The German-language first broadcast took place on June 24, 2011 on TNT Serie .

The fifth and final season contains ten episodes and aired from June 28 to August 30, 2015.

action

Falling Skies tells the story of an invasion of aliens (of the surviving humans "Skitter" and "mechs" called, the latter are controlled by the aliens fighting robots) and follows a group of survivors. In the course of the invasion, the aliens severely decimated humanity , killed adults and turned children into slaves by means of a parasite connected to the central nervous system , the so-called control. The aim of the reconnaissance group around the military historian and vice-commander of the resistance cell "The Second Massachusetts" Tom Mason, the protagonist of the series, is to collect information and, above all, to find out about the plans of the aliens. They later learn that the same parasite was transplanted to the skitters as the children, which is why they suspect that they used to be "something else". They also discover another alien species called "overlords" who, unlike the skitters, have a humanoid body shape and apparently command the skitters. There are also spider-like aliens that can eat their way through anything, even steel. At the end of the second season, the "Second Mass" succeeds in an attack against the aliens and an overlord is killed. Previously, a group of rebels within the foreign alliance had given the people the information they needed about this attack. Season two ends with a new species landing on the planet. For the time being it remains unknown whether these are further enemy intruders or new allies.

At the beginning of the third season, the new aliens - the "Volm" - turn out to be allies who - for generations - have been waging war against the Overlords (called "Espheni" by the Volm). The new allies equip the people with advanced weapons and technologies that make it possible, for example, to remove the control parasites without leaving any residue or to destroy “Mechs”. The Espheni answer to this is more and more powerful air strikes and huge, heavily armored mega-mechs. Tom has now been elected President of the "New United States" and the general situation of the people has since improved. However, despite the help of the "Volm" and the Skitter rebels, no decisive victory has yet been achieved. Towards the end of the season, Karen, the new overlord, kidnaps Anne Glass and her daughter Alexis, known as Lexi, and activates a network around the entire planet that is impenetrable from the outside, which radiates the atmosphere for humans and other earthly forms of life within a few months becomes. In an attack by the Espheni on the base of the Volm - with the exception of the speaker "Cochise" - all of the allied aliens are killed. The high-energy Volm weapon buried under the destroyed Volm base can eventually be excavated and used against the Espheni base in Boston, which is being destroyed. The energy network around the earth collapses and a large Volm ship lands in Boston. Although the alien friends continue the fight alone and want to transfer the human survivors to a safe reserve in Brazil, Tom Mason is able to convince the Commander of the Volm to let the people continue their war against the occupiers as well. Karen is shot dead at a meeting between Tom Mason and Maggie; Anne Glass and Lexi are released.

At the beginning of the fourth season, the main characters of the "Second Massachusetts" are separated by an attack by the Espheni on Charleston. These use innovative laser fences that fence the entire area around Charleston and make it safe to break out. The others who can escape the fence find themselves partly in the paradisiacal Chinatown or have to make their way outside. In the ghetto, Cochise gives Tom more information about the Espheni's most important source of energy. Only a handful of Volm troops remain on Earth as his father has already written the Earth off. Tom plans an escape from the ghetto with Weaver, Hal, Pope and the newly arrived Dingaan, which also succeeds. Ben wakes up in heavenly Chinatown, where no weapons are allowed and no war is going on. Lexi has evolved from a little girl into a grown woman in four months and seems to rule the place. She secretly meets with an Espheni whom she considers to be her father. Meanwhile, Anne is desperately looking for her daughter Lexi and has turned into a fighter who will stop at nothing to find her daughter. All the characters meet again in Chinatown, while Lexi is in a cocoon in which she changes due to her alien DNA. After the metamorphosis, she kills her greatest admirer, Lourdes, and fled to her Espheni father. Since Lexi has left Chinatown, the Espheni attack the settlement. After a maneuver of deception by the people, the enemy leaves again, believing that they have destroyed all life in Chinatown. A little later, Cochise finds out that the Espheni's energy source is on the moon. In the plan to destroy them, they use a shot down and partially repaired Espheni bomber. Tom and Ben will be drawn as pilots. Because Lexi returns and offers to help with the mission, she replaces Ben as a pilot. Lexi is able to destroy the Espheni's energy source in a kamikaze action, while Tom is thrown into space with the bomber. He is later rescued by a new breed of alien that he thinks is beautiful.

