occupation

Luis Trenker - The Thin Line of Truth is a German-Austrian television film by director Wolfgang Murnberger set against two different historical backgrounds: the beginning and rise of two well-known filmmakers in the 1920s and 30s and the search for "new roles" in the post-war period. Peter Probst's screenplay is based on Luis Trenker's involvement in the distribution of Eva Braun's falsified diaries . In the film he writes them by hand on his typewriter. After the premiere on July 2, 2015 at the Munich Film Festival , the film was broadcast for the first time on November 18, 2015 on ARD and ORF .

action

Luis Trenker goes to the Venice Film Festival in the summer of 1948 . There he would like to offer Eva Braun's diaries to the American film agent Paul Kohner , who he knew earlier and who had emigrated from Germany . At the same time, the authenticity of these diaries is being tried before the Munich district court. The director Leni Riefenstahl feels vilified by the implication contained therein that she was Hitler's lover and appears as a joint plaintiff. She accuses her former lover Trenker of having forged the diaries out of vengeance and jealousy and circulated them in order to discredit her as a mistress of the Führer.

In flashbacks, the dependence of the two filmmakers on the judgment of the Propaganda Minister Goebbels is shown, who at the same time needs topics and presentations for his politics that appeal to the moviegoers. In the film, Trenker insists on his independence as a director . Riefenstahl, who was also an attractive woman, played off her contacts to Hitler with Goebbels when her means of production were missing, for example in the film about the Olympic Games, Olympia  (1938). In the whole film, Goebbels is shown again and again when it comes to the power apparatus of the National Socialists .

The nationality question in the trilingual Tyrol plays an important role in the film , where, in addition to the native Ladin dialect and belonging to a valley, there are different degrees of loyalties to Italy and Austria (in the film this is always Germany) and thus to Mussolini and Hitler. Trenker finally opted for German nationality and therefore had to give up his property there, but his hesitation already turned the powerful Nazi giants against him.

According to the script of this film, Trenker who has become rich and the supposedly very power-conscious Nazi director is always concerned with the question of fame in the Hollywood-oriented industry. As an example, Riefenstahl edited a film until shortly before the American invasion. And even if Trenker finally throws the manuscript rejected by the Americans (forged by him) into the water in Venice , according to this standard he “manages” as a success the establishment of his own television series as a “storyteller” in the Federal Republic. A scene is shown in which Trenker passes the “dark times” harmlessly.

background

The film received film funding of over 500,000 euros from FFF Bayern and was shot from June 26 to July 31, 2014 in Munich, South Tyrol and Venice. The first excerpts from the film were presented by Tobias Moretti in April 2015 at the 29th Bolzano Film Festival. The film was produced by the Munich-based Roxy Film , in co-production with the Austrian Epo-Film by Dieter Pochlatko . The Bavarian and Austrian broadcasters were involved .

Reviews

“Wolfgang Murnberger's real grotesque is not just an entertaining portrait of a first-rate character pig. The film is also the psychogram of contemporary alpha animals between dwarfism and megalomania, profile neurosis and awareness of validity, power and powerlessness. "

- Jan Friday : The time

“But the problem with Murnberger's film about Luis Trenker's career in the 'Third Reich' and his attempts to gain a foothold in the film business again in the post-war period is that he doesn't even want to choose between farce and what is now called biopic . "

Audience ratings
