The monthly magazine often contains articles written by militia cadres or professional personnel of the armed forces on military exercises and events, armaments and technology, Swiss military history, developments in the Swiss armed forces and in foreign armed forces, as well as statements on security issues. Unlike the Allgemeine Schweizerische Militärzeitschrift , which, as an organ of the Swiss Officers' Society, addresses the higher-educated cadre, the Swiss soldier is primarily aimed at senior NCOs, NCOs, private and soldiers.

The magazine has a WEMF - certified circulation of 16,444 (previous year 16,111) sold / distributed copies. It is published by a private company founded in 1926, but according to the imprint it is sent free of charge to all German-speaking active army cadres from the levels of sergeant to major. The cooperative is supported by NCOs and officers of the Swiss Army as well as the Swiss NCOs Association (SUOV) and the Swiss Officers Association (SOG). The Swiss soldier is a member of the European Military Press Association (EMPA), the union of the European military press.

Organizational matters

Captain Frederik Besse has been the editor-in-chief since 2019. According to the Swiss government, the magazine is independent and not funded by the army.
