Guild Wars ( German: Guild Wars ) is an online game that the developers ArenaNet called Competitive Online Roleplaying Game (CORPG). The use of the game is free of charge.

So far, there are three stand-alone campaigns that can be played alone or in combination, as well as an expansion . In spring 2007, ArenaNet announced the successor Guild Wars 2 , which was released on August 28, 2012.

Guild Wars reached high places on the computer game charts. Guild Wars has been sold more than 7 million times since its release , with about half of the purchases in Europe (as of September 1, 2010).

Game flow

All areas are instanced outside areas, so that a group can only be formed in cities and so-called outposts. Instances can be accessed by up to eight team members - in special cases more or only by themselves. In these instances the outer areas of the group talk depending on the composition computerized followers (English Henchmen , of players also NPC or Henchies called), or a mixed group of human and computer-controlled appearance, neutral NPCs (Ally, Quest encoder, merchants, collectors) and opponents on. It is not possible to meet other human players who were not previously in the group in the instances, except in the Vizunahplatz mission of the Factions campaign . This reduces the load on the server noticeably , but it can also lead to a loss of the atmosphere in the game, as not several or thousands of players are in the same area at the same time. The number of monsters in an area is finite: once all have been eliminated, no new ones will spawn . However, the previously killed opponents appear again as soon as you leave the instance and re-enter. By eliminating all opponents in an area ("defeat") in the unlockable difficult mode, the player receives additional gold and experience points. Instantiation cannot attack weaker players ( gankers ) or loot areas ( looters ). If several players play in a group, they share the dropped gold of the opponents, other items are reserved for certain players.

The player can enter an instance in Guild Wars alone, with other players or supported by computer-controlled followers, whereby a hero system has been added since the appearance of Nightfall .

There are no specialized professions like in other MMORPGs . The character can get so-called skill points by further collecting experience points. At the beginning of the game, each character chooses an individual combination of two character classes during a tutorial , whereby the secondary class can be changed during the course of the game if a class changes. The primary and secondary classes offer the character access to a total of 150–200 freely selectable skills as soon as they have been activated or learned. Each class also has four to five of its own attributes that determine the effect of the skills or the damage done with the weapon. Each class has a primary attribute called innate skill , which is only available to the first class. The distribution of attribute points and the composition of skills ( build ) are decisive for the function of the class . In an instance or mission, a character can only use eight self-selected skills. This can include an elite skill. The combination of attribute points, secondary class and skills results in tactical components for the respective instance and for the function of the classes for the group in the game: The agreement before entering an instance is an essential element in Guild Wars, so that the individual participants in the group know which strategy is appropriate due to the group structure, as each class has special functions in combat. For the agreement, an understanding of the classes is necessary in order to play the class as effectively as possible in combat and thus to support the group as best as possible. Therefore, not objects such as weapons, special skills or the character level are decisive for the victory, but the interaction and the combination of the many different skills of the classes, as well as an understanding of the intricacies of the game mechanics.

Character classes

There are ten different classes in Guild Wars , with each character having a main and optionally a secondary class (primary and secondary class). A total of 90 different class combinations are possible in addition to the ten main classes. The primary attribute (see table), the appearance and also the armor class depend exclusively on the selected main class. Nevertheless, all skills of the secondary class can also be used. Since no points can be awarded to the primary attribute of the secondary class, the use of skills of this attribute is rarely useful. Each class has up to 9 attributes, which can be increased from a pool of 200 attribute points in the secondary class up to rank 12 (≙ 97 attribute points) and in the primary class (by using runes) up to rank 16. With around 100 possible skills per class, this results in a large number of possible combinations, which allows a large number of individual characters.

The combination of the classes (e.g. primary warrior and secondary monk) results in different tactical variations. The combination warrior / monk is better suited for close combat than a monk / warrior, since the armor bonus depends on the primary class. Conversely, a warrior / monk is unsuitable as a healer for the whole group due to the missing attribute favor of the gods , the lower energy supply and the poorer energy regeneration, but can heal himself mediocre.

The classes Assassin and Ritualist are only available in the game Factions and the classes Dervish and Paragon can only be selected as primary class in the game Nightfall , but can then be played in all chapters. The other 6 classes are selectable in all Guild Wars parts, whereby the appearance of the characters and the armor differ depending on the chapter.

