The series shows and exaggerates everyday office life in the Lurzer KG company, which manufactures trimming devices. The focus is on the relationship between people, but business transactions are also part of the episodes.

The attempts of the management to motivate the employees often go wrong, so that it often goes haywire. The usual everyday problems in a completely normal office are also inevitable; these are reflected, for example, in small intrigues, gossip, envy and even office loves. Rationalization measures are also the order of the day. A Japanese specialist goes about this so thoroughly that the Lurzer KG company has to be closed for the time being. The closure will not last long, however, because there is already an American participation, the company is reopened under the name "LHS - Lurzer, Harryman & Sell" and moves from a somewhat old-fashioned, ailing building into an office building that was modern at the time .

At the beginning of the second season, however, it turns out that the Americans Harryman & Sell have withdrawn, which meant the end of the LHS company. Therefore, the company will reopen in the second season under its original name "Lurzer KG" in a much smaller building, which, however, has to be demolished by order of the authorities due to toxic building materials, which means a move to a new building takes place again. In the third season the Lurzer company is once again in a different building, but no reason is given for moving again.

Business owner Lurzer is almost never seen. He is usually not available on a business trip or for other reasons.

Dr. Herbert Brockstedt , always dressed in a suit and bow tie, slightly hectic and absent-minded, is at the beginning of the series head of personnel, commercial director and authorized signatory of the company and thus the main contact and superior who has a decisive influence on the company. On the one hand, he is very correct, conscientious and strives for the well-being of the company, but on the other hand he also understands how to instrumentalize the employees for his goals and in some situations shows himself not very grateful for the help provided. After the company Lurzer KG was closed and incorporated into the holding company Lurzer, Harryman & Sell, he had to push through very rigorous rationalization plans against his own convictions, for example by dismissing the entire construction department.

At the beginning of the series, he attaches great importance to being approached with his doctorate. When the Americans started doing business, however, he announced in a circular that all employees would in future have to address each other by first name and “you”. As soon as he says “Dr. Brockstedt "is addressed, he corrects people by saying" Herbert ". After Gosslar became a silent partner in the company, he was gradually ousted. He is initially denied the position of commercial director, which means that he is only head of personnel. In the further course of the series he is isolated more and more by Gosslar's help. Gabi Neuhammer works as a typist in the company's central office. She is a bit naive in business matters, sometimes seems a bit flippant and disrespectful when dealing with superiors, but she is very loyal to the company and helps to solve a case of factory espionage in which the company's sales manager and later silent partner, Alf Gosslar, is involved with enlightening. In the male world, she is very popular, but only a few men get close to her. After an evening together, however, she ends up in bed with her colleague Mr. Semmler. Renate Gerlach is a calm, reserved, very controlled young woman and Gabi Neuhammer's best friend. As it turns out later in the series, she is an illegitimate daughter of Dr. Brokstedt, what must be kept secret in the company. Gabi Neuhammer is the only colleague who knows about it. While Dr. Brockstedt calls them "You" in the company, and as soon as they are alone, he affectionately calls them "Renatchen".

Lotte Hanisch is the office manager of the central writing room at the beginning of the series. Although she can be very strict, as a works councilor, she is open to the problems of her colleagues. At the beginning of the series, it turns out that she broke up with her husband. During a company outing, she falls in love with Mr. Kalinke, who says he is “unhappily married”. The relationship is marked by some breakups and reconciliations, but both live together over the course of the second season. In the penultimate episode of the series, she falls in love with a volunteer who comes to the company for a short time and tells Mr. Kalinke that she wants to part with him. As it turns out, said volunteer is having affairs with three colleagues at the same time. Whether the separation will endure or whether there will be reconciliation again is no longer discussed in the last episode.

Edmund Kalinke is a calm person who has the habit of solving interpersonal problems of colleagues very calmly and at the same time impulsively. Only when he temporarily took over from Dr. Brokstedt is supposed to take over when he is in Boston, and the company is not working properly because of the move, he is very nervous and irascible.

At the beginning of the series he was head of accounting, then sales manager for the southern district and later even sales manager for the entire company. In the second season he again heads a sales district. During a company outing, he falls in love with Ms. Schneider and has a relationship with her. The relationship is marked by some breakups and reconciliations, but both live together over the course of the second season. In the penultimate episode of the series, Ms. Schneider breaks up with him on the grounds that she has fallen in love with another man. Whether there will be another reconciliation between the two is not discussed in the last episode either.

