Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG for Windows and Mac OS . Like its predecessor, Guild Wars , it was developed by ArenaNet and published for the first time by publisher NCsoft on August 28, 2012.

ArenaNet had the vision behind Guild Wars 2 to break with the conventions then existing in the gaming segment and to question them. Therefore, as with the predecessor, no monthly fees were charged. The base game has been free since August 30, 2015, with some restrictions. After purchase, the game can be played indefinitely, including all expansions that have been released to date and without additional fees. The income is generated exclusively through the units sold and the item shop integrated in the game .

The action in Guild Wars 2 is laid out 250 years after the first part. During this time, a lot has changed for the inhabitants of the fictional continent of Tyria. They have all gone through changes and are now facing different new problems and dangers. The shamans no longer rule the charr, the asura have colonized the surface, the norn have been driven from their homeland, the humans have lost large areas and the sylvari awakened from the blossoms of the pale tree.

In addition, Tyria is being attacked by six ancient, mysterious Elder Dragons . This forces the five great peoples to forget their long-cherished differences and forge alliances in order to hold their own against the common threat.

    Gameplay

    cards

The landscapes of Tyria are divided into many different sized maps that are connected by portals. The so-called megaserver system dynamically distributes the number of players across multiple copies of the same cards if the maximum number of players on a card has been reached. As far as possible, groups such as formed teams, guilds or linguistic boundaries are taken into account in the division.

In order not to let more experienced characters roam through low-level areas, another system has been built in, which reduces the level and values of the players to the level of the respective areas. This is to keep the gaming experience exciting everywhere.

    tasks

In Guild Wars 2 there are no " quests " in the classic sense. The tasks that need to be done with the various NPCs are instead simply displayed as soon as you come within their range. Usually there are several possible solutions, between which you can choose or switch back and forth in order to fill the task bar. Even on the most difficult maps there are no such tasks at all. The whole thing there is made up of dynamic events.

    Dynamic events

This means various events that are constantly taking place in the entire game world. For example, a supply caravan pulls across enemy territory, and it is important to protect it so that it is not knocked down. Elsewhere, a human base is being attacked by enemy centaurs. Players can now help defend. If they don't, the centaurs take the base and it must be recaptured later in order to have its services such as merchants or fast travel points available again. The type of events is diverse, their difficulty is scaled according to the number of participants and when they are completed everyone receives a reward depending on how much they were involved.

    Dungeons

In addition to the open world, Guild Wars 2 also features dungeons , also known as dungeons . For this purpose, a group of five is formed in advance with other players, who then set off together to one of the eight locations. These are gradually released as the level rises. Each of the dungeons has several modes. First you start with the story mode, which is still simple . In it you meet different NPC heroes who you support in their adventure. The story told continues in the various dungeons one after the other. If the story mode is done, the exploration mode is activated . Now with increased difficulty, you choose one of at least three paths that determine the path and the events that you experience.

In addition to the "classic" dungeons, there is a ninth, special dungeon: the Fractals of the Mists. Here the players can choose one of several fractals per run. The fractals represent individual fragments of historical events from Tyria. You can learn more about the history of the continent and the supply of possible fractals is occasionally supplemented. In addition, the difficulty in this dungeon increases from visit to visit, as one is increasingly afflicted with the condition of agony . This causes damage over and over again and reduces the effectiveness of healing. You can also select the difficulty levels that you have already successfully completed.

Since HoT there is also the possibility for advanced players to join a raid in a group of 10. There are currently 7 raids in total, each of which is subdivided into 3 levels and each is represented exclusively by strong end bosses, each of which requires clever strategies from a well-organized group.

    Player character

    Combat system

No class in Guild Wars 2 is assigned a special role based on the common damage / healer / tank principle. An explicit healer class was completely dispensed with. All orientations are possible, depending on the taste of the player, to take on different roles. A change during the fight is also free. The experience required to reach the maximum level of 80 does not rise steeply, but only increases slightly from level to level.

