The series was developed by Philipp Käßbohrer , Matthias Murmann , Stefan Titze and Sebastian Colley and is about the nerd Moritz, who founds Europe's largest online drug retailer with his best friend Lenny in order to win back his ex-girlfriend. The series is loosely based on the story of the then 18-year-old Maximilian S., who started an online drug trade from his children's room in Leipzig-Gohlis at the end of 2013 to 2015 under the code name "Shiny Flakes".

action

In a somewhat later future, the events of the story will be told by Moritz personally. Moritz Zimmermann is sitting at a table in a room and is speaking to the audience. He also often takes on the role of the narrator .

season 1

Moritz, a nerd, is in a relationship with his childhood friend Lisa Novak. During her stay abroad she changed, so she ended her relationship with Moritz and began to spend time with the popular Dan Riffert. When Moritz learns that Lisa took ecstasy during her year abroad , he asks his friend Lenny for help to get her back. Moritz finds Dan's dealer Jakob “Buba” Otto and buys his entire supply of ecstasy in the hope that Dan Lisa has nothing to offer. Since he doesn't have enough money, he blackmailed him and stole his drugs. He promises to give him the missing money. At Lisa's party he tries to speak to her, but is humiliated by Dan. Due to his debts with Buba, Moritz plans to sell the bag of ecstasy online.

Lisa's parents find an ecstasy pill from the party the next day, and Lisa contacts Dan to help her. Since Moritz still has access to her Facebook account, he starts deleting messages from Dan to give the illusion that Dan is ignoring Lisa and goes to Lisa to help her. Moritz then reconfigures his and Lenny's game market “MyTems” to sell ecstasy pills on the Darknet under the name “MyDrugs”. Lenny hesitates at first because he's tired of Moritz's failed attempts, but is convinced and orders begin. Dan is questioned by the police about his possession of ecstasy and asked to reveal his dealer.

Buba tracks down Moritz and Lenny and demands the missing money that Moritz owes him. When Buba found out about MyDrugs, he asked for 10,000 euros from the profits. It turns out that when orders are high, the ratings for the pills are rated as low and Moritz accepts the help of a user named "PurpleRain". Dan asks Lisa if she's ignoring him, which Lisa denies. Dan tries to text her again. When Lisa sees Moritz erasing them, she calls him over the school intercom. Buba is arrested and taken into custody, and Moritz and Lenny pick up the first package from PurpleRain. Moritz is avoided at school and Lisa blocked him. He and Lenny are now planning to open MyDrugs for the Clear Web .

Mr. Zimmermann, police officer and Moritz's father, asks his son to help him and the police crack Buba's laptop. There is content from him and Lenny on the laptop, which is why Moritz decides to delete all the content from the laptop. A short time later, Lenny finds out that his mother wants to replace him with a foster child after his death.

MyDrugs appears on the Clear Web and both Moritz and Lenny have a formal dinner. Moritz reveals to Lenny that he has signed a contract with manufacturer GoodTimes in Rotterdam to expand the MyDrugs product range, but Lenny attacks Moritz, claiming that Moritz has forgotten the friendship they had and is only interested in business . Lenny is fed up and leaves Moritz. Moritz accepts the invitation to his classmate Gerda's birthday party and sees Dan and Lisa kissing. Moritz then leaves the party, but Gerda kisses him briefly. A little later, Gerda suffers an overdose of ecstasy and has to go to the hospital.

Buba is released from custody for lack of evidence and kidnaps Lenny. Moritz tries to save Lenny together with Dan. However, the rescue fails. Buba tries to kill Dan for his betrayal, then Lenny pulls out his hidden self-made pistol and tries to shoot Buba, which he fails. Buba makes fun of the three and accidentally shoots himself. The three decide to put their problems aside and work on MyDrugs together. MyDrugs on the Clear Web is an instant hit, GoodTimes decides to ship the pills direct. After Lisa watches Moritz's video, which was stuck to Lisa's present with a link, she reconciles with Moritz and ends her relationship with Dan.

Lisa and Lenny from the later future are shown in the credits, who doubt Moritz's version of the events.

production

On October 25, 2018, Netflix announced at Medientage Munich that it would be producing five more original German-language series after Dark and Dogs of Berlin , including How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) , at that time still under the title Don't Try This At Home . The series is produced by the bildundtonfabrik based in Cologne - Ehrenfeld , which is using it to produce its first fictional series. Showrunners and Executive Producers are Philipp Käßbohrer and Matthias Murmann . The series was written by Philipp Käßbohrer, Sebastian Colley and Stefan Titze . Lars Montag (episodes 1–3) and Arne Feldhusen (episodes 4–6) direct . Armin Franzen is responsible for the camera .

Guest appearances have u. a. Jonathan Frakes as himself, Hinnerk Schönemann as Daniel's father, Ulrike Folkerts as Lennard's mother, Olli Schulz as Gerda's uncle and Florentin Will as a policeman.

On December 17, 2018, Netflix announced that filming for the first season had been completed.

The series celebrated its world premiere on April 6, 2019 in Cannes as part of the Canneseries series festival .

The first season has been available worldwide on Netflix since May 31, 2019. On July 9, 2019, the production company announced via Twitter that the second season would appear on July 21, 2020.

Locations

The Röttgen district of Bonn serves as a cartographic template for the fictional city of Rinseln . The film was also shot in the neighboring district of Ippendorf . In addition, individual scenes were shot in places in the area, such as Sankt Augustin near Siegburg / Bonn. The name of the 28,000-inhabitant city of Rinseln in the television series is reminiscent of Rinteln , which has a similar population with 27,133 and also has the same public facilities, a gymnasium and indoor swimming pool. Rinteln became known in the media because, like Rinseln in the television series, it is considered a typical German average city and was therefore selected by RTL as an electoral city for the 2017 federal election. The protagonists attend the fictional Anton-Köllisch-Gymnasium, Köllisch was the first chemist to synthesize MDMA in 1912. In fact, it is the Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium in Cologne-Weiden .
