4 Kings is a German feature film directed by Theresa von Eltz . The film was produced by C-Films in coproduction with Tatami Films, ZDF ( Das kleine Fernsehspiel ) and Arte . The premiere took place on October 4th, 2015 at the Hamburg Film Festival . The cinema release was on December 3, 2015.

The four teenagers Alex, Lara, Timo and Fedja are sent to a juvenile psychiatric ward over the Christmas period because the conflicts at home threaten to escalate. While everyone spends the contemplative days outside with their loved ones, the four only have themselves. At first they seem to be an explosive mixture, but the unconventional psychiatrist Dr. Wolff, to guide the young people in an orderly manner. They open up and spend a festival that is unique to them.
criticism
The film service judges that in the "drama, which is described entirely from the perspective of the young people, parents do not get away well as mentally crippled adults, while the production devotes a lot of space and time to the angular protagonists and invites them to look and listen closely." The “finely balanced film, with its small humorous touches and a subtle glimmer of hope, is carried by the talented young actors”.
Educators judge the film from a pedagogical point of view: "The film paints an unrealistic picture of a psychiatry , since basic and binding rules are disregarded. The duty of supervision is neglected, since the patients freely decide where they are. They are also often emphasized are voluntary in psychiatry, even though it is a closed institution. Also, many obvious safety precautions are not observed. For example there is no safety glass or bars in the window that Fedja leans out of. The young people have access to sharp objects such as the clothes rack with which Timo attacks the nurse; alcohol and cigarettes are also relatively freely accessible, unlike in a real psychiatry. The behavior of the staff is unprofessional in some places, which even provokes patients with their sensitive problems. Also surprising that there are more staff than patients n there and still the young people are housed in pairs, although the young people's diagnoses make a living situation in a confined space unsuitable.
