Angel of Death (novel)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Angel of Death is a novel by Andreas Eschbach that was published by Lübbe Verlag in September 2013 . The main topic of the book is the apparently baseless youth violence and the question of the justice of vigilante justice .

action

The pensioner Erich Sassbeck is attacked by two youngsters on the way home in a subway station. When the police arrive, the two youths are lying dead next to their victim. The pensioner claims that a white angel was protecting him. He is caught in the crosshairs of the police, the judiciary and the public. Only the journalist Ingo Praise believes that the pensioner's statement is correct. The suspicion that there is indeed an unearthly creature protecting the defenseless of the city solidifies as more and more murders occur that can be attributed to the unknown. The triggered media hype about the protector of the city gives the journalist his own talk show. He uses this as a platform for heroising the avenger and vigilante justice. This success brings him many supporters, but also opponents, above all the public prosecutor, who repeatedly knows how to hinder his journalistic work. Ingo Praise also has to fear for his life again and again. An anonymous tip is leaked to the police that there is a connection between current events and a previous case of youth violence.

background

In his novel, Eschbach deals with the topic of violence among young people, which is becoming increasingly topical. He strongly criticizes the way the media and the judiciary deal with the perpetrators and victims of acts of violence and shows the reader the two sides of vigilante justice. The case 15 years ago, which helped to solve the murder, has strong parallels with the case of Dominik Brunner, who was killed in 2009 .
