Rick and Morty is an American animated series directed by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon . The series premiered in 2013 on the cable broadcaster Adult Swim , and was broadcast in Germany on the TNT Serie a year later . The television series follows the cynical but ingenious scientist Rick and his simple-minded grandson Morty on adventures into other dimensions. In the original, the voices of the two main roles are spoken by Roiland , other speakers are Chris Parnell , Spencer Grammer and Sarah Chalke .

The series was received extremely positively by critics and viewers. For example, with a weighted average rating of 9.2 out of 10 stars in the IMDb film database, it occupies the top position both in the animation series and in the science fiction series.

By October 2017, the series had aired three seasons with 31 episodes. In May 2018, Adult Swim renewed Rick and Morty for 70 more episodes. The fourth season started in November 2019.

Rick Sanchez is an elderly eccentric scientist and alcoholic who recently started living with his daughter Beth Smith's family. He spends most of his time with his grandson Morty on dangerous and unusual adventures across the cosmos and in parallel worlds . The Smith family consists of parents Beth and Jerry, 17-year-old Summer, and 14-year-old Morty. The simple and insecure Jerry sees in Rick a bad influence for Morty, so it often comes to a conflict in the already fragile marriage to Beth, who is dissatisfied with her current life situation.

Rick Sanchez

Rick Sanchez is a brilliant scientist. He is the father of Beth and therefore the grandfather of Summer and Morty. His wife died, after which he became an alcoholic and left his daughter Beth behind. He only returned to his daughter's family shortly before the series began. Rick is often drunk and acts very quickly as a result. Although he thinks Morty is very stupid and often tells him so openly, you can tell that he likes him. With the help of his "portal gun" he can travel through different realities and fly through the galaxies with his spaceship - which looks like a classic UFO, but was built from garbage according to the character type. He knows a lot about the other worlds and has some friends, but also enemies everywhere in all kinds of life forms. He often doesn't seem to have a conscience, but when it comes to his family and especially Morty, he can be very worried and caring, but vehemently denies this when asked.

Morty Smith

Morty is the 14 year old son of Beth and Jerry, the brother of Summer and the grandson of Rick. He often takes him on adventures that take him emotionally and disturb him. Morty isn't particularly smart and acts as a cover for Rick as Morty's simple brain waves overshadow Ricks. Morty is in love with Jessica from his school, but often tries to get together or have intimate relationships with other girls.

Summer Smith

Summer is Morty's 17-year-old sister. Beth was unintentionally pregnant with her, which ultimately led to her and Jerry staying together. She's the typical teenager and tries to be popular as possible. She is open-minded and open to other creatures, even the devil.

Jerry Smith

Jerry is Beth's husband and the father of Summer and Morty. He wants attention and recognition. Rick likes to annoy him and thinks he is a nuisance, which is why a rich Rick has built a kind of "Jerry Hostel" from another reality where he can drop him off. Jerry has a few preferences that Beth doesn't really love. He's not doing Beth's job the way his wife would like. Professionally, he works in the advertising industry, but mostly without success. In the process he has to take a job with the galactic government, which he loses again when it withdraws from Earth.

Beth Smith

Beth is Rick's daughter. She is still disappointed in her father, but mostly does not show it and behaves normally to Rick. Beth is an equine surgeon, but it is very important that it is as demanding as human surgery . Little by little, however, she finds Jerry more annoying and has often considered leaving him. In the third season, she is in divorce with Jerry.

Supporting characters

Jessica

Jessica is a student from Morty's school. Morty is in love with her and tries to talk to her and to get together with her, which he succeeds sometimes more, sometimes less. Jessica is not averse to Morty, but is also not very interested in him. She's pretty popular in school.

Bird man

Bird Man is a friend of Rick, who is part human and part eagle. He seems very emotionless. At Rick and Summer's party, he meets Tammy, a teenager from Summers' school, with whom he is from now on and flies to his home town with her. He later marries her too. However, she is a spy and was only married to him for camouflage.

Mr. Goldenfold

Mr. Goldenfold is Morty's math teacher. He suffers from coprophagia .

The Council of the Ricks

The Council of Ricks is an association of several Ricks from different realities who have come together. You are in the Ricks Citadel, where many Ricks and Mortys live.