Tom lands on earth at the beginning of the fifth season and returns to the "Second Massachusetts". The conflict between Tom and Pope escalates and Pope leaves the group with several people. An Espheni communications relay is discovered in a barn, which Ben can use to learn more about the Espheni plans. The Espheni have established headquarters in Washington, DC and are gathering their troops there. There is also supposed to be a "higher being", a kind of "queen" of the aliens. Communication with other human militias improves, and Tom calls all available troops to Washington for a big blow. On the way there, the Second Massachusetts encounters a military unit led by an acquaintance of Weaver. Because of their many contacts with the Espheni and the Volm, they are considered to be allies of the enemy and Tom, Ben, Anne and Hal are put before a firing squad. But Weaver can convince the soldiers of their innocence and in return expose the commander as an artificial alien hybrid. Lexi also returns as an artificial hybrid and wants to kill Tom, but is killed herself. Attacks by Pope's men and the Espheni also only briefly set back the attack on Washington. Ben finds out that the Espheni Queen is at the Lincoln Memorial . During the attack on Washington, Tom penetrates through a tunnel to the memorial and is able to kill the queen with an alien bioweapon. As a result, the Espheni network collapses and all Espheni die.

After the war ended, Matt wrote a chronicle of the "Last World War". Tom is to be elected the new president.

characters

main characters

Thomas "Tom" Mason

Tom is the single father of Hal, Ben and Matt after his wife Rebecca was killed by the aliens. You lived in Cambridge , where Tom was a history professor at a college there. He is the deputy leader of the second Massachusetts who always remains optimistic. Little by little, he became friends with Anne. At the end of the first season he kisses her and goes with the aliens to protect Ben from them. After three months he returns to his troop because the aliens let him go. There he is met with suspicion because he had a parasite in his eye that Anne can remove. Pope even tries to force him to choose between dying and leaving the 2nd. Later he meets Anne; she becomes pregnant in the second season. In season three, he is named President of the New United States , but resigns to find Anne, who has disappeared with their child.

Dr. Anne Glass

Anne is a pediatrician, which is why she cares for the sick and injured. It also helps the children to cope with the situation emotionally, e.g. B. through painting therapy . She is Scott's niece and lost her little son Sam and her husband in the invasion. She helps Dr. Harris in the process of removing the transplanted parasites from the previously captured children. They also study the skitters together. Anne and Tom become good friends during this time; they kiss in the first season finale, after which they meet later. At the end of the second season, she learns that she is pregnant. However, her baby Lexi behaves very strangely, it can speak and stand after just a few days. A DNA test shows that it is a hybrid.

Hal Mason

Hal is the 17-year-old son of Tom and Rebecca and the big brother of Ben and Matt. He is a brave fighter and driver of the second Massachusetts who meets Karen there. Before the aliens appeared, he was a sporty and popular student in high school . After Karen is kidnapped, he befriends Maggie, with whom he later falls in love. In the third season it turns out that he is under the control of the Espheni, but he can be freed from it with the help of a cure from the Skitter rebels.

Matthew "Matt" Mason

Matt is the eight-year-old son of Tom and Rebecca and the little brother of Hal and Ben. He wants his old life, but still wants to fight alongside his brothers and his father. He will be 9 years old during the first season.

Lourdes Delgado

Lourdes is a staunch Christian and went to a nursing school where she took a basic course in anatomy . Her medical studies were quickly finished by the aliens. She initially kept an eye on Hal and had a good relationship with Anne, who she helps with the sick and injured. She is originally from Mexico City and moved to the United States with her parents when she was ten. In the second season she falls in love with Jamil; after he is killed, she loses her faith. From Diego, the friend of Weaver's daughter, she learns that northern Mexico has been practically wiped out. In the third season it turns out that Lourdes has several eyeworms and was responsible for all increasingly violent acts of sabotage, including the assassination of the elected President of the USA, who survived the attack, but at a "summit" between the Charleston group and what was left of the regular government was injured and brought to Charleston. At the end of season three, she blows up part of the underground base and is arrested. In the middle of the fourth season she is killed by Lexi.

Anthony

Anthony is a Second Massachusetts fighter who used to be a Boston cop . He often messes with Pope, but is rescued by Pope in the first season finale after an attack in which he is seriously injured.

Margaret "Maggie"

Maggie is a fearless and strong woman. She was picked up by Pope's troupe, but raped by two members, one of whom was John Pope's brother . She joins the second Mass after killing the two and pledges as a fighter. At the age of 16 she had several brain tumors , which could be removed successfully. After that, she became addicted to drugs and started stealing. She was caught and sent to a reformatory where her pregnancy was determined and she gave birth to a son who was taken away from her. She becomes friends with Hal and develops feelings for him.

