production

In 2017, Star Trek: Discovery started again after a twelve-year break, a Star Trek television series. After the end of the first season, Alex Kurtzman , who was instrumental in developing the series, signed a five-year contract with CBS , which made him primarily responsible for the Star Trek franchise. In June 2018, Kurtzman announced that several more series were planned, including an animated one. In October 2018, it was announced that the series would be called Star Trek: Lower Decks and that it would be developed by Mike McMahan , who was previously a screenwriter for Rick and Morty . In addition, it was announced that it should be a pure comedy series. The video-on-demand platform CBS All Access ordered two seasons. On July 20, 2019, the first images of lower decks and the names of the main characters and their speakers were released at San Diego Comic Con . In early August 2019, McMahan made it clear that the series' plot would definitely be part of the Star Trek canon .

publication

On July 1, 2020, it was announced that the first ten-episode season would air on CBS All Access on August 6, 2020 . The individual episodes appear on a weekly basis. A later publication was originally planned. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the production schedules of all current Star Trek series have been mixed up and much work for lower decks has been brought forward by two months. According to Mike McMahan, this is also the reason the series is delayed outside of North America.

A first trailer for the series was published on July 12, 2020 and the first episode titles on July 23, 2020. The opening scene of the first episode was also released on the same day.
