Part of Us is a German TV film from 2016. Directed by Nicole Weegmann . The main roles are cast with Jutta Hoffmann , Brigitte Hobmeier , Volker Bruch and Nicholas Reinke .
The film deals with a taboo subject in our society. Children of homeless people often deny their father or mother and thus part of themselves. That their own father or mother leads a life on the street that is usually associated with severe psychological and physical crashes and a "undignified state of life", often puts a heavy burden on the life of relatives and can put your own self-esteem to the test. This television film is about the challenges that a life with a homeless relative, in our case with a mentally ill mother, brings with it.
The film premiered on June 29, 2016 at the Munich Film Festival .
action
Nadja finally has her life under control - a good, fulfilling job, her own apartment and a new love. But after years without contact to her mother Irene, she suddenly appears at Nadja's brother's wedding and breaks back into her life. Nadja succeeds in guiding the rabid mother away from the party. Nadja has to face her family situation again. Because Irene lives on the street and is mentally ill. In the next few days, Nadja will again take care of a place to stay for her. Nadja's brother Micki and her father Norbert do not want any contact with Irene out of self-protection. As always, Nadja is the only one in the family who feels responsible for her mother. But Irene does not allow herself to be patronized. Especially not from your own daughter. Nadja has to learn to put aside her shame, accept her mother's fate and still live her own life.
Ultimately, Nadja gives up a trip with her boyfriend, only to put her mother's life back on a track with a chance of survival.

reception
criticism
Tilmann P. Gangloff wrote for the Frankfurter Rundschau : “An oppressive, but exquisitely played drama with Brigitte Hobmeier as the daughter of a homeless person.” Some of us are “excellently played” and describe “the circumstances unadorned”, Gangloff judged. The “design of the cool November pictures” also ensures that the drama is “anything but heartwarming”. Jutta Hoffmann embodies "the obviously mentally confused mother with merciless consistency as a malicious old woman who is constantly throwing juicy expressions around herself and who nips any sympathy in the bud". Brigitte Hobmeier is much more likely to awaken such feelings. For Jutta Hoffmann, the former Police Call 110 commissioner Wanda Rosenbaum, "the puking and cursing homeless person [...] is a great role that she embodies to the point of bitter praise, regardless of vanity".
Frank Haberland from Der Westen also praised Part of Us as a “brilliantly played drama”. [...] The "social fall of a family member and the consequences for those involved" would be "authentically presented". Such a film stands and falls with the performance of the actors, Haberland continued, and they are “- in short - outstanding”. Regarding Brigitte Hobmeier's performance: "In every expression of Brigitte Hobmeier, especially in the small and withdrawn ones, lies the deepest emotionality." And then "there is Jutta Hoffmann, who with Irene plays a complex, vulgar, pathetic and terrifying figure so convincingly [ e], that one cannot estimate how this film will end up until the end ”. Hobmeier and Hoffmann's achievements "were among the most haunting things the TV year had to offer". Conclusion: "Intense, highly emotional, deeply moving and excellently staffed."
Matthias Hannemann from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung stated, “The film, which can rely on Jutta Hoffmann's acting experience when portraying Irene, does not save on bleak details from the milieu. As a psychological study it is convincing, because it evades flat messages and consistently follows Nadja's point of view ”. Part of us is “a film of great power: deeply sad, slow, circling topics such as family and responsibility carefully, without assigning blame. Take care of yourself in time, he whispers. Without hiding the fact that sometimes that doesn't bring anything ”.