Guilds

Guilds play an important role in Guild Wars because team play, especially in PvP , is very important. The integrated system allows players to join groups of up to 100 players. In addition to a common day behind the character name, the players also share the guild hall and an individually created cape. The guilds have a hierarchy (leaders, officers and members), which is also reflected in different rights (dissolve guild, promote / demote members, start guild war, etc.). Guild members can also communicate with each other using the chat function in the game in a private channel .
Since Guild Wars Factions it is possible for guilds to enter into an alliance with up to 9 other guilds in order to gain control of a city. An alliance must join either the Luxon or the Kurzick , two rival factions.

If a guild has fought for a sky sigil in the Hall of Heroes , or bought it from a player or dealer, it can use it to acquire one of the many different guild halls. Members and alliance members can meet there and fight guild fights.

Cities

Cities can accommodate up to 250 players. If this number is exceeded, a new city authority (“district”) is opened. In the European region, the cities are divided into seven languages (German, English, French, Italian, Polish, Spanish, Russian). As long as the maximum number in an instance is not reached, the players can freely switch between the instances, even in another language. There is also an international instance where you can meet players from the other five regions. In cities, you can get in contact with other players, for example, to form groups, to do business or to recruit new members for your guild.

Player versus environment

While the PvP characters only have access to the arenas, the role-playing characters have full game access. In addition to the cooperative (main) missions - which tell the story of the game - you can do a variety of quests in order to gain experience and skills or just go on a monster hunt through which you can get items such as weapons, craft materials or runes. By unlocking skills, runes and weapon upgrades through PvE characters, you can use these items on the PvP characters belonging to the account.

Hero system

The Hero System is a feature introduced in Guild Wars: Nightfall . In the course of the game 16 NPCs can be unlocked . There are 10 additional NPCs available in Guild Wars: Eye of the North . Some missions or quests require a specific hero to be able to take on them. The heroes are then equipped with weapons, skills and armor by the player. Each team member in a group can have a maximum of seven heroes up to the maximum group size in the group. These heroes appear in the group window like all other players and followers. The heroes can be controlled during the game by the player who took them with them, which is only possible to a limited extent with henchmen. This control takes place via flags on the compass, which is an essential part of the interface (normal followers can only be controlled together via a flag, the heroes can be moved individually, but they also move automatically if no flag is set on the map). Setting the flag (s) determines where the hero (s) should move. A combat mode can be used to determine whether the hero (s) should behave aggressively, defensively or passively. With a hero control menu, heroes can be controlled in such a way that they e.g. B. use a certain skill next, or skills should not (no longer) be used by the hero. Like the classes of players, heroes consist of a primary class and a freely selectable secondary class, whereby the skills that one has learned with any character of the player can be used by all heroes. The hero's secondary class can be changed at will in cities or outposts. Has a character e.g. For example, if a ranger learns all skills, these are available to all ranger heroes and, as a ranger secondary class, to the heroes of the other characters of the player.

Player versus player

PvP offers the player the opportunity to play directly with a character of the highest level (20) without having to create a character in PvE beforehand. A maximum of 8 players can play in a group, so if there are eight groups in a tournament, no more than 64 players are possible in a fight. Guild Wars allows global PvP combat.

Random arenas

4-on-4 fights are played in random arenas; the groups are put together at random.
In the random arena, the player does not know beforehand what kind of PvP battle he is facing. It is decided at random whether the player has to face a normal PvP fight by simply defeating all members of the opposing group with his group, or whether he has to pass one of the other special combat modes. For example, there is a mode in which the group has to kill a priest in addition to the members of the opposing group who resuscitates the opposing group every 2 minutes as long as he is alive. After 25 wins, the team will be brought back to the outpost.

Rise of the Heroes

Located on the battle archipelago , players gather there and form groups of eight people to compete against each other. You have to go through several arenas with different game modes in a knockout tournament until you reach the hall of heroes . There the winners of the previous arenas compete against each other. The team that wins in the hall of heroes will be challenged again after a short time by up to two teams. In contrast to the other arenas, there is only one instance of the Hall of Heroes. Teams that have already qualified for the Hall of Heroes will be put on hold on a special ticket. For the winners, particularly valuable items are distributed to the group from a chest (for example the sky sigil , which is necessary for the acquisition of a guild hall). You also gain fame points for a victory. When you have collected a lot of fame points, you move up in ranks. From rank 3 you can tell other players your own rank with the help of an emote. The five emotes are a deer (rank 3), a wolf (rank 6), a tiger (rank 9), a phoenix (rank 12) and a dragon (rank 15).

