Marigard Bantzer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marigard Bantzer also Marigard Ohser-Bantzer , actually Marie Luise Irmgard Bantzer (born May 29, 1905 in Dresden , † July 3, 1999 in Karlsruhe ) was a German children's book illustrator .

Life

Marigard Bantzer was born as Marie Luise Irmgard Bantzer on May 29, 1905 in Dresden. She was the daughter of the painter, university professor and art writer Carl Bantzer and his wife. She grew up with several siblings in Marburg . In 1924 she began studying at the Academy for Graphic Arts and Book Industry in Leipzig . There she met her future husband Erich Ohser , whom she married on October 18, 1930 in Marburg. She had followed her husband to Berlin in 1928 . There, on December 20, 1931, the only child, Christian Ohser, was born.

At the end of the 1920s she started working as an illustrator, especially of children's books. She worked for the Rudolf Schneider Verlag ( Reichenau and Leipzig), and later for the Otto Maier Verlag Ravensburg . At the beginning of the 1930s she designed her first advent calendar . The initially self-made calendar was sold by Buchbinder Max Voigt from Marburg. As the calendars became a great success and the circulation increased, they eventually had to be printed and Max Voigt became a publisher.

After Erich Ohser was practically banned from working by the National Socialists , Marigard Bantzer had to support the family with her illustration jobs alone. When her husband was finally taken into protective custody, Marigard Bantzer fled with her son from Berlin to Reichenbach an der Fils and Tunau am Bodensee, where she continued to work for Otto Maier Verlag. Finally, on March 28, 1944, Erich Ohser was arrested for " defeatist statements" and would have presumably been sentenced to death in the trial aimed at by the National Socialists. On April 6, 1944, the day the trial was planned to be opened before the People's Court by Roland Freisler , he evaded the judgment, which was deemed to be certain , by suicide .

After the war, Marigard Bantzer and the painter Heinrich Klumbies married . She continued to work for Otto Maier Verlag until 1960 and published numerous books. She died on July 3, 1999 in Karlsruhe.
