dry lump of flour. "

Bernd has to come to terms with the other main characters Briegel the Bush and Chili the Sheep (whom he usually calls the (crazy) bush and the (crazy) sheep ), who drag him along on each of their adventures, which he usually tries to avoid.

idea

The official version is that the figure of the short-armed loaf of bread appeared for the first time as part of an advertising campaign for a bakery chain. It is said that because the campaign flopped, Bernd had to go to work at KiKA and that is why he always looks so depressed.

An allusion to the appearance of "Bernd dem Brot" between Tommy Krappweis and Norman Cöster

In reality, Bernd was invented on a napkin when his inventor Tommy Krappweis sketched the first ideas for a new KiKA mascot . He portrayed a white bread in a pizzeria and gave it the appearance of his friend Norman Cöster , who in addition to his facial features should also have various characteristics of Bernd. Tommy Krappweis himself served as a template for Chili the Sheep, which - just like Tommy in the past - annoys those around him with senseless stunts , while Briegel der Busch was modeled on the "technical director" of the production company bumm film , Michael Briegel. He, too, is said to have a tendency towards destruction. An anecdote makes the rounds that he is said to have set an editorial computer on fire. Bernd is played and spoken by the puppeteer Jörg Teichgraeber .

The actual character designs by Bernd dem Bread and Briegel dem Busch come from the comic artist Georg Graf von Westphalen . The idea of letting bread speak is not new, however. In Germany, for example, as early as 1978 in episode 14 of season 1 of the Muppet Show, what he said was very sick toast had a brief appearance as a patient in the veterinary clinic.

Broadcasts about Bernd the bread

Great stuff

Great stuff was a five- to seven-minute format and “the only commercial in KI.KA”. The program structure is mostly simple. Chili the sheep is usually late for the show because of a stunt on her motorcycle . Briegel der Busch presented the respective "bestsellers", with everything from a cuckoo clock to a video camera to a moon rocket . The respective "test candidate" - whichever is Bernd the bread - is drawn from a lottery drum and is supposed to test this product despite all refusals and excuses. Most of the time it explodes or doesn't work in some other way, which ends up in chaos. The article is therefore very rarely sold.

The “great things” presented are regularly one of Briegel's inventions, which - mostly untested by Briegel - is presented. These have a designation that consists of the purpose of the invention, an attribute such as “super” or “mega” and a number or version number in any repetition and order. Often the “great things” presented by Briegel are announced by a drawn out “moment” and re-bolted (→ rebuilt) in order to be able to test new functions or by Bernd (→ suitable for bread). The product name is always extended according to the scheme mentioned. When the product has been adequately tested or the studio has sunk into chaos, Briegel or Chili usually say goodbye to the audience with “Bye, see you next time”, to which Bernd always adds “Hopefully not!”. The production team often makes an appearance, mostly through “great things” that fly in the direction of the team or through supposedly unexplained processes.

The first show with Chili, Briegel and Bernd was great things . The first episodes ran on September 2, 2000, the last on December 20, 2002. By the beginning of 2010, the total of 242 episodes were repeated with short interruptions and changing broadcast times, but not in chronological order. There were no newer episodes. For the fifth anniversary on December 31, 2005, KiKA presented a newly filmed 5-year Tolle Dinge Gala .

The first season is no longer shown because a different-looking Briegel doll was used here. Furthermore, three episodes are no longer shown due to complaints from parents.

  • In the episode Baby Tyrann , a talking doll is presented that, when angry, gets red eyes and speaks in a very deep voice. This is said to have scared some children.
  • In the washing machine episode , Chili performs a stunt in a running washing machine , which is why some parents complained that children could act out this.
  • In addition, the following slide is no longer shown in which Bernd is wrapped in cling film , which could lead to suffocation when replaying .

Chili TV

In Chili TV , the adventures of Chili, Briegel and Bernd were shown outside of their work as moderators of Tolle Dinge . In addition to their experiences while traveling or in Briegel's apartment, there are parodies of Star Trek ( USS Bumblebee Bush ), Harry Potter ( Berndi Broter and the Box of Disasters ), Westerns ( Fuzzy Briegel Saloon ), fairy tales and weather reports. The broadcast started on October 6, 2001 with a running time of just 15 minutes. In September 2002, KiKA expanded the program to 60 minutes, although 35–40 minutes were allotted to animated series.

