Mordkommission Berlin 1 is a 2015 TV film directed by Marvin Kren . The crime thriller starring Friedrich Mücke and Tobias Moretti is set in Berlin in the 1920s and is about the fight of a detective against an underworld boss. The film is loosely based on the story of the Berlin police officer Ernst Gennat .

action

Paul Lang is the head of the Berlin Homicide Commission 1. He lost his wife and daughter in a murder attempt in which he was seriously injured himself. Since then he has been traumatized and addicted to morphine. Behind the attack was Immanuel Tauss, boss of the crocodiles , a Berlin crime syndicate and ring club . Tauss is now in prison in Moabit , but not because of the murder, which has never been solved, but because of tax evasion, prostitution and drug trafficking. Victor Parkov has been running the crocodiles since his conviction . Parkov had betrayed Tauss to the police, he is also in a relationship with Irma Berger, head of the Variété Maze .

Prosecutor Barnekow, a good friend of Lang, is mangled and found dead in the crocodile enclosure of the Berlin zoo. The evening before, Lang had an argument with Barnekow during a visit to the maze , which concerned the laxity of Barnekow's dealings with the ring clubs in Lang's eyes.

Lang immediately suspects Tauss of planning the murder while in prison. But then a dancer from the variety, who overheard the argument between the inspector and the public prosecutor, calls in, and Lang himself comes under suspicion. He asks Irma Berger, whom he gets closer personally in the further course and with whom he spends a night. He also visits Tauss in prison to confront him with the allegations and to extract information about his liaison from him, but in vain. He contacts Parkov and gets him to help the police.

Conrad Ruppert, Lang's employee, is not convinced of Tauss' guilt and is increasingly unsure whether his boss is chasing a pipe dream. But finally, with Parkov's help, Lang is able to identify the liaison, a prison guard. He identifies Masha Kampe, Lang's assistant, as an accomplice and client. As Lang quickly finds out, she is the daughter of Tauss.

In the meantime the witness has been murdered by an unknown person. Once again, Lang comes under suspicion. Masha also places a broken syringe in Lang's apartment, an indication that Lang is the murderer of Barnekow, because a syringe needle was found in his body. Lang is arrested and sent to prison.

As a result, Tauss has sidelined an adversary and breaks out of prison with the help of a finger knife that was previously smuggled into his cell. With Masha's help, he kidnaps Irma Berger and uses her as leverage to take the crocodiles' headquarters , where Parkov and his team are staying. He manages to gather some of his former companions back around him and escapes through the sewer system. Parkov goes in pursuit but is seriously injured by a bomb.

In the meantime, however, Lang has managed to convince Ruppert of his innocence. Together they reach the headquarters of the crocodiles and manage to free Irma Berger from the violence of Masha Kampe. Masha, with whom Ruppert fell in love, is shot by Lang. The two can provide Tauss, who is killed by Lang in a duel.

In the end, Lang, Ruppert and Parkov, who is badly disfigured in the face, are back in the maze like at the beginning , where Irma Berger sings.

Reviews

The reviews were largely positive. Elmar Krekeler speaks in the world of “world class level” and attests Friedrich Mücke “a considerable Tom-Cruise-like (which in this case should be an extreme distinction)”, Oliver Masucci “Mads Mikkelsensche smugness and corporeality” and Tobias Moretti a “mefistophelian” portrayal . Susanne Wittlich writes in Focus that Marvin Kren succeeded in creating “an exciting gangster drama that uses motifs and images from Hollywood classics”, and compares the showdown in the sewer with The Third Man . Michael Hanfeld speaks in the FAZ of “tableaus that make you think of Max Beckmann and figures that seem to have emerged from Alfred Döblin's Berlin Alexanderplatz ”, and attested the film “a gripping story, convincing characters, a strong cast, rich images”.

In contrast, Daland Segler, in his review for the Frankfurter Rundschau , says that the film suffers “from weaknesses in the script”, “follows the genre usages quite conventionally”, and “there are gaps in logic and moviven (sic!) In the construction of these robbers and The gendarme story only shines through all the more clearly ”.
