occupation

The Tower is a two-part German television film based on the novel of the same name by Uwe Tellkamp , which was first broadcast on October 3rd and 4th 2012 in Das Erste .

action

The film essentially reproduces the plot of the novel , which focuses on the story of the Hoffmann family in the milieu of Dresden's educated bourgeoisie from 1982 to 1989.

Some details of the plot of the novel have been left out in the film, such as the affair of the father Richard Hoffmann with Christian's girlfriend Reina, instead the exposure of the earlier Stasi involvement as the trigger of the rupture between father and son is staged. For cinematic reasons, Meno Rohde's diary entries were also completely dispensed with.

Filming

The shooting took place from September to December 2011 in addition to Dresden and its immediate surroundings (for example Schloss Cotta ) and Berlin in Görlitz and Bad Düben . The Christmas vespers in the first part and the wedding scenes in the second part were shot in and around the church in Großröhrsdorf , the film scenes of the demonstrations at Dresden Central Station in Pilsen, Czech Republic .

"Der Turm" was produced by the Babelsberg production company teamWorx around producer Nico Hofmann , a subsidiary of UFA, also based in Potsdam-Babelsberg .

reception

“The constellation is clear after a good twenty minutes. In the process, the viewer experiences how the protagonists can see, recognize their situation and draw conclusions. This is a tried and tested dramaturgical model, it was particularly popular when people were still looking for 'socialist realism'. Thanks to the director Christian Schwochow, who became known with Novemberkind, that it doesn't get boring despite the predictability. He knows how to stage the unspoken. "

- Jens Bisky : Süddeutsche Zeitung

“The film, which sometimes seems too rushed due to its many facets, but basically reproduces the dynamics of the time, hardly leaves a breather. 'The Tower' draws its atmosphere from interpersonal relationships, from which the tension arises. "

- Katrin Rönicke and Marco Herack : FAZ

Uwe Tellkamp praises the film adaptation of his novel: The film is largely free of clichés. The scriptwriter and director would have been able to "free themselves from the seductions of the material, which are called: black and white painting, cliché formation, impression club". A love for historical detail can also be seen in the film. B. in a scene Meno Rohde can be seen in front of a GDR edition of the works of E. T. A. Hoffmann . Tellkamp also feels that the film confirms his view of the downfall of the GDR: the author Tellkamp could be “labeled an idiot and clueless, a spoiled citizen boy. […] But a film staff of maybe 400 people, many of them East Germans? You can't say this to them. "