Another concept change took place in September 2004. The transmission time was reduced to 25 minutes. Instead, the cartoons, which caused displeasure among the numerous adult fans in particular, were omitted and the broadcast format was redesigned. From now on, each episode has a framework story ( Bei Briegel ), into which the individual series such as USS Bumblebee Bush , Fuzzy Briegel Saloon or In Order of the Stone are inserted. In addition, since the beginning of these new episodes, a new Briegel doll has been used, which only resembled the previous one to a limited extent and was criticized by many fans for its grinning appearance and the sudden presence of a nose. The producers justified with exposure problems with the old doll. For the 2005 season, the doll was redesigned and the grin removed; the nose can be seen more clearly.

From 2006 onwards, no new episodes were produced by Chili TV ; instead, episodes of the new Berndivent series were repeated as a two -part series on Chili TV . In April / May 2007 eight "Bernd Specials" were shown, which contain thematic compilations from old Chili TV episodes.

Bravo Bernd

Bravo Bernd (subtitle: The Somewhat Different Sandman ) ran every day from January 1, 2003 at the end of the KiKA program shortly before 9 p.m. With a few exceptions, the skits had previously been shown on Chili TV and were mostly repeated every two to three months. Bernd stood on a stage to sing "Tanzt das Brot" until 2006, but the performance was interrupted by short skits. From March 16, 2006, new episodes were shown, in the framework of which quiz programs à la 9Live were parodied. From 2010 the program ran irregularly, most recently on November 13, 2010, and was replaced by the program “Bernd & Friends”.

Night loop

At the same time as the KiKA's broadcasting time was extended, the night loop started on January 1, 2003. It was broadcast analogue via satellite from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. (until April 2003 it was also broadcast digitally ). The first night loop lasted seven minutes and contained excerpts from seven Chili TV episodes, and there was also a treadmill with information on KiKA reception. From the second loop, the length was extended to 20 minutes and complete Bernd stories were shown. The fourth night loop contained the story Bernd in Hell , which was specially produced for the night loop (which, however, was presented in a shortened version on Chili-TV a few days earlier ), in which Bernd is trapped in the television picture due to a technical defect. Since he cannot escape this ordeal at first, he constantly urges the audience to turn off the television and go to sleep.

The recurring motif of the night loop episodes is that Bernd sits alone in an empty white room, is pushed around by a robot arm and a computer voice prompts him to do all kinds of activities that attract the public, which Bernd does not want, which he also shows openly.

From June 29, 2004 to September 30, 2005, an extra long farewell loop of 55 minutes was shown, in which it was announced that Bernd the bread will "soon" no longer be seen at night. It consisted of excerpts from Chili TV and was shown in a shortened version as best of. The reason for the announcement was the intention of the game broadcaster Mastergaming TV to show its program here from July 2004. (KiKA only rented the slot for the time from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.) When the station did not start, the announcement was initially continued to be shown. Since October 1, 2005, the broadcast slot has been taken over by “Primetime” in the evenings and at night, and shortly thereafter by Kanal Telemedial , but only on the analog transponder . Up until March 20, 2008, the notice that the broadcast would start at 6 a.m. was displayed on the digital broadcasting slot.

From March 21, 2008 to October 2008, a night loop (“KiKA Lounge”) was once again broadcast digitally, which deals critically and humorously with the lounge scene. From November 2008 to February 9, 2009, Bernd das Brot had to go through various casting shows in the night loop. Until May 31, 2009, Bernd das Brot was the moderator of the KiKA Call-In- Night hotline in various sales and quiz shows. In this night loop there was also an allusion to great things. Finally, all three night loops produced were repeated every month. On February 22nd, 2013 another night loop went on air, but with just under 8 minutes the shortest night loop: Bernd on the World Wide Web. Above all, were Facebook , with its games, webcam chatting , the automatic speech recognition software of the iPhone's "Siri" (here called "Lisi") and the film Tron parodies. Since July 19, 2013, a new night loop has been broadcast, in which "a short story of Germany" is told. Very parodic and, as usual from Bernd, provided with appropriate comments. At the beginning of the night loop, Bernd gives a short speech to the viewer, who is still sitting in front of the television at this time, and explains to him what too much television can do and what the actual task of television is / was. Then an informative story broadcast is announced by a computer voice , but the computer explodes beforehand and the voice changes into a “shrill infotainment voice”.

Bernd non-stop

Starting in 2008, a program called “Bernd nonstop” was shown at 6 a.m. every day. Bernd nonstop showed future night loops before they were broadcast regularly. No new episodes have been produced since 2009.

