Martin May
Martin May (born April 21, 1961 in Coburg ) is a German actor , screenwriter , radio play and voice actor .
youth
May was born as the first child of the housewife Inge May and the primary school principal Heinz May. The family initially lived in Weidhausen , where he also attended elementary school. During his school days at the Albertinum grammar school in Coburg, the family moved to Ahorn . In 1980 he graduated from high school with a high school diploma.
At the age of 15 May had his first appearances as an extra at the Landestheater Coburg . For the film adaptation of the book "The Wonderful Years" by GDR author Reiner Kunze , which was carried out in Coburg , May was selected from 800 applicants by the originally planned director Rudolf Noelte for his first role, that of Stephan.
career
After The Wonderful Years May played the "Fähnrich Ullmann" in Das Boot in 1981 and began studying German and theater studies at the University of Munich while filming , which he finished after a few years without a degree. He was also a guest auditor at the Munich Film School.
His first television roles followed in 1981, he worked with directors such as Tankred Dorst , Peter Weck and Michael Verhoeven . May 1982 played at the theater in the Free Volksbühne Berlin . In 1984 May played his first leading TV role in the film Der Sohn des Bullen , directed by Heinz Schirk . In 1988 May received the German Actor Award for his performance in Erwin Keusch's film Der Flieger .
He created another mainstay as a voice actor. His field of activity as a speaker was not limited to films and series; Advertising, radio plays (for example, ghost hunter John Sinclair , where he plays the role of Sinclair's friend and colleague Suko) and audio books followed. May dubbed, among other things, the series The Springfield Story , Brothers - Between Brothers and spoke the lead role in the film Joint Security Area . In the film Dear Mama (1990) he worked as a writer, director, producer and leading actor. From 1986 to 2001 May, during which time he also appeared in various other roles, was employed a total of ten times as assistant to Robert Wegener in the television series Tatort ( Hessischer Rundfunk ). In the years 1989/1990 he played the role of the motorcycle freak Charly Strecker in twelve episodes of the television series With Body and Soul at the side of Günter Strack . From 2011 to the end of 2014 May was a board member of the Federal Association of Film and Television Actors (BFFS). He is also a member of the German Film Academy and the German Academy for Television .
family
During the filming of The Bull's Son , May met Kathinka, the daughter of the director Heinz Schirk. The two married in 1986. This marriage, which was divorced in 2005, resulted in two daughters and a son. May married the author, journalist and musician Marianne Wellershoff in 2008 . The couple has two daughters and lives in Hamburg.
