action

The focus is on the young investment banker Jana Liekam ( Paula Beer ), who works as a financial structurer at the “Crédit International Financial Group” in Luxembourg . Immediately after her release, thanks to the help of her former boss Leblanc ( Désirée Nosbusch ), she switched to “Deutsche Global Invest” (DGI) in Frankfurt .

For this recommendation Leblanc later requests inside information about her new employer. Jana finds out that the DGI has manipulated its balance sheet . The DGI has sold a failed financial product to a secret subsidiary , i.e. to itself.

Jana continues her career and the financing of the Leipzig 2025 urban development project will be transferred to her. She finds out that Crédit International and Deutsche Global want to merge and Leblanc is interested in the head of investment banking.

She uses her knowledge of balance sheet manipulation to her advantage and throws DGI into a crisis through a leak . In a state rescue operation, the two investment banks are forcibly merged . Jana earns several million from it through insider trading . Together with two colleagues from her Leipzig project team, she decides to continue working for the bank and to use her knowledge of the executives for their careers.

Reviews

“One of the great strengths of 'Bad Banks' is that the screenwriter Oliver Kienle saves us explanatory dialogues that one normally encounters on public television. We move among characters who, in the English investment language, sell highly complex financial products under extreme pressure; and with the exception of one scene in which an attempt to make it clear what exactly they are doing is more parodied than undertaken - Luc (Marc Limpach), banker condemned to social hours in a crisis of meaning, writes homeless people in the soup kitchen all for yourself. "

“The thriller element works very well in the pilot episode. For the short time that the series makers only have to establish their world, they pull us in in record time. They even manage the seldom achieved level of giving even viewers who do not understand anything about the stock market the feeling of checking the background of the respective story without overwhelming us and leaving us alone. If the main character can meet the high expectations in the long run, we have a very worth seeing series on hand. "