Guild battles

Two guilds of eight players per guild (followers can also be used as long as the group consists of at least two correct players) can compete in guild-versus-guild fights (GvG for short). Guilds can either be challenged individually or fights are automatically assigned via a match-making system. Points for a higher position in the guild world ranking can only be collected through automatic encounters. The fight takes place in the hall of the challenged guild or the guild with the lower rating. The aim of the GvG is to kill the opposing guild master or, after the time limit has expired, to have inflicted more damage on him than the generic team does to its own guild master. Guild battles in which a guild from the top 100 of the ranking has participated can be watched by other players with a time shift.

Alliance struggles

This PvP mode is only playable with Guild Wars: Factions . A group consists of 3 teams of 4 players each, whereby the players of a team can join forces before the start. The teams are then randomly thrown together to form a group. In alliance battles you play for one of the two factions, the Kurzick or the Luxon . In these fights you can win reward points for the respective faction. In addition, the boundary between the Luxon and the Kurzick is influenced by these games.

Code arena

The Codex Arena was recently added to replace the Team Arenas and Hero Battles. The functionality and maps are similar to the Team Arena with the only difference that only randomly selected skills of a class are available. With the update of June 2, 2011, the skills are no longer changed every 8 hours, but daily. Furthermore, each primary class may only be assigned once in a team and you may only use elite skills of your own primary class.

Team arenas

In team arenas, two teams of four could compete in classic deathmatches. In contrast to the random arenas, the groups joined together beforehand, that is, tactical planning was possible with the whole group. The team arena has now been removed from the game and replaced by the code arena along with the hero battles.

Hero fights

The hero fights were a 1-on-1 mode in which you could take 3 heroes with you. This mode was only available for Guild Wars: Nightfall , but players could also include heroes from Guild Wars: Eye of the North . The Hero Battles were later removed from the game and replaced with the Codex Arena along with the team arenas.

Extensions

Summer Update: Furnace of Sorrow

The free update, released on September 7, 2005, adds two regions to Guild Wars and new items that can only be dropped by certain boss monsters. In addition, the game balance has been changed, farming with bots has been made more difficult and changes have been made to the GUI .

Guild Wars - Factions

On April 28, 2006, the second chapter of the Guild Wars saga appeared. It is a standalone game that can be installed and played independently of Guild Wars . It should be just as extensive as the original program and - in addition to a completely new world - contain new weapons , skills for all classes, two (four for Factions players only) character slots, and two new character classes (Assassin and Ritualist).

The PvP system experienced some innovations: All PvP arenas are now centrally located on a battle archipelago , including new training arenas . The guilds can form alliances and compete against each other in the newly designed 12-on-12 Capture the Point . B. Gaining control of a city, including special rewards. In addition, the reward system is being revised. At the beginning there were slight problems with the alliance system, but these could be resolved after a short time.

In the PvE mode, the new tutorial also introduces the player to tactical approaches such as B. the "calling" ( English, here: marking ) explained by attacked monsters. Players can one of the two factions ( ger .: Factions ), the Luxon or Kurzick connect, and thus influence the story arc of the story. In addition, PvE titles (such as the “Grand Master Cartographer” for both the old world Tyria and the new world Cantha) were introduced.

Guild Wars - Nightfall

The third part was released on October 27, 2006 and, like Factions, is an independent game. At E3 2006, the first scenes from the game were shown to the press. The background culture for the game is North Africa and the Orient . At the Games Convention 2006 in Leipzig , some of the content and innovations of the third chapter were presented by the developers and Community Manager Gaile Gray.

On July 18th, the game Guild Wars: Nightfall was officially announced and the two new classes announced. These are the "dervish", a scythe-wielding melee who can hit several opponents at once with his scythe, and the "Paragon", the guardian angel of the Elonians (residents of the continent Elona , where Nightfall plays), one with a protective shield and Speer-armed supporter who reinforces the group with battle chants and songs. From July 28th to July 31st there was a PvP preview weekend where you could play the two new classes. In another event from September 22nd to 25th - this time for PvE - players without a Guild Wars account could also take part and get to know the new continent.

Eye of the North

The expansion was released on August 31, 2007. It completes the story of Guild Wars and requires at least one of the three campaigns as a prerequisite. The additional areas are tailored for level 20 characters. If the areas are entered with characters of lower level, the game adjusts their attributes to this difficulty. There you fight with allies from the norn, asura, dwarves and the Ebon vanguard. The game takes place in the northern and southern parts of the Tyria continent of the Prophecies campaign.

Eye of the North is an important link between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2.