Alwin Thieme is a pedantic employee who always attaches great importance to pleasing his superiors. At the beginning of the series he worked in sales together with Gerd Semmler, later he was sales manager for the districts south-south-west, south-west and south as well as the company's security officer. Annette Münzner is a typist who is employed by the personnel service and works in the company as a representative for Ms. Klose, who suffers from depression. On her first day at work, she rebelled against the authorities in the company. So she simply parks her car in Dr. Brokstedt and sits down opposite her superiors such as B. Ms. Hanisch verbally rigidly defend herself if she feels restricted in her freedom. In this way she shows that she has nothing to lose because she doesn't work in the company. Felix Schmitt is a trainee at the company and works together with Ms. Koch and Mr. Kalinke in accounting. He likes to comment on various situations with the phrase “But clean!”, A running gag that is taken over by later trainees. When the accounting is switched to IT, the entire department is in the process of destroying old paper documents after they have been entered into the computer. Its job is to label the 5¼-inch floppy disks that were common at the time. Suddenly, the department employees discover that the disks contain no data. Katharina Wespe is a headstrong and initially very unpopular colleague from accounting and later IT, who constantly gets into arguments with others about everything and has the habit of bothering her superiors with all sorts of trivialities. In the second season she works as office manager of the registry and is elected by the workforce as works councilor. She believes that the cards she lays can predict the future for her, but most of the time she is wrong about her predictions.

In addition, it turns out in the course of the series that she has to struggle with considerable private problems. So her husband is long-term unemployed. In the second season she finally separates and lives alone.

Adam Lehmann is the brother of Ms. Hanisch and is employed as an accountant in the company with the task of preparing and implementing the conversion of the accounting to EDP. In the further course of the series, he becomes the system officer for the entire company and also performs this role in the second season as head of the IT department. He appears very self-confident and occasionally arrogant, believes in astrology and in this respect represents a counterpart to Ms. Wespe. If he is instructed to appear somewhere immediately, he always refuses to obey this, on the grounds that he is on terms which, in his opinion, come from German military jargon, not to react. He is also an avid hobby gardener and hobby cook and has a relationship with Ms. Koch in the first season. During the second season he falls in love with the head of the writing room, Birgit Broegele. This relationship is marked by several separations and reconciliations. Gerd Semmler is the laid-back, somewhat loudmouthed colleague who works in sales. He often appears late at work and has many affairs with women, including Gabi Neuhammer. After Lurzer KG was closed, he took up a new position in Hamburg and did not appear in the series anymore.

Roswitha Koch is an occasionally somewhat hysterical employee who works in accounting. After Ms. Hanisch became Mr. Lurzer's secretary, she switched to the writing room and became the office manager. At the beginning she always clashes with her two colleagues Gabi and Renate when they compare her to Ms. Hanisch, but later she changes to a very friendly superior who often has her back to her colleagues in the writing room. During the course of the series she has a relationship with Mr. Lehmann.

Willi Schweiger is a somewhat strange-looking employee who is hired in the middle of the first season and works in sales together with Gottfried Watzmann. He has a habit of telling a joke in tricky situations or when criticized. He is also a passionate pipe smoker, which means that the sprinkler system in the warehouse is switched on when he and Mr. Thieme inspect the fire alarms.

At the beginning of the series, Peter Leclair is sales manager at Lurzer. Alf Gosslar is sales manager at the beginning of the series and thus the successor to Mr. Leclair. At first he did a very good job and landed a lot of orders. In the course of the series, however, he increasingly begins against Dr. To intrigue Brokstedt so that he trusts him less and less. These intrigues culminate in the fact that he engages in factory espionage and forwards offers calculated by the company Lurzer, Harryman & Sell to Mannheimer Sport- und Trimmgeräte GmbH so that they can undercut the orders in terms of price and win the bid, which means that many orders are missing and the economic situation is tense. After these machinations were also uncovered with the help of Gabi and Brokstedt's personal assistant Markus, Gosslar resigned without notice. What is strange is that Dr. Brokstedt received instructions from America in this connection not to take any further measures apart from the termination.

After Alf Gosslar disappeared for a while, a representative from Boston announced himself after a certain time, who later turned out to be Alf Gosslar. He comes back to the company because, in addition to his partners Harryman & Sell, he is also a silent partner in the holding company to which the Lurzer company belongs. In addition, Gosslar gives Dr. Brokstedt admits that he deliberately harmed the Lurzer company, since a holding company should not only have subsidiaries that make profits. It is much more likely that there should also be subsidiaries that make a loss for tax reasons. After Dr. Brokstedt retires on vacation for a certain period of time, Gosslar takes over the company and is very calm, but rigorous, with his rationalization plans. The entire company is converted to IT and a modern electronic time recording system is installed, which the employees initially boycott. Later on, Gosslar was promoted from Lurzer to the European headquarters in Frankfurt, where he continued to intervene in the company's fortunes against the will and knowledge of his successor Jan Terjahn.

After the end of the LHS company, he reappears in the second season as a manager for Sportgeräte Padberg, with whom Lurzer KG is supposed to share an order. However, it quickly turns out that Gosslar is obviously not up to anything good, because by chance information reaches the Lurzer company that the company Sportgeräte Padberg is insolvent, so that the previously planned major order finally comes to nothing.

Markus Horlacher is an assistant to the management appointed by the Americans at the beginning of the series and in this position initially Dr. Brokstedt put aside. He is extremely competent in questions of management. He often clashes with his manager because he makes decisions without consulting him. Together with Gabi Neuhammer, he uncovered a case of factory espionage in which Gosslar was involved. Later in the series, in which Alf Gosslar returns to the company as a silent partner and Dr. Brokstedt is gradually removed from power, he becomes Gosslar's assistant and goes with him to the European headquarters in Frankfurt.

At the end of the first season (1.39 all in white ), Mr. Lurzer announces via video message that Markus Horlacher will in future be the new commercial director and head of human resources and that Dr. Brokstedt and Terjahn replaced in their functions.

Jan Terjahn : The passionate tea drinker is the successor to the former commercial director Alf Gosslar, who has moved to the European headquarters in Frankfurt. His striking trademark is that he always wears a white suit. It is both a counterpart to Dr. Brokstedt, with whom he gets along well after a short saber rattle on both sides, as well as a counterpart to Gosslar. Although he appears very defensive at first, at some point he can no longer resist the manipulation attempts that Gosslar undertakes from Frankfurt. When it turns out in the last episode of the first season (1.39 All in white ) that the company is not only in the office building, but also in the private house of Dr. Brokstedt secretly had surveillance cameras installed, he quit his job at Dr. Brokstedt. Dr. At the beginning of the second season, Adalbert-Wilhelm Schmitt-Lausitz is the new head of HR at Lurzer. Marianne Rothenbaum is a somewhat cool, very attractive career woman who joins the Lurzer company in the second season. At the beginning she is the commercial director. Since, however, due to her good relationship with Mr. Lurzer, she occasionally exceeds her competencies and goes against Dr. Schmitt-Lausitz intrigues, he releases her from this position and appoints her as special representative of Mr. Lurzer. After Dr. Schmitt-Lausitz has left the company, she occupies the position of sales manager. She has a relationship with Sebastian von Niederbach.

From the second season onwards, Birgit Broegele is the office manager of the writing room , which has been completely re-staffed from then on. In contrast to her predecessors Ms. Hanisch and Ms. Koch, who could occasionally be very scratchy, she is always calm and friendly by her nature. In addition, she suffers from stomach problems and points them out again and again in stressful situations. If colleagues from other departments want preferential treatment in the writing room, she always politely but firmly points out that there is no preferential treatment. Ingrid Schmelzer works in the writing room at the beginning of the second season. She's a little curious at times. In the third season she stays in the writing room due to the lack of space, but becomes the personal assistant to the controller Dr. Scheibing was appointed after her two colleagues refused.

Sebastian von Niederbach is head of a sales district and works with Mr. Kalinke in an office. Similar to Gerd Semmler from the first season he is a rather relaxed, sometimes arrogant type who occasionally comes later and leaves earlier or takes a nap during working hours. Director Albrecht Brömmelkamm is a tall, stout man and the definitive successor to Dr. Brokstedt. In contrast to its predecessor, it appears calm in itself, but is no less impulsive. He runs the company with a very firm hand and spends one night or another in the office if need be. Occasionally he uses the "I-went oracle", which consists of round, coin-like discs and an accompanying manual, to interpret different situations. He likes to quote simple rules such as B. "Transparency and consistency" and is only moderately popular with some colleagues. In his absence he is often referred to as the “old stinky boot” or “the old one”, although he is very good-natured despite his strict leadership.

In the last episode of the series, he is also appointed to the supervisory board of the entire Lurzer Group due to the services he has provided for the company.

His running gag : In the third season there is a large portrait photo of his predecessor Dr. Brokstedt on the wall across from the desk. Whenever a situation becomes stressful or seems hopeless, he looks at the picture and says: “This is no longer our world.” He also always has exactly ten chocolates in his desk drawer, of which he eats exactly one.

Fritz Rohr is usually a very quiet and somewhat sad-looking man, always correctly dressed, who will be reinstated in the Lurzer company after a long period of unemployment during the second season. His greatest fear is to become unemployed again, as he is particularly concerned about his financial existence. Therefore, he never takes part in any protests against the management, because he does not want to lose his job under any circumstances. In the third season, his colleague Wolfgang Förster has an affair with his daughter Susi, about which he is very angry and which he tries unsuccessfully to prevent. After he has finally come to terms with it and seriously tries to bury the hatchet with Förster, the relationship between the two falls apart and Susi, who has even broken off contact with her father for a while, moves back home .

Wolfgang Förster initially works as an employee together with Ms. Wespe in the company's registry. However, he does not feel challenged there because he has a university degree and a master’s degree and therefore feels called to higher things. Later he was assigned a district as a salesman and even became a personal assistant to Dr. Scheibing, but a short time later he comes back to sales. In the third season he is hired by Mr. Rohr as a tutor for his daughter Susi and teaches her in Latin. They both fall in love, which Mr. Rohr tries to prevent. Although he and Susi pursue various interpersonal activities in addition to tutoring, he can help her pass the Abitur with an average of 2.7. However, the relationship breaks up after a certain time, as Susi does not want to take on household chores such as cooking and cleaning. So she moves back to her parents.

In the second season, Vera Krafft comes into contact with employees of Lurzer KG due to a bicycle accident. Later it turns out that she is a computer specialist and is looking for work. Mr. Lehmann, who is looking for an assistant, is so enthusiastic about your references that he campaigns for a position. Although her director Brömmelkamm offers a permanent position, she only wants a fixed-term contract of six months because the salary she receives is too low and she has no interest in any long-term commitment anyway. She is very bold in her manner and rarely minuses her mouth. For a short time she has an affair with Dr. Scheibing, however, ends it after a short time, as she dislikes the way he treats his colleagues.

Johannes Neustein joins the company as salesman and successor to Mr. von Niederbach. At first, it looks like he doesn't do anything but make private phone calls all day, which results in bad sales and due to be fired after his probationary period. As it turned out, however, the conversations were not private at all. Rather, he has landed a multi-million dollar contract for the German Fitness Association for the Lurzer company, which has given him great recognition and a commission of 78,000  marks (based on current purchasing power € 58,417). The joy about it is suddenly interrupted, however, as the production department reports that the company lacks the capacity to deliver on time, which leads to a contractual penalty of four million marks (based on current purchasing power € 2,995,756) and thus Lurzer's insolvency Consequence. When Johannes Neustein found out about this, however, he informed Director Brömmelkamm that, in his opinion, these guidelines were completely out of date and that he had therefore used other forms anyway, which did not provide for the strict delivery times or contractual penalties, so that the company actually carried out this large order without problems can perform.

Dr. Heinrich Scheibing is the controller appointed by Mr. Lurzer. In the beginning he only had an advisory role, but he knows how to weave his threads in such a way that he gains more and more influence and intrigues against both Director Brömmelkamm and the sales manager Ms. Rothenbaum, although he gets along quite well with her at the beginning. Finally, he drives his power games so far that Ms. Rothenbaum throws in the towel and resigns, but at the urgent request of Director Brömmelkamm refrains from doing so. The cars in the series carry the license plate "NB", which at the time stood for the fictional locations Namberg and Niederbach. In reality, this label has stood for Neubrandenburg since 1991 . The series was shot in the Munich area.

The large building of the company Lurzer, Harryman & Sell is actually the building of the FWU - Institute for Film and Image in Science and Education and is located in Grünwald .

In 1983 a novel for the series was published with the title Büro, Büro or the studies of trainee Sigbert Schmidt on the L factor in Konrad Lurzer KG by Wolfgang Körner . The book can be seen briefly in the series itself - in episode 31 (sabotage) of the first season from minute 16.