When Dan Harmon was fired from the television series community in 2012 , Adult Swim approached him about producing an animated series. Unfamiliar with animated series production, Harmon turned to Justin Roiland, whom he knew from his Channel 101 film festival . Together they developed the series based on the animated short film "The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti," which Roiland had written for Channel 101. This rather vulgar short film was based on the two main characters of Back to the Future .

During the first season there were several guest appearances by various actors and voice actors, including Werner Herzog , John Oliver , Alfred Molina , Claudia Black , David Cross , Dana Carvey , Virginia Hey and Tom Kenny . Dan Harmon, the show's co-creator, also has a few minor guest roles.

The first season of the series was released in the US from December 2, 2013 to April 14, 2014 on Adult Swim. In Germany, the first season was broadcast from November 29, 2014 to February 7, 2015. The series has been dubbed in several languages, including Russian and Spanish. German-speaking dubbing voices are u. a. Kai Taschner (Rick Sanchez), Tim Schwarzmaier (Morty Smith), Claus-Peter Damitz (Jerry Smith), Ilena Gwisdalla (Summer Smith) and Elisabeth Günther (Beth Smith).

The second season started in the US on July 26, 2015. The first two episodes were leaked a month before the official release . The show's creator, Justin Roiland, stated in a comment on reddit that he didn't know who was to blame for the illegal publication, but later jokingly blamed then-US President Barack Obama . In Germany, the second season was shown on TNT Serie from February 4th to 17th, 2016. Between July 26, 2017 and October 4, 2017, TNT Comedy broadcast the third season as a German premiere. The third season has been broadcast on Comedy Central as a free TV premiere since April 1, 2019 , after DMAX first broadcast the first two seasons on free TV from November 12, 2016 to March 30, 2017.

The fourth season started in the USA on November 10, 2019 and ended on May 31, 2020. In Germany, TNT Comedy has been broadcasting the fourth season since January 15, 2020, while on Netflix the first half of the season has been broadcasting since June 15, 2020 is available.

The first season episodes were initially released on the Adult Swim website without regional bans. The first six episodes were also shown free of charge on YouTube for a short period of time. The episode Rixty Minutes was posted in 109 15-second videos on Instagram prior to airing on March 13, 2014.

On Tuesday, September 6, 2016, the series was broadcast on the German Internet broadcaster Rocket Beans TV at 9:40 p.m. For the time being, only the first episode could be seen in German synchronization on the Rocketbeans YouTube livestream. The episode was repeated on Rocket Beans TV on September 20 at 9:40 pm, but this time in the original English version.

The television series Rick and Morty was nominated for Best General Audience Animated TV / Broadcast Production at the 2015 Annie Awards . At the Behind the Voice Actors Awards, speakers Chris Parnell and Sarah Chalke were nominated for their work on the series. The series was well received by critics. According to Rotten Tomatoes , all five reviews collected describe the series positively. The Metacritic site also confirms this. As an average rating, a Metascore of 85/100 is determined from eight reviews . The viewers showed a similar picture: over 290,000 users of the Internet Movie Database gave the series an average of 9.3 out of 10 stars.

Adaptations

comics

The Rick & Morty comic series is written by Zac Gorman and illustrated by CJ Cannon and first appeared on April 1, 2015. Since the comic series follows a different timeline than the series, it does not overlap with the main plot. In addition, a crossover comic with Dungeons and Dragons was published , whose authors include Patrick Rothfuss .

Video games

An Adobe Flash point-and-click adventure for the series was first released in 2014 and published on the Adult Swim website. In December, Rick and Morty: Jerry's Game for Android and iOS , which is about making balloons pop, was released. On January 13, 2016, the Pokémon parody Pocket Mortys was released for iOS and Android. Here the player has to catch "wild" Mortys and let them fight for them. On April 20, 2017, the virtual reality game Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality was released for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift . Games and merchandising

Several games and merchandising articles have been released for the series. On May 11, 2017, the Rickmobile in Atlanta , a mobile shop that specializes in Rick and Morty items, launched. The game Total Rickall known from episode 15 was implemented as a strategic card game by Cryptozoic Entertainment and released on June 22, 2016. On August 3, 2016, the company also released the Mr. Meeseeks' Funbox , which combines elements of the game of dice with truth or dare and the character of Mr. Meeseeks known from the series. On July 12, 2017, the company also released Anatomy Park - The Game , which is a strategy game based on the episode of the same name.