Bonus Mission Pack

The Guild Wars Bonus Missions Pack is an expansion of Guild Wars and was released on November 30, 2007. It was originally only available to those who spent 26.00 euros (US $ 29.00) on the Guild Wars Store or PlayNC between July 5, 2007 and October 31, 2007. Since January 28, 2008, it has been available for 8.99 euros in the Guild Wars store or in selected online shops (e.g. 4u2play.de). You will not receive a physical item, just a code via email. With this one could relive four stories of important ancestors.

Guild Wars Beyond

Since the beginning of 2010, smaller free expansions have been released to tell the story between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. In the in-game store, players can optionally buy matching costumes, a special type of armor.

Guild Wars Beyond will be divided into several parts, which will be released gradually. But even the individual parts are not published as a whole, but in small sections. Parts published or announced so far are:

  • War in Kryta (published in several parts between April 2nd and July 9th, 2010): The people of Kryta rebel against their occupiers from the White Mantle and their gods, the Mursaat. The players support the Krytans as well as the followers of the Shining Blade in their civil war and after the final battle get the possibility to receive new weapons, which were specially designed for the war in War in Kryta. Stronger opponents will be found in Kryta during the war, and players can take part in bounty hunts for leading White Mantle members as well as five new missions.
  • Heart of the North (published in two parts on November 18 and December 16, 2010): In the final battle of the war in Kryta, Lieutenant Thackeray, the ancestor of one of the main human characters in Guild Wars 2, is lost. As part of the Heart of the North campaign, which can therefore only be played in Kryta after the war is over, the player plays what happened in four missions. At the end there is the wedding of the found Lieutenant Thackeray and Gwen, an important person from the parts Prophecies and Eye of the North.
  • Cantha - Winds of Change is the third installment in the Guild Wars Beyond series. It is about the events in Cantha, which revolves around the Ministry of Purity and the cleansing of the afflicted. At the beginning of the game, the player supports the Ministry of Purity in the form of Zei Ri to free some areas in Cantha from the infection of the infected. This part is only available to players who have completed the Factions storyline. Winds Of Change was released on July 8, 2011.

DirectSong

Guild Wars is the first game to offer the DirectSong expansion. This allows you to purchase music on the DirectSong website, which - if copied to the game folder - is then played in special regions in addition to the normal soundtrack .

developer

The in Seattle -based game studio ArenaNet was founded by former Blizzard 'employees Mike O'Brien , Pat Wyatt and Jeff Strain founded. Games like Warcraft , Diablo , StarCraft and sequels, as well as the online platform Battle.net, go to their accounts .

ArenaNet is a subsidiary of the South Korean publisher NCsoft .

Graphics engine

Guild Wars uses a proprietary DirectX -9 engine (prior to March 23, 2006 DirectX-8), which is characterized by low loading times and hardware requirements . Features include particle effects , water reflections and shadows calculated in real time . There is also a soft focus . A mixture of elevation grids for landscape representation and graphic primitives for houses etc. is used for the surroundings. Textures have a gradable gloss, and sprites are mainly used for landscapes . Since March 23, 2006, the game has been able to use the previous DirectX -8 engine with the start parameter ("-dx8").

Streaming technology

Guild Wars has a streaming technology that is unique in the MMORPG genre . So-called intelligent streams only update the part of the game that you are currently playing ( i.e. city, area, instance ). In contrast to conventional games (such as World of Warcraft ), there is no need to download a complete patch . This procedure is used both when loading the areas and while playing in the background.

Even when buying the game over the Internet , you only need the 118 KB client to begin with . When the game is started for the first time, only the required data is downloaded. You can also download all data directly by using the "-image" parameter when calling the program. This takes some time, but saves longer loading times later.

Online shop

Since July 28, 2006, players have been able to enter an online shop after logging in. The things bought there are added directly to the account, so you don't get any data carriers, manuals or the like when buying a product. All campaigns, additional character slots and other upgrades can be purchased. Furthermore, equipment of a cosmetic type is to be acquired, which is expanded at regular intervals.

Novels

In 2010 the novel Guild Wars: The Ghosts of Ascalon by Matt Forbeck and Jeff Grubb was published in German. The plot of the novel takes place 250 years after the story of Guild Wars and forms the transition to the second part of the online game. The second volume, Guild Wars: The Rule of Dragons , written by J. Robert King and Tobias Toneguzzo , was published in German in April 2011. The third volume was published in German in July 2013 under the title Guild Wars: The Sea of Sorrows . It was written by Ree Soesbee and tells the story of how Löwenstein went down and was rebuilt. All three novels were published by Panini Verlag .
