Star Trek: Picard is an American science fiction - television series , published since 2020, and the seventh live-action television series, in the fictional Star Trek - universe plays. The eponymous protagonist of the series is Jean-Luc Picard , who - as in the previous series Spaceship Enterprise - The Next Century and the four films based on it - is played by Patrick Stewart .

The 10-part first season , which was also released in German on Amazon's streaming service Prime Video in the first quarter of 2020 , addresses Picard's attempts to prevent a Romulan sect from destroying androids.

Plot of the first season

In the course of the season, the prelude to the main story, which begins in 2399, 20 years after the events from the movie Star Trek: Nemesis, unfolds mainly through flashbacks that are interspersed in the plot .

prehistory

Hundreds of years ago, a group of Romulan researchers discovered a planet that is in the middle of a very rare eight-star system. That is why they paid special attention to a message they believed to be found on this planet. They judged it as a warning of a long gone civilization before the creation of artificial life, according to which a so-called "destroyer" would extinguish all life if artificial life forms should reach a certain high level of development. In order to prevent the appearance of the "destroyer", members of the Romulan group then founded the sect Zhat Vash , which dedicated itself to the rejection and destruction of artificial forms of life. When Dr. Noonien Soong once managed to create Data and other androids, the sect began to infiltrate the Federation . The sect is now hiding its secret activities with the help of the Romulan secret service Tal Shiar .

14 years before the start of the main plot , the Zhat Vash carries out a coordinated act of sabotage against the Federation, thereby achieving its goal of the Federation stopping the further development of artificial life forms. In the act of sabotage, the sect causes several Federation androidids , which work in the Utopia Planitia fleet yard in Mars orbit, to destroy the entire spacecraft fleet there, to bomb the surface of Mars and, as a result, to set fire to the planet's atmosphere, killing tens of thousands. As a result of these events, the federation leadership also breaks off the rescue of numerous Romulans, which was necessary because of the impending destruction of their homeworld by an impending supernova . Admiral Picard, as head of the planned rescue mission, resigns from Starfleet to protest this decision and then retires to his country residence in France.

Three years before the main story begins, Dr. Bruce Maddox, the former head of android research in the Federation, to create two perfect androids from his point of view. Their names are Dahj and Soji, they look like roughly 30-year-old female twins and are also considered his daughters because of their shape, which is based on Datas drawings. Equipped with false memories that make them unaware of their artificiality, Maddox sends them to different places to investigate a possible conspiracy.

Main storyline

After Dahj was attacked by Romulans in her Boston apartment, she turned to Picard for help. After brief contact with him, she is killed by Romulan agents in San Francisco . From Maddox's assistant Dr. Jurati learns from Picard that Dahj has a sister named Soji. Since he believes her life is also in danger, he starts a mission to find Maddox first. Because his request to the Federation government for a spaceship is unsuccessful, he independently organizes a spaceship, the La Sirena, under the command of the human being Rios, and a diverse crew. The crew also includes Dr. Jurati, who, without the knowledge of Picard and his followers, serves as an agent for the Zhat Vash . Together they fly to Maddox's last known whereabouts, the planet Freecloud . On the way they are joined by Seven of Nine , who happens to have the same destination. Once there, the team obtains the release of Maddox from captivity of a gang boss and learns from him Soji's whereabouts, a Borg cube in Romulan possession , which is called the "artifact". Controlled mentally by the Zhat Vash , Dr. Jurati Dr. Maddox.

Picard and his team discover Soji on the cube, where she has been working on the rehabilitation of former Borg drones and has a love affair with the Romulan Narek. He secretly spies with his sister Narissa for the Zhat Vash with the aim of finding out from Soji the location of their homeworld where they hope to kill their suspected conspecifics, other artificial life forms. Through Narek's interrogations, Soji becomes aware of her true identity and her home planet and can use her superhuman abilities to thwart her killing by Narek. Picard has himself and Soji teleported out of the cube with the help of the former Borg drone Hugh, which brings them to the planet Nepenthe , the home of Picard's former crew members Riker and Troi . With the La Sirena the two then fly to the planet Coppelius , the homeworld of Soji, where Soji is welcomed by other androids. You will also meet Dr. Noonien Soong's son Dr. Altan Inigo Soong. One of the androids there, during a mind-melding with Dr. Jurati states that the "warning" is actually not addressed to the Romulans, but to the androids, and comes from an alliance of artificial life forms that offer protection from destruction by organic life.

Meanwhile, a fleet of Romulan warships approaches the planet Coppelius , led by Commodore Oh, a senior agent of the Zhat Vash . Oh actually serves as Starfleet's chief security officer and is giving up her cover when she arrives. When Captain Riker confronts her with a fleet of Starfleet spaceships, she orders the withdrawal of her fleet after Soji renounces contact with the alliance of artificial life forms.

Picard eventually succumbs to a brain disease, but wakes up shortly afterwards in a new body that Dr. Altan Inigo Soong has worked.
