content

Jeremiah Jones' group kidnaps Albert Burns, an upgrader. They learn from him that the Coherence already knows of their plan to go public with their knowledge and is planning countermeasures. Meanwhile, the coherence is working on the market launch of a chip, the so-called lifehook , which does not take the carrier into the coherence immediately, but rather gradually . This is disguised as a new type of communication and is developing into a best seller.

In addition, the residents of Hide-Out learn that the inclusion of the American president in the Coherence is imminent. Jones devises a plan to prevent this from happening. But Christopher is convinced that this plan will fail. While trying to get the president's phone number, he found out that his friend, the Penta-Byte-Man, is apparently being massively persecuted by Coherence and concludes from this that he must be in possession of information that could damage the coherence.

Since Jones could not be dissuaded from his plan, Christopher decides to go to Europe on his own and visit Penta-Byte-Man there. He persuades Serenity to come with him.

Smuggled to Europe by the Hide-Out network, the two of them get from Paris to Rennes , where Christopher Serenity confesses his love. The two become a couple. Shortly afterwards they meet Penta-Byte-Man , an Italian named Giuseppe "Guy" Forti , for the first time . Together with him they try to find out what information Forti has that obviously scares coherence.

When they find a program code in Fortis recordings that he accidentally recorded once, it happens that all over the world people are suddenly paralyzed and no longer react to their environment. It is immediately clear that this has to be related to the lifehooks , and they conclude that the coherence has probably incapacitated itself. They suspect that a critical number of brains adopted has been exceeded.

Concerned about his mother, who is in London , Christopher tries to get to England with the help of the director Bryson. It turns out that Coherence only turned off some of the upgraders, but Bryson is still active. The coherence arrests Christopher and transfers him to the headquarters in London. There his chips are removed and a plan is to implant a new, functioning chip that will finally make him part of the coherence.

Serenity and Forti follow him to London, but are also taken up by the coherence. Christopher succeeds in catching a weapon that Forti has smuggled with him. He demands the coherence to let both go or he will kill himself. The coherence responds to his request, since Christopher needs it to correct a system error.

The takeover of Christopher fails because the coherence is disturbed by a crowd that Forti has already lured to the building in which the coherence has its headquarters. In the meantime, Christopher has found out how the found code can damage coherence. Christopher overpowers his mother, barricades himself and hackers that finally destroys the coherence in its current form.
