Jonathan Scott Frakes (born August 19, 1952 in Bellefonte , Pennsylvania ) is an American actor , director and television presenter . He was best known for his role as Cmdr. William T. Riker in the television series Spaceship Enterprise: The Next Century and his host of the mystery television series X-Factor: The Incredible .

Life

Jonathan Frakes was born as the son of Dr. James Frakes and Doris Yingling were born and raised in Pennsylvania. Most of his ancestors came from Germany and England. After high school, Frakes decided to study psychology at Pennsylvania State University , but later majored and studied drama . The reason was probably that he worked as an usher in a theater . He later moved to Harvard University , where he learned and worked at the Loeb Drama Center . After graduating, he moved to New York, where he tried to make his way as an actor. He starred in a number of Broadway plays and toured the country as Captain America for Marvel Comics .

He first appeared on the television screen in the television series The Doctors , in which he played the role of Tom Carroll. He then moved to Los Angeles, where other series and theater appearances followed. He first achieved a certain degree of notoriety through his portrayal of Stanley Hazard in the multi-part TV series Torches in the Storm . During the filming, he met his future wife, Genie Francis .

After the second season of Torches in the Storm , he received the role of first officer William Riker in the television series Starship Enterprise: The Next Century in 1987 , which he embodied in 176 episodes and four movies. Jonathan Frakes first directed the episode "Data's Descendants" . After further episodes of this series, he took over the director's chair in various Star Trek episodes of Deep Space Nine and Voyager . When the Enterprise crew around Captain Picard switched to the big screen, he worked on the Star Trek films Star Trek: The First Contact (1996) and Star Trek: The Uprising (1998) both as an actor and as a director . Frakes is the only actor who has appeared in five different Star Trek series, and has also worked as a director for as many.

Because of his efficient directing in Star Trek: The First Contact , he was nicknamed "Two-Takes Frakes". In addition to various episodes of other series ( Roswell ), he made the feature film Clockstoppers in 2002 and the real- life adaptation of the Supermarionation classic Thunderbirds in 2004 , both of which were not very successful. From 1994 to 1997 he dubbed the villain David Xanatos in the Disney cartoon series Gargoyles - On the Wings of Justice . Since 2006 he has worked as a director primarily for television.

From 1998 to 2002 Jonathan Frakes was the presenter of the mystery series X-Factor: The Unbelievable , in which he presented mysterious stories that were either based on supposedly true events or were fictitious. In 2019, Frakes returned to this role as part of a parody in the German series How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) .

In 2020, Frakes played the role of William T. Riker again in the television series Star Trek: Picard . He also directed two episodes.

Personal

Frakes' younger brother died of pancreatic cancer in 1997 . Since 1988 he has been married to the actress Genie Francis ; the two have a son (* 1994) and a daughter (* 1997) and residences in California and in the state of New York .

In the German versions, Jonathan Frakes was mainly dubbed by Detlef Bierstedt , who lent him his voice in the series Raumschiff Enterprise: The next century , as well as in the film Star Trek - Meetings of the Generations and in his guest appearances in other Star Trek television series. Since the film distribution did not accept its higher fee, Bierstedt was replaced by Tom Vogt in the last three Star Trek films . In the series X-Factor: The Inconceivable Detlef Bierstedt was also predominantly heard as Frakes' German voice, but Michael Christian was cast in the third season, who already dubbed him in Torches in the Storm .
