Structure of the program
The View (original: "The View from Here") is a talk show that is broadcast live Monday through Friday from 11:00 to 12:00. In the first part of the program, usually five women discuss current news on social and political issues, the tabloids and celebrity news. In the second part, one or more star guests are usually interviewed.
Barbara Walters explained the structure in the first broadcast as follows:
“A I've always wanted to do a show with women of different generations, backgrounds and views: a working mother [Vieira]; a professional in her 30s [Jones]; a young woman just starting out [Matenopoulos]; and then somebody who's done almost everything and will say almost anything [Behar]. And in a perfect world, I'd get to join the group whenever I wanted .... "
“I've always wanted a show with women of different generations, backgrounds and views: a working mother [Vieira] ; a professional in her thirties [Jones] ; a young woman who is just getting started [Matenopoulos] ; and then someone who has done almost everything and says almost everything [Behar] . And in a perfect world I would join the group whenever I wanted ... "
Since the first broadcast, every broadcast has been presented, usually by the main presenter, with the words "Have a great day everyone and take a little time to enjoy The View!" (Have a nice day and take some time to enjoy The View .) Started.
The first years
Original cast
The talk show started with the following presenters: Meredith Vieira , Star Jones, Debbie Matenopoulos, and Barbara Walters . Joy Behar and Barbara Walters changed from 1997 to 1998 on a weekly basis. Debbie Matenopoulos was criticized by viewers with the argument that she did not fit into the show. Some critics also agreed with this opinion. Therefore, ABC broke the contract with her in 1999 and the journalist Lisa Ling became the new co-host.
In 2002 Lisa Ling got out again and switched to the National Geographic Channel , a year later journalist Elisabeth Hasselbeck was introduced as the new co-host.
Season 10
2006 Meredith Vieira left the show and then hosted the morning show on NBC , the Today Show .
During the 33rd Daytime Emmy Awards in 2006, Rosie O'Donnell was introduced as the new main presenter. Star Jones, who disagreed with O'Donnell's signing as the new lead host because she had previously joked about Star Jones' severe weight loss, allegedly associated with illness, left the talk show in response.
Season 11
In 2007 O'Donnel left the talk show after an argument with Elisabeth Hasselbeck. According to O'Donnell, however, it was not the argument itself, but its distorted or exaggerated presentation, that was the reason for their departure. In September 2007, the actresses Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd were presented as a new main presenter and a new co-presenter. The View is the first talk show on US television to be hosted by two "blacks" and two "whites" .
Season 13
Barbara Walters was sidelined during season 13 due to heart surgery. It made its comeback the day before the season finale, in which Barack Obama was a guest. He was the first US president to attend a talk show.
Season 14
Season 14 started on September 7, 2010. A week later, the show celebrated its 3000th show, which looked back on the best moments of previous seasons. On October 14, 2010, Bill O'Reilly was a guest who spoke out clearly against the construction of a Muslim cultural center in New York City. This resulted in a heated discussion between the guest and the moderators Goldberg and Behar. Later in the discussion, O'Reilly said, "Muslims killed us on 9/11!" . Behar was deeply shocked by the statement, got up and said: "I don't want to sit next to this man" and left the studio, Goldberg followed her. The applause that followed was immediately stopped by Walters, saying, “ You just saw what shouldn't happen. We should be able to have a calm conversation and no one should leave the studio. ” Walters apologized to O'Reilly, and he agreed. Behar and Goldberg came back later and the interview continued calmly.
Season 15 & 16
Beginning with season 15, Barbara Walters paused on Fridays and the "Men Friday" section was introduced where a different co-presenter sat on Barbara Walters Square every Friday. At the end of season 16, Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck said goodbye to the show and Barbara Walter announced that she would retire in the middle of season 17 (May 2014).
Season 17
Season 17 started with big changes, a new studio design and a new co-host. Joy Behar has been replaced by Jenny McCarthy ; Elisabeth Hasselbeck has no successor, she is being replaced by changing co-moderators. On May 16, 2014, Barbara Walters , the "inventor" and the last presenter of the regular cast from 1997, left the show to retire. Throughout the season there have been major problems and quota they lost during the entire season the competitors The Talk of CBS . At the end of this season (June 2014) it was announced that the co-host Sherri Shepherd will leave the talk show and the contract with Jenny McCarthy has not been renewed.
Season 18
Due to the very low ratings in season 17, the decision was made to relaunch . The moderation seats next to Whoopi Goldberg were filled with the actress Rosie Perez , the Republican politician Nicolle Wallace and the comedian Rosie O'Donnell . In addition, the entire production team was replaced and they moved to a new studio; however, the hoped-for success did not materialize.
Rosie O'Donnell left the show in February 2015 because of disputes with the production team and the other co-presenters, some of which were played during the show and to focus on her children after her divorce. A different guest presenter took the place of Rosie O'Donnell every week until June 2015, until the actress and singer Raven-Symoné Pearman was introduced as the new co-presenter in early June . At the beginning of July, Rosie Perez announced that she was leaving the show after this season to devote herself to other projects. A few days later, comedian Michelle Collins was introduced as the new co-host. After the season finale (beginning of August) a press release announced that the contract with Nicolle Wallace had not been extended and that the production team would be replaced again.
Season 19
Season 19 started on September 8, 2015. In mid-August it was announced in a press release that the moderation seats next to Whoopi Goldberg with the comedian Joy Behar, the actress Candace Cameron , the journalist Paula Faris, the comedian Michelle Collins and the actress and singer Raven- Symoné Pearman to be re-cast.

Raven-Symoné Pearman announced at the beginning of the season that he would leave the show to devote himself to a new project. At the end of 2016, Candace Cameron-Bure also left the show so that she can devote herself to her new project Fuller House .