Some abilities of different classes can react with each other and thus trigger combos that have special effects. For example, arrows whose trajectory is through a wall of flame become arrows on fire. Furthermore, there is the possibility to perform evasive roles at the expense of perseverance in order to avoid one or the other enemy attack with a little skill. If your own life points drop to zero, the character is not immediately dead, but first goes down weakened in the so-called battered mode . Here you get four special skills corresponding to the class played, such as: B. throwing around yourself with dirt, stones or lightning. If you manage to strike down an opponent in this mode, you get up again and can continue fighting normally.

In addition, every character, regardless of class, is able to revive defeated players or help up those who are ailing. All of this makes combat in Guild Wars 2 very dynamic. It helps to be flexible, to move around and to watch your opponent instead of just staring at the life bar and skills bar.

    people

The player can choose between five different races when creating his character. The people who have lost their greatness from the old days and are now fighting for their place in the world. The Charr are militarily organized humanoid cats that have long been at war with humans. Sylvari are elven- like plant creatures and a relatively young race that emerged from the flowers of the Pale Tree through which they are linked in a shared dream. The gnomish asura are highly intelligent, mystical scientists and the most technologically advanced people. The fifth race is the norn. They are giant Nordic warriors whose purpose in life is to become legend.

    Classes

It is then possible to choose one of nine character classes. Engineers work with all kinds of equipment such as grenades, bombs, tool belts and stationable weapon turrets. The necromancers , versed in the dark realms of magic, curse their opponents, summon undead servants and drain life force. Thieves act with cunning and camouflage, hide from their target and attack quickly from the shadows. Elementalists channel fire, water, air and earth to turn the forces of nature against their enemy. Warriors use a wide variety of weapons and their power to convince on the battlefield. Rangers make use of their knowledge of nature and go into battle with various animal companions. Mesmer are magicians who play with the perception of their opponents through deception and illusion. The chivalrous-looking, virtuous guardians are fighters who also make use of magic. With the first expansion, Heart of Thorns, the revenants were added. You channel the magic and power of past legends to harness their abilities.

    Player versus Player (PvP)

    Structured PvP (sPvP)

All players are raised to the maximum level here and are provided with all skills and equipment. This is to ensure that no one has an advantage due to expensive equipment. All characters should be equal, so that it depends primarily on the playing skills of the individual. On some of the different maps, in addition to the actual fight against the players, there are also secondary objectives such as tribocks, destructible objects or huge dragons, which can bomb parts of the map and thus change the environment and even kill players.

The starting point of the sPvP is a lobby called the "Heart of the Fog". Here players can improve their skills on practice opponents while waiting for a match. These opponents each specialize in an area of PvP, such as dodging. The actual matches are divided into matches with and without ranking. In both modes, two 5-player teams meet and have to capture and hold card-dependent objects. Unrated games are all about testing new builds and refining game strategies. In ranked games, players can place themselves in leagues within a season and receive extra rewards. The decisive factor here is the skill rating of the players, which changes after each match.

    World against world (WvW)

In this mode, three worlds (servers) compete against each other on four large maps and fight there for a week for supremacy over various resources, fortresses and camps. Here it is important to organize yourself and act tactically wisely. The position on the cards is queried at regular intervals, evaluated at the end and based on this, new opponents are finally assigned. The character retains his equipment and skills from PvE , but is raised to the maximum level. Experience and loot from opponents are also gained in this area. So it is a hybrid of PvP and PvE.

    action

    Books about the game

To give an idea of what happened in the 250 years between the first Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 , three books were published by Panini Verlag . In order of publication, these are The Spirits of Ascalon , The Rule of Dragons, and The Sea of Sorrows . The chronological order is exactly the opposite.

    History of the base game

The exact plot that every single character goes through in the game always depends on decisions that you have to make as a player. The foundations of the story are laid when the character is created. Starting with the choice of the breed and the possibility to determine some aspects of his biography. The question can be, for example, whether you grew up on the street or in a noble house, which changes the entry-level missions. Also in the further course of the game you are regularly presented with options that affect the further course of the story.