John Pope

Pope is a survivor who does not believe in the resistance and is captured by the second Massachusetts after attacking them with his troops. There he is employed as a cook, ammunition manufacturer and fighter. He has invented ammunition that is particularly effective against the 'Mechs and takes a liking to killing Skitters. According to his own information, he was in prison for manslaughter and is the father of a daughter and a son who live or lived with their mother in Florida . He leaves the group twice, once he escapes, the second time he leaves voluntarily because he doubts Tom Mason's story and does not want to trust him anymore, but is found injured and then sticks to it. There seems to be more to Pope than “just” a prison cook. B. the molecular formula of an explosive at a glance and declares it to be too weak. In the course of the series, Pope gains a high reputation within society because he can get almost anything and runs a kind of mobile market and a bar, but because of his open criticism of Mason and Weaver he repeatedly clashes with them, but still connects him and Tom a kind of love-hate relationship, both seem to dislike each other, but can always rely on each other in a fight and save each other's lives several times.

Ben Mason

Ben is the 15 year old son of Tom and Rebecca and the brother of Hal and Matt. He was kidnapped by the aliens and had a parasite transplanted by them. He is discovered by Hal, can be rescued and part of the parasite is removed. The remaining "spines" protruding from his backbone enable him to communicate directly with the skitters, as well as a physical performance that goes far beyond the human level. Before the invasion, he had a bad rapport with Hal and loved to read. He has been a fighter since season two, later leaving the second season. He joins the resistance within the aliens and returns towards the end of season 2 to the second mass to carry out an attack against an overlord together with the humans. At the end of the season he decides to stay with his family again. A complete removal of the "spines" he refuses for the time being in view of his higher performance.

Captain Daniel "Dan" Weaver

Weaver is the mostly rational leader of the second Massachusetts who lost his daughter Sophia to the attacks. He never gives up hope that his ex-wife Linda and older daughter Jeanne are still alive. In the second season he meets Jeanne, who tells him that Linda is dead. He meets Jeanne again at the end of the season in Charleston. When he took over the leadership of the second Massachusetts at the beginning of the series, Tom Mason was assigned to him as deputy. Both initially have their problems with the other, but as the story progresses they learn to respect each other. Weaver is a dry alcoholic but suffers several brief relapses due to the desperate situation.

Dai

Dai was a professional soldier and is now a fighter and driver of the Second Massachusetts. He looks happy in a certain way as he did not lose any relatives or lovers in the invasion as he is single. In the second season finale, he is killed by a skitter.

Karen Nadler

Karen was a high school student and, like Hal, is a good scout and fighter for the Second Massachusetts and in a relationship with him. She is kidnapped by the aliens and a parasite is implanted in her. In the middle of the second season she is found by the second mass and later exposed as a spy of the Overlords. In the third season, now fully infected, she succeeds the Overlord, but is under surveillance and does not have all the rights of an Espheni leader. At the end of the third season, she is killed by Maggie.

Cochise

Cochise is the son of the military leader of the Volm and their main contact with the people. His character is very similar to that of Tom Mason, so he is rather peaceful, but ready to give everything in the fight against the Espheni. He also equips the 2nd Mass with new, better weapons. In contrast to his father, he understands and supports the struggle of the people and speaks openly against the planned resettlement of the survivors to Brazil by the Volm. He is badly injured in battle, but since the Volm have genetically adapted to battle, his wounds heal very quickly. He mentions never having seen his homeland, as he was born in space, because the Volm have been chasing after the Espheni for centuries and trying to free inhabited worlds from them.

Minor characters

Jimmy Boland

Jimmy is a 13-year-old Second Massachusetts fighter from Boston who sees Weaver as a father figure after saving his life. He is killed by a skitter in season two.

Scott

Scott is Anne's uncle and teaches the children of the Second Massachusetts. He tries to establish contact with other resistances and to disrupt communication with the aliens. At the beginning of the second season, we learn that he has died.

Mike Thompson

Mike is a Second Massachusetts soldier and the father of Rick. He is shot dead by the leader of the Seventh Massachusetts, as he trades children to the Skitters for the lives of his small remaining troop. When the children of the 2nd degree, lured into the trap, want to flee, he covers the escape and dies in the process.

