Patrick Rothfuss (* 6. June 1973 in Madison , Wisconsin , USA ) is an American fantasy - writer .

Life

In 1991 Patrick Rothfuss began his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, from which he graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts. He continued his studies at Washington State University and graduated with a Master of Arts. He returned to Stevens Point two years later and has taught English at the University of Wisconsin ever since. In March 2007 he published his first book, The Name of the Wind , which in the same year won several awards as best book of the year and, among other things, the Quill Award . When presenting the German translation Der Name des Windes , published in 2008, Denis Scheck rated the book as “the most convincing fantasy since Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings in his show Fresh off the press .

According to his website, he became an avid reader because of the often bad weather and the lack of a cable TV. His many years of study were characterized by changing priorities, which should first enable him to become a chemical engineer and later a career in clinical psychology . Most recently, his study goal was officially “unclear”, and he simply studied everything that interested him. During this time he took on a lot of odd jobs. He began writing the College Survival Guide column for the campus newspaper , which he continues to this day, while also starting work on a very long fantasy novel entitled The Song of Flame and Thunder . After completing the novel, he submitted it to several publishers without success, but with an excerpt from it ( The Road to Levinshir ) he won the Writers of the Future 2002 competition in the 2nd quarter, which is highly regarded among science fiction authors . It was only after a conversation with Kevin J. Anderson in an author's workshop that he secured a contract with the literary agent Matt Bialer, who finally managed to sell the novel to the publisher DAW Books - but now designed as a trilogy and under the new title The Kingkiller Chronicle , of which The Name of the Wind forms the first part.

Since June 2015 Rothfuss has been running a podcast called Unattended Consequences together with Max Temkin.

The Worldbuilders charity he founded in 2008 collects donations for Heifer International.