    The beginning

In the personal story, the character must first grapple with the difficulties that burden the individual races. The Charr are threatened by the Flame Legion that once ruled them. The asura are troubled by the Inquest , which places their research above all morals. Among the norn, it is the sons of Svanir who want to spread the corruption of the ancient dragon Jormag. The humans are at war with the centaurs and the sylvari must put the nightmare court in its place, which wants to poison the common dream with malicious thoughts.

    The medals

After making a name for yourself and clearing up some personal matters, you will be recruited by one of the Tyrian orders. The researchers of Durmand Abbey , the agents of the Order of Rumors or the fighters of the vigilant , all three of whom are trying in their own way to take action against the ancient dragon Zhaitan and his armies of undead. It is now a matter of completing various missions for the chosen order and searching for possibilities against the enemy.

    The pact

Once you have earned the respect of the respective organization, the impetus is given to team up with the other orders in order to bundle forces and stand together stronger. The pact is born. Together you develop new technologies and ways of fighting. With the Fort of the Trinity , a common base will be built on the outskirts of Orr , the formerly sunken empire that Zhaitan let rise with him from the sea during his ascent.

    Arah

From the fort you fight your way through the depraved landscapes of Orr, looking for ways to weaken the enemy. The jointly developed technology is tested in combat and information about the old dragon is obtained. Then finally, having arrived in the ruins of the former capital Arah, the final blow against Zhaitan is launched .

    The living world

ArenaNet keeps releasing content updates called the Living World . It tells the story of what happens around Tyria and its inhabitants and changes the game world again and again. Annually recurring festive events are also celebrated. These include the winter day at Christmas time or the festivities of the Mad King on Halloween.

The core of the Living World is a narrative style in episodes and seasons based on the model of large television series . So you build on a larger framework that only becomes fully accessible over time. Since the beginning of season 3, ArenaNet has been maintaining a self-set goal of 2-3 months between releases. It usually includes a new explorable map and the next episode of the ongoing storyline. The episodes can be repeated and no longer contain any temporary content.

    development

    philosophy

Even when developing Guild Wars , it was important to ArenaNet not to orientate itself towards the competition and to simply copy successful concepts. Rather, it was important to get rid of it and be innovative. Even if that meant risking something, you should still find your own way.

When all possibilities for experimentation were exhausted in the first Guild Wars , it was decided at ArenaNet to produce a successor. In Guild Wars 2 , they wanted to do a much more thorough job of cleaning up the prevailing mechanics and, in their own opinion, to bring the MMOs business field back to life with new ideas.

    publication

NCSoft booth at Paris Games Week 2010

The first announcement about the development of Guild Wars 2 was already in 2007. For the year 2009 the publication was initially planned. However, the time was later pushed back more and more. The reason for this was ArenaNet's company policy. A fixed date for the publication was not officially announced until shortly before. A phrase often used by ArenaNet at that time when asked about an appointment was "when it's done". You didn't want to put yourself under pressure to ultimately have to publish an unfinished game.

For the first time, visitors to Gamescom 2010 were able to play a demo of Guild Wars 2 . Closed alpha and beta tests then took place in 2011 . In February 2012, selected press representatives had the opportunity to take part in beta tests and registration for the public beta tests was approved. This remained open for 50 hours until the million mark was reached. Advance sales began in April 2012. Owners of the pre-sale version could take part in occasional beta events and play three days before the official game start.

At the end of June 2012, the release for August 28, 2012 was finally announced. Just two days after the publication, ArenaNet voluntarily stopped selling the digital version it was distributing and stopped delivering to dealers. This was justified with the strong demand and the desire to be able to guarantee the players the best possible gaming experience. After only two weeks, Guild Wars 2 was still able to sell over two million copies worldwide. By January 2013, more than three million units had been sold.

In September 2012, the official support of Mac OS X Lion for Guild Wars 2 was announced and at the same time a beta version of the game client was made available for download.

    Soundtrack

The soundtrack available in the game at the time of release fills a total of four CDs and comes from the composer Jeremy Soule , who is known for his computer and video game music. First released was the song Fear Not This Night, sung by the artist Asja . Ree Soesbee, one of the lead game designers at ArenaNet, wrote the text of the song, which is meant to symbolize the story lived through in the game.

The composer later made an exclusive commitment elsewhere, so that ArenaNet now employs its own staff for compositions. In this way, the music can always be written specifically for the new scenery. Parts of the newer soundtrack were recorded in Germany by the orchestra of the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Konzerthaus in Berlin. ArenaNet has its own SoundCloud channel on which the compositions are made available.

    Extensions

    Heart of Thorns

On October 23, 2015, the first expansion for the game, entitled Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns , was released. It is a spiritual legacy of Guild Wars Utopia , an expansion planned for its predecessor, but which has been discarded in favor of Guild Wars 2 . With Heart of Thorns , the game world is expanded to include the Maguuma jungle, which also brings some innovations to the character classes, new game elements and other functions.

    Maguuma jungle

The maps that are added with the expansion are divided into several levels from the roots to the treetops. The event system of the individual areas is based on a special map-wide mechanism, such as B. a consecutive day-night cycle 'subjected.

The new play areas are located in Maguuma, a mysterious and little explored jungle. In narrative terms, you are faced with Mordremoth, the second of the six Elder Dragons. He is the master of the Maguuma Jungle and powerful enough that he could simply destroy the Pact fleet on a first attempt at advance. As you learn in Season 2 of the Living World, even the playable race of the sylvari descended from him.

    Advanced character development

    Elite specializations

In preparation for the expansion, ArenaNet has replaced the previous property system with the so-called specializations , which represent a further development of the old system. Since then, points are no longer distributed in the various property lines. These have been converted into specializations, of which, depending on the level, you can simply select up to three completely and modify them with a few selectable properties.

With the appearance of Heart of Thorns , an additional learnable elite specialization was introduced for each character class, which is selected instead of one of the others. These special elite specializations grant the respective class control over a previously unusable weapon, thereby creating new skills and changing or replacing the respective class mechanics.

    The revenant

The Revenant is a new character class that will become available for newly created characters with the release of the expansion. He is a heavily armored fighter who can conjure up legends of the past in order to gain their skills. Depending on which of the legends he is currently using, the orientation of this class changes fundamentally.

    Control system

The masteries are a system that is intended to acquire certain skills and knowledge that are required to survive especially in the new areas of the Maguuma Jungle and to be able to uncover its secrets. This includes things like paragliding or the use of jumping mushrooms, which makes otherwise inaccessible areas accessible. However, it also includes learning the foreign languages of the cultures living in the jungle, which is necessary in order to discover their history and secrets.

    New group content

    Guild halls

The options for guild organization are also expanded with the expansion. Rather, the newly introduced guild halls are supposed to be a whole map in the game world that you conquer for your guild from enemy hands. You can then set up decorations there and erect various structures that you can then use for your own tournaments, weapon manufacture or cozy get-togethers.

    Raids

ArenaNet designed the raids for demanding players . This is an instantiated area of the game that is supposed to be particularly demanding in terms of tactics and group dynamics. In Guild Wars 2, the game element better known as Raid is played with a group of 10 players.

    Fortress (PvP)

The PvP is supplemented with the expansion to the fortress mode (English Stronghold ). Two (guild) teams compete against each other in order to take over the opposing position and fight their way up the guild rankings .

    Path of Fire

The second expansion for Guild Wars 2 was released on September 22, 2017. It is called Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire and leads the player into the crystal desert to march against the ruthless god of war Balthasar. In addition to five new large areas and a new raid in the mystical forge, new content also includes new elite specializations for all classes and mounts that can be unlocked via the rulers.