Specials / Berndivents

In addition to the regular broadcasts, several specials were created. The first special was KiKA XL , which was shown on January 1, 2003 , a 25-minute program to extend the broadcasting time of KiKA with several prominent guest stars. At the end of 2003, the New Year's Eve Special Dinner for Bread was created , in which Dinner for One is re-enacted - with Bernd as the butler, Briegel as Miss Sophie and the studio cat Morle as Tigerskin. Like the original, this special has been repeated every year since then. In 2005 the Christmas special " Sweeter the Buns Never Sound" and 5 Years of Great Stuff - Gala were created .

In addition, some continued stories were as special chili TV including shown at a time, three of Robin Hood with various guest stars as well as the Harry Potter spoof Berndi broter and the box of disasters as a student at the school of magic in which Bernd block resin is added. In 2006 the series Berndivent ran , in which a 45-minute TV film with Chili, Briegel and Bernd is shown once a month at prime time at 8:15 pm. In addition, from 2001 to 2003, Bernd occasionally appeared on the daily live broadcast Kikania , during which two children's teams compete against each other in various rounds of games. In the game "The Toaster", Bernd has to be found in a virtual labyrinth (the toaster). At the beginning of the game round a short one player is shown in which Bernd asks the candidates to get him out quickly.

In addition to the TV appearances, Chili, Briegel and Bernd can be seen "live" each summer on the KiKA summer tour, which is a guest in several cities. As part of a “Chili TV Show” moderated by Marita Hueber and Robert Schön , Chili, Briegel and Bernd sing a few songs to the full playback. You don't see the well-known dolls here, but people in special costumes. Bernd das Brot also had a role in the episode "Frau Holle - Hell is going on in heaven" of the ProSieben fairy tale hour . He also has a guest role in the series Pastewka . In the episode "Das Brot" he appears in Pastewka's hallucinations.

Bernd the bread

The series named after its main character, Bernd das Brot , started on October 6, 2007 with 20 ten-minute stories, most of which were shown as double episodes. 20 more stories followed in 2008, and an additional twelve episodes were broadcast from September 2009. In this series, Chili, Briegel and Bernd moved into a common house, where they usually have trouble with their neighbors. The theme song for this series was sung by Dirk Bach .

Bernd & Friends

The series Bernd & Friends - Bernd das Brot with the best jokes of all time has been broadcast since 2008 . In the five-minute episodes Bernd plays amusing skits with the celebrities Christoph Maria Herbst , Bernhard Hoëcker , Bastian Pastewka , Barbara Schöneberger , Ben , Oliver Beerhenke , Guido Hammesfahr , Carolin Kebekus and Michael Kessler . A robotic arm transports Bernd and his celebrity guests into ever new situations and presents them with ever new challenges.

Bernd Channel

A new series called Bernd Channel followed in June 2015 . There were initially three pilot episodes broadcast. There was also a hands-on campaign in which you had to persuade Bernd das Brot to take a photo or video about this day. The series is about Bernd entering the world of the internet and having to deal with YouTube comments and computer games. On December 31, 2016, KiKA broadcast three more episodes with the subtitle Singt das Brot! which revolve around the topic of music. In every Singt das Brot episode, well-known musicians have a guest appearance and sing one of his songs together with Bernd. With Kai Lüftner he sings in episode 5 Wie ein Brot , with the folk rock band Schandmaul in episode 6 I say no . On New Year's Eve 2017 the seventh episode of Bernd Channel premiered, in which Bernd sings with Marti Fischer and fans connected via livestream, Tanzt das Brot .

Since March 2017, episodes 5 and 6 have also been shown as a night loop.

