Stefan Will (born August 27, 1959 in Fulda ) is a German film composer and pianist .

Life

Stefan Will grew up in Fulda and began playing the piano in his early youth. He took lessons from the jazz pianist and composer Bardo Henning . From 1980 he studied musicology at the University of Hamburg .

Between 1986 and 1990 he was a member of the band Grace Kairos . In 1991 he joined the formation of the singer Maxim Rad , with whom he recorded three albums while working with producers Allen Toussaint and Clive Langer . Between 2008 and 2019 he was involved in the albums of Niels Frevert as a musician

Since 1994 Stefan Will has been working primarily as a composer for film and television productions. Above all, the collaboration with the Berlin director Christian Petzold , whom he assisted as a composer in almost all of his films, such as the drama Die Innere Sicherheit , Phoenix or Transit , which won the German film award , was particularly influential . Among the films of other directors, for which he has composed include The weekend of Nina Grosse , war of Rick Ostermann and homicide Berlin 1 of Marvin Kren , whose music he met the German Television Award was considered. In Marvin Kren's direction, Stefan Will has also provided TV series with music, including the gangster epic 4 Blocks , for which he received the German Academy for Television's award for the best music, and most recently the historical series Freud .

Apart from film work, Stefan Will is involved in various exhibition projects. As a composer and musician, he designs immersive installations for international exhibitions such as the Arab Pavilion at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai , the Swiss Pavilion at the Expo 2012 in Yeosu and the Mobility Pavilion at the Expo 2020 in Dubai .

Stefan Will is a member of the German Film Academy and the European Film Academy . He lives and works in Hamburg .
