The second season of the American science fiction - television series Star Trek - The Next Generation was erstausgestrahlt in the US starting on November 19, 1988, in Germany on April 13th 1991st

Emergence

In the second season, Gates McFadden aka ship doctor Dr. Beverly Crusher by Diana Muldaur aka Dr. Catherine replaced Pulaski before McFadden returned after contract negotiations for the third season. The figure of Dr. Pulaski remained unpopular with many Star Trek fans. Also met Whoopi Goldberg at his own request as wise bartender Guinan of Bordbar Ten Forward (dt. Ten Forward ), which had also been recreated for the second season, the Enterprise crew added. Up until her last appearance in Suspicions (season 6, episode 22), Goldberg was listed in the opening credits as a "special guest star". Worf, played by Michael Dorn , took over the position of head of security on board. Geordi Laforge ( LeVar Burton ) has been named chief engineer. Both characters therefore wore yellow instead of red uniforms from now on. Colm Meaney aka 'Miles O'Brien', who appeared in only two episodes during the first season, was established as the transporter boss for the rest of the series from the first episode of the second season.

With the beginning of the second season there were some changes in the team of scriptwriters. Maurice Hurley, left the team at the end of the season, even though he was only named chief writer at the beginning. Tracy Tormé and David Gerrold resigned after differences with Gene Roddenberry ; Leonard Mlodinow and Scott Rubenstein also said goodbye. On the other hand, Hans Beimler and Melinda Snodgrass were added to the team of authors. The latter was responsible for content-rich and popular episodes such as Who Owns Data? . As a result of the time jump with Q , the Borg were established for the first time as an almost invincible opponent of the Enterprise crew.

In 1988 the American Screenwriters Union went on strike . Therefore, the season was shortened from 26 to 22 episodes. In addition, some old scripts created for the once discarded Star Trek series Star Trek: Phase Two were used, for example for the first episode of the season. For this reason and for financial reasons, the last episode of the season was a series of film clips from previous episodes designed as dream sequences. It is considered one of the least successful episodes in the entire series. This technique, known as clip show , never had to be used again in the entire series.
