Jeremy Soule
Jeremy Soule (born December 19, 1975 in Keokuk , Iowa ) is an American composer , primarily in the field of video game soundtracks.
biography
While in high school, Soule developed a love for video game and computer music. It so happened that after graduating from high school, he made a demo tape showing his understanding of video game music. He sent this to the big game manufacturers LucasArts and Square . The latter promptly signed him for Secret of Evermore . The result was a mix of soft orchestral music and background noise, which is atypical for video game soundtracks. In his later soundtracks he oriented himself more towards classical-romantic than electronic music, albeit often rhythm-heavy or with folkloric accents (Prey). Occasionally Soule also uses synthesizers (Unreal II), but his music usually remains orchestral.
When Ron Gilbert (a former LucasArts employee) founded his own company, Humongous Entertainment, Soule moved from Square to this company to create the soundtracks for the children's adventure series Töff-Töff (English: Putt-Putt ) and Pajama Sam (English: Pajama Sam ) to write. When Chris Taylor met Soule, he hired him to write the soundtracks for his major projects, Total Annihilation and Dungeon Siege . In between these two projects, Soule started his own company Artistry Entertainment to work as a freelance composer.
Since then, Artistry Entertainment has grown and Soule has received orders for successful blockbuster games such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic , The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and the Harry Potter video game series. These projects helped Soule become one of the most sought-after composers in the video game soundtrack industry (alongside Nobuo Uematsu and Kōji Kondō ).
Soule is also a remixer on OverClocked ReMix. His remix of the Final Fantasy VI song “Terra's Theme”, Squaresoft Variation, impressively demonstrates his orchestration skills.
Soule is also the initiator of the DirectSong game interface, which enables new music to be added to games and played in addition to the existing soundtrack.
For the soundtrack of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind , he was nominated for "Game Soundtrack of the Year" by Game Industry News. Four of his pieces received the 2002 Interactive Achievement Award from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences . Morrowind was performed as part of the Symphonic Game Music Concert under Andy Brick on August 17, 2005 by the FILMharmonic Orchestra Prague in the Gewandhaus Leipzig and on a world tour by Play! A Video Game Symphony from 2006. In 2006, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion won the MTV Video Music Award in the “Best Video Game Score” category. Project leader Todd Howard hired Jeremy Soule again to write the soundtrack for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim .
