The German Academy for Television eV (DAfF) was founded in December 2010 by television professionals from various areas of television production. It is based in Munich and has an office in Cologne .

Origin, purpose and activities

According to the statutes, their purpose is

  • to promote the development of German television as an integral part of German culture and the German cultural industry and to maintain their diversity
  • to stimulate, strengthen and cultivate the conversation and the exchange of ideas and experiences between the German television professionals, especially between freelance and permanent employees
  • to lead the discourse on the content and economic aspects of German television.

The chairman is the actor Michael Brandner . His four deputies are the screenwriter Jochen Greve , the casting director Cornelia von Braun , the production designer Frank Godt , and the producer Stephan Ottenbruch from the television entertainment division. The office of the treasurer will be taken over by the producer Frank Döhmann . The producer Gerhard Schmidt is the president of the academy.

Some of the planned 23 sections (including directing, screenplay, music, documentary film, drama, visual design, sound design) were set up. The number of members is 800.

Every two months there is a nationwide jour fixe in the cities of Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg and Munich.

According to Vice-Chairman Jochen Greve, one of the founding intentions was that "television should not be left to the broadcasters alone". The intention is rather: “We want to be a voice of creative people. We want to give people dignity. "

In May 2018, the association took part in the establishment of the Themis trust agency against sexual harassment and violence .

Awarding

Since 2013, the association has presented an annual award for achievements in all TV production trades. Each section of the academy can nominate a prize in its field. The Acting Section can nominate prizes in four categories: Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role. The winners are then chosen by all members of the Academy.