Rick Thompson

Rick is the son of Mike and an alien kidnapped child. A parasite is planted in him, but this can partly be done by Dr. Harris to be removed. After that, however, he still feels a part of the Skitters and would like to join them voluntarily. He betrays the second Massachusetts, but then realizes it was a mistake. In the second season you learn that he has disappeared, but he reappears in the middle of the second season, where he is accidentally shot by a fighter of the second degree.

Colonel Jim Porter

Porter leads the resistance in Massachusetts. He was in Desert Storm with Weaver . At first you think he was killed in a skirmish, but then months later he shows up near Charleston when the second arrives.

Dr. Michael Harris

Dr. Harris is a scientist who wants to find out how to remove the children's parasites without causing permanent damage or even death. He also studies the captured Skitter, who later kills him.

Jamil Dexter

Jamil works as a mechatronics technician in the second degree, where he meets Lourdes. He is killed by the spider-like aliens.

Jeanne Weaver

Jeanne is the daughter of Weaver and the late Linda. After encountering the second mass, after a while she continues with her small group, led by her friend Diego. She and her father meet again in Charleston. In ep.4.04 we learn that she has been transformed into a human-skitter hybrid. She is killed trying to protect her father.

Dr. Arthur Manchester

Arthur was a former mentor of Tom, who now holds political leadership in Charleston. He is relieved of his position as part of a military takeover. Previously, he had advocated no military action against the aliens, but rather to wait and see. At the beginning of the third season he is shot dead by Lourdes with a Volm handgun.

General Bressler

General Bressler is the military leader in the Charleston military. He takes over the leadership in Charleston with the help of a coup and wants to be active in the fight against the aliens himself. He is critical of the views of Tom Mason and Captain Weaver, but gives them the chance to attack the Overlord and agrees to reinstate a civilian leadership later. Bressler dies in a plane crash after rescuing Pope and Tom by making an emergency landing in a forest.

"Red-Eye"

Red-Eye is the leader of the Skitter Rebellion and has allied himself with Ben Mason; he can communicate with people by means of Ben's spines (remnants of the parasites called “controls”). Ben speaks for him. Red-Eye tries several times to get people to his side and even risks his life for doing so. Since people ignore his request to meet, he penetrates the underground facility in Charleston, but without acting aggressively. He only has one eye; the other resembles - eponymous - due to an injury in a fight of a red ball. He is killed by an overlord in the attack on the superweapon, but asks the dying people to continue the fight with the Skitter rebels. In memory of him, the rebels color half of their faces red, which also allows them to be distinguished from loyal skitters.

Species (other than humans)

Espheni

The attackers, who only appear towards the end of the first season, are tall, slim humanoids with strong physical and mental powers. They are apparently unable to speak or do not want to, preferring to communicate through controlled children. It seems as if the Espheni do not follow a central leadership, as different "overlords" have their own plans and goals. In the fifth season it becomes apparent that all Espheni are controlled by a central intelligence, the "Queen".

Skitters

An insectoid species that initially appears unintelligent and provides the Espheni infantry and frontline soldiers. In the course of time it turns out that the skitters can think and feel very well, and the form in which they can be seen is not their natural one, but is caused in the long term by the same control that is implanted in human children. Some skitters are so strong-willed that they can break the controls and create momentary resistance.

Drones

Drones are biomechanical spaceships of the Espheni. Among other things, they bombard cities with their neutron bombs. In season 2, the inner workings of a drone are shown for a short time, which is similar to controlling the skitter and controlled children. They are not to be confused with projectors, which have a complete life support system and are much larger than drones. In contrast to drones, projectors can be used as interplanetary transport ships.

Volm

The Volm are a species that is very similar to humans in many ways. They are humanoid, but have black and gray, leathery skin, large eyes and a deep “Darth Vader” voice. You are allied with humans, but you also have your own agenda. The behavior is also very similar to that of people: they use colloquial language, have no fear of contact (e.g. when hugs or greetings), but try to be polite and sometimes do not understand linguistic stylistic devices such as irony and sarcasm immediately or incorrectly, learn but do it quickly and use them yourself. The Volm are genetically improved and can heal themselves very quickly from wounds or poisoning in a kind of healing trance. They have been waging war against the Espheni for generations, and both species seem to be short of resources and soldiers. At the beginning of the fourth season one learns of the withdrawal of the Volm from the earth to protect their families from the Espheni; only Cochise and a few other Volm remain on earth.

Hornets

Hornets are highly developed skitters who lack any free will. They have wings, but have lost their legs and thus their ability to walk. Mostly, skitters who belonged to the rebellion are converted into hornets.
