The Telemedial channel was an Austrian television broadcaster that called itself the “first spiritual broadcaster in Europe”. Thomas Hornauer was the managing director and sole shareholder .

history

Kanal Telemedial first went on air on June 29, 2006 under the name Primetime . On December 5, 2007, the station changed its concept and name to Kanal Telemedial . This was also the start of “Telemediale Zeit”, the time that has passed since the transmitter was redesigned and that was continuously displayed on several monitors in the studio's background.

At the end of 2006 the program of the station, which is based in Vienna , started. However, the majority of the program was produced in the former B.TV studios in Ludwigsburg . Since February 8, 2008, broadcasts have also been made from the former horse stable of Palais Schwarzenberg in Vienna, which at the time was being converted into a television studio.

The broadcaster broadcast a 24-hour program on Astra Digital. In some cable networks and via analog satellite, the channel was broadcast daily from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the children's channel. Furthermore, the program was also broadcast via a live stream on the official website 24 hours a day. Repetitions were also often sent. Kanal Telemedial broadcast on July 1st, 2008 for the last time. The Primetime media service, which is also owned by Thomas Hornauer, then broadcast on the same frequency.

The Austrian Communications Authority presented the extinction of June 5, 2008 broadcast license established by Telemedial. The channel was not able to demonstrate regular broadcasting operations from Austria and was therefore not operating legally in accordance with the approval. Through further research, the authority found out that Telemedial currently only consists of volunteers. The staff responsible for broadcasting are missing. Hornauer's appeal against the loss of the license was rejected by the Austrian Federal Communications Senate. The Senate thus confirmed the expiry of the license as determined by the communications authority.

The Primetime media service ceased broadcasting on the evening of July 31, 2008. After a brief interruption, Hornauer reported back with "Kanal Telemedial". Hornauer said that after discussions with his lawyer, he had objected to the withdrawal of the broadcasting license. However, this was rejected on June 27, 2008 as unfounded. Broadcasts will only be shown via the live stream on the Kanal Telemedial website. Since June 2, 2009, Kanal Telemedial has been running again as a live stream and broadcasting live programs at irregular intervals. Otherwise an emergency program consisting of repetitions is to be received.

program

At first, as with its predecessor channels, Kanal Telemedial's program consisted of telephone advice. Among the advisors, who could also be reached outside of the program via several value-added numbers from Telekontor , were cartelists , “ star viewers” and also some seers who use methods such as a swinging prism or roots to get the information requested by the caller read specifications, worked. The viewers could be put through to the studio by phone and the respective consultants now claimed to predict events in their future. In most cases, topics were chosen by the caller, such as health, love or finance. In some cases, game elements were built into the advice programs, such as quick rounds in which the caller was only given advice for a limited number of minutes.

From the end of 2007, the advisory programs no longer formed the main part of the program content. In the evening, the station showed a different format and increasingly relied on teleshopping elements. The moderators for the programs gathered irregularly in front of the studio setting and performed demonstrations. For example, presenters danced a dance around a pyramid, which is one of the central elements of a program, or the presenters held hands and slowly walked in a circle around this pyramid in order to “collect energy”. The main speaker was mostly Hornauer. Another element of the programs was the so-called OrangeTable , where topics such as “energy” and “spirituality” were discussed. At times, callers were put through to the studio, and some viewers' emails were processed, and critical emails were sometimes dealt with. The OrangeTable also gave callers to the program the opportunity to speak to the Telemedial moderation team . Most of the calls were made with Thomas Hornauer, with some viewers reading poems, talking to him about the "telemedial idea" or complaining about the program that was shown on this channel. In addition, several amateur bands played in the programs. Artists were also present in the studio and produced pictures live in a broadcast on a special topic such as faith .

The last broadcast by Kanal Telemedial was broadcast until midnight after 210 broadcast days on July 31, 2008. A little later, the program has been on the Internet via live streaming broadcast with repetitions and new broadcasts.

Business model "free pay TV channels"

Since the end of 2007, viewers of the station have been asked to do so-called “energy balancing”. The broadcaster, which referred to itself as a “free pay TV broadcaster” as part of this campaign, asked the callers to compensate for the energy gained by watching by fading in phone numbers that could be called up to Cost 50 €. For people who have to get by on very little money, there was the possibility of supporting the broadcaster at the Telemediale Club for € 5 per month. For consumption one evening you should pay 15 €. One offer was the spontaneous equalization of impulses by phone, which in principle resembled a donation to the sender, the impulse generator should be the feeling of progress through the sender.

At the beginning of 2008 this amount was reduced to ten euros. In addition, account numbers have now also been shown to which the viewer should transfer as much money as the program is worth to him. The broadcaster sets certain requirements, for example, watching a program was estimated at € 4, and watching the entire evening was estimated at € 7. The viewer should decide for himself how much he wanted to transfer to the broadcaster.

The "Telemedial Idea"

Thomas G. Hornauer explained the telemedial idea as a school of life, in which it is not only about understanding and learning on the mental level, but also about intuition . The viewer should be the focus here and bring the topics directly to the fore. Hornauer's OrangeTable should serve as a spiritual level. The tele-media idea is also compared by Thomas G. Hornauer with pregnancy, the "child" Telemedial ever develop in.

reception

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung characterized the station as “a single rip-off company emblazoned with belief in fate” .

Norbert Schneider, head of the state media authority in North Rhine-Westphalia and chairman of the joint agency for program, advertising and media competence of the state media authorities (GSPWM) said “Taking money for energy to be transmitted via the screen eclipses everything that has existed so far Has".

In April 2008 it became known that Kanal Telemedial had been reprimanded by the Austrian television supervisory authority because the program promoted behavior that was harmful to health. Viewers would trust the healing through telemedial and would therefore refrain from visiting the doctor.

Oliver Kalkofe parodied and criticized Kanal Telemedial several times in his show Kalkofes Mattscheibe . The satirical website fernsehkritik.tv also published critical articles on the Telemedial channel. The film The Founder is based in part on the work of Thomas G. Hornauer. He initially took legal action against the film, but finally waived a ban on the film in order not to promote its popularity .