More figures from the broadcasts

KiKA summer tour with performance by Chili the Sheep, Bernd the Bread and Briegel the Bush
Puppeteer Jan Mixsa with the Briegel-der-Busch doll during an autograph session
  • Chili das Schaf is a hyperactive stunt sheep with red pigtail hairstyle in the service of KiKA. She loves action and is characterized by unshakable courage and zest for action . She moderates the show Tolle Dinge . Chili has been spoken by Tanja Schumann since 2002 and played by Suse Capelle and Lothar Brus. Chili's distinguishing mark is the “Chili Power!” She yells before every stunt.
  • Briegel the Bush became known for his many inventions. Due to his scientific knowledge, he is the technical expert for the show Tolle Dinge . Pink flowers sprout out of his head when he has a lot of fun or unexpected situations with a shock effect. Briegel's “Tääähäää” is just as feared by Bernd the bread as his inventions, which rarely work and often explode. But: "There is no great genius without a dash of madness," said Aristotle . He is voiced by Jan Mixsa .
  • Mr. Siebert is the lighting technician in the Tolle-Dinge-Studio, who from the first season regularly loses his balance due to the vibrations caused by Chili's stunts. Can only be seen briefly and heard with a loud “Ahhhhhhhh!”, It falls down in the background with its headlight . The only thing Briegel and Chili have to reply is: "Sorry, Mr. Siebert". He sees it calmly and simply replies: "Yes ..., ouch ...". Mr Siebert, falling down and hitting the ground hard, is of course just a doll with blue dungarees , a blue cap and a headlight.
  • Prince Fröhlich is a prince charming with an overbite who always walks around with a shoe in hand and asks various people whether they are “monkey dolls” ( Cinderella ). This is why this character is sometimes referred to as the “monkey doll” in some scripts for the series. He appeared as a running gag in many of the fairy tale skits on Chili TV , but occasionally has short guest appearances in other episodes. Prince Fröhlich is played by Norman Cöster .
  • Ms. Ulf is a Viking who works as Briegel's housekeeper. It first appeared in August 2003 in the Chili TV episode “Spieleabend”. Mrs. Ulf is played by Norman Cöster.
  • The gorilla is a disgruntled guy who unexpectedly shows up pretty much everywhere and beats up the people (and bread) present. Whether as a “monkey in the closet”, at Bernd dem Bread's New Year's speech (the gorilla also set the studio on fire ...), as a pizza delivery man or a chilli pet, the gorilla appears and roars around. Just like Prince Fröhlich , The Gorilla is considered a little running gag in the newer Chili TV episodes.
  • Omnidoom 999 is Briegel's household robot that regularly gets out of control and causes great damage, while constantly giving the warning “System error. Must enslave humanity. Resistance is futile. ”Says. Briegel always defends him with “Tähää! The Omnidoom just wants to play! ”He has the collective knowledge of the Bielefeld city library, which he destroyed when the librarian asked him to be quiet. It was finally converted by Briegel in the episode “Rockt das Brot” into the camera robot “ Ballhaus 2000 ” for a casting show , which, however, also did not work properly and drove over the casting participants instead of around them.
The construction appeared for the first time as a bread protection suit in the "Tolle Dinge" episode "Bernd Robots" and was later converted into the household robot Omnidoom 999, which appeared in several episodes. During the filming of "Rockt das Brot" the construction was destroyed and replaced by a different looking, smaller robot in later episodes.
  • The fighting bulls are another (literally to be taken) running gag. When mentioned or suddenly they run through the picture and run around characters (mostly Bernd). They first appeared in the episode "Parlez Vous" on Tolle Dinge .

Development of the main characters

  • At the beginning of the series, Bernd is determined to escape the gag contract that binds him to the studio and despises his two colleagues with all his heart. More recent episodes show a certain resignation and that his two friends are personally important to him.
  • Chili is introduced as a highly early adolescent stunt sheep that is up for any illegal fun. More recent episodes reveal a more maternal trait.
  • Briegel, initially just a shy hobbyist with a secret pen pal named Luna, is currently shown as a megalomaniac leader with a preference for clothes and lingerie.

  • Adolf Grimme Prize : In 2004 Bernd das Brot received the Adolf Grimme Prize in the “Special” category because, in the opinion of the jury, he represents “the right to be in a bad mood”. He opposes "on behalf of us the good-mood terror that is constantly booming and booming from the television" and named "the dumbing mechanisms [...] of part of the TV business". The award was accepted by Tommy Krappweis on behalf of the award ceremony because Bernd was not interested in the award.

kidnapping

The two-meter-high plastic figure of "Bernd das Brot", which has been promoting the KiKA right next to Erfurt City Hall since autumn 2007 , was stolen on January 21, 2009. Unknown sympathizers of the occupation of the Topf and Sons site in Erfurt confessed to the "kidnapping" , who wanted to protest against the planned evacuation of the occupied factory building on the industrial wasteland of the Erfurt company Topf & Sons . On February 1, 2009, Bernd the bread appeared again. He was found again in an abandoned barracks area in Nohra between Erfurt and Weimar.

computer game

In 2001 Ubisoft released the game Kikania, in which Chilli, Bernd and Brigel had their first video game appearance.

In March 2013, Chimera Entertainment from Munich announced that it would be working on the computer game about Bernd das Bread and the Impossible, which was funded by the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern . The producer is bumm game GmbH, a subsidiary of bumm film GmbH, which developed the characters and the TV series. It was released on September 12, 2014 in a tin lunch box containing the game disc and an additional disc with extras (for Windows ).
