Clive Langer (born June 19, 1954 in Hampstead ) is a British guitarist , producer and composer .

Life

In the late 1970s, Langer was a member of the Deaf School , a band that was somewhere between pub rock and punk . In the studio at the mixer he made a name for himself in the 1980s, especially as the producer of Madness , ex- Deaf School singer Bette Bright and other Stiff Records and Radar / F-Beat Records artists. Langer almost always had Alan Winstanley as a partner; as a producer duo they were known under the abbreviation Clanger / Winstanley . Together they later produced artists such as Elvis Costello , Morrissey , Bush , They Might Be Giants , Lloyd Cole & the Commotions , Sandie Shaw , or the number one hit "Dancing in the Street" (1985) for David Bowie & Mick Jagger .

In 1980 Langer released the album Splash under the band name Clive Langer & the Boxes (with James Eller , bass; Martin Hughes , drums; and Ben Barson , an ex Deaf School buddy and brother of Madness keyboardist Mike Barson , on keyboards) ; a single from the LP was the Womack / Womack standard It's All Over Now .

Together with Elvis Costello , Langer wrote the anti- Falklands war song "Shipbuilding" , a hit that entered the UK charts with two different interpreters : Robert Wyatt (No. 35, 1983) and Tasmin Archer (No. 40, 1994).

Langer also wrote the music for the films Still Crazy (1998) and Brothers of the Head (2006).
