occupation

Kästner and Little Tuesday is a German-Austrian feature film from 2016 about Erich Kästner and Hans Albrecht Löhr . Dorothee Schön wrote the script and Wolfgang Murnberger directed it .

The television film is a biographical drama based on historical facts about the life of Kästner between 1929 and 1945 with special consideration of the development of his friendship with Löhr, a young admirer of his works. The life situation of the socially and time-critical writer, characterized by the ambivalence between pressure to adapt and personal contradiction, is presented against the background of the ending Weimar Republic and the dictatorship of National Socialism in Germany.

action

The young author Erich Kästner succeeds in the Berlin “ Roaring Twenties ” with political poems and becomes a star of the feature pages . In 1929, on a whim, he wrote the children's book Emil and the Detectives , with which he won the hearts of a younger readership. Among his supporters is eight-year-old Hans Albrecht Löhr, who writes a fan letter to Kästner and visits him at home. Kästner is taken with the enthusiasm of the fatherless boy; and for Hans a dream comes true when Emil and the Detectives are to be filmed in 1931 and he is cast for the role of “Little Tuesday”.

Over the years a close friendship developed between Kästner and Löhr, until the National Socialists came to power . Kästner's books are banned and publicly burned ; the idol becomes a danger to the boy, who holds on to the friendship in spite of all odds - until Kästner breaks off contact out of concern for him. While many intellectuals emigrate abroad , Kästner stays in Berlin and keeps himself afloat with the proceeds of his books sold abroad and with writing assignments for scripts under pseudonyms .

After a false report about the death of Kästner, the young man Hans went to see the author again and still stood by the friendship, just as he was with his friend Wolfi, the son of a Jewish father, which repeatedly brought Hans into distress.

When, after the beginning of the Second World War, hopes for a quick end to the war were not fulfilled, when Hans was drafted into the Wehrmacht , Hans finally became a “Primaner in Uniform” - hardly bearable for the convinced pacifist Kästner. After in Gestapo committed suicide -haft his under the pseudonym eoplauen became known friend, the cartoonist and caricaturist Erich Ohser , and were carried out by Allied bombing destroyed his apartment, he finally leaves Berlin. At the end of the war he received the news of Hans Albrecht Löhr's death during a fictitious filming in Tyrol, "killed on the Eastern Front".
