Impossible Creatures

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Impossible Creatures is a real-time strategy game for Windows from Relic Entertainment . It takes up the topic of genetic manipulation . The game breaks ethical boundaries and simulates everything that is feasible, which is why animals fight directly from the genetics laboratory in the game. It was released by Microsoft in 2003 .

action

1937 on a small chain of islands in the South Pacific. With the help of righteous and mad scientists like Dr. Ganglion, the wealthy and paranoid industrialist Upton Julius works to create an invincible army from genetically modified animals. On the islands isolated from the outside world, his accomplices collect gene samples from the local animal world and use a new technology to combine two specimens to form a new, monstrous creature. In the single player campaign, the adventurer and war correspondent Rex Chance searches for his father, who worked for Upton Julius, and ends up on the island. The brilliant scientist Lucy Willing saves him from two mutations at the last second and together they take on the search for Rex's father and the fight against Upton Julius and his minions.

Equipped with a special rifle, Rex collects gene samples from the local fauna, while Lucy takes care of the procurement of the two necessary resources, coal and electricity, and the construction of the scientific station. Then the cloning is on. By mixing two different gene samples in the so-called “Army Builder”, a new creature is created that combines the special features of both animals. Different combinations of body parts shift the focus with regard to attack, defense and other values or use special skills. If the PC game geneticist crosses a porcupine with a crocodile and takes the back of the porcupine and the head and body of the crocodile, the result is a creature with good melee values and the special ability to shoot quills. 30,000 theoretically possible combinations make it possible to put together very individual armies that look rather bizarre. In multiplayer mode, two to six opponents lead their armies of nine self-designed creature types on a total of 22 maps, alone or in teams against each other.

resonance

The "Creature Combiner", with which thousands of different combinations of different animals can be simulated, hardly plays a role in the game itself. It is only used for the one-time creation of "animal armies". There is a fan community that has developed new mods for the game. One of the mods allows for example to create more than 75 "creatures".

Play testers complained that the game was kept very simple and child-friendly in many respects, which means that it is generally not seen as challenging by older and more experienced strategy players. In addition, the graphic display is kept relatively simple. In addition, the lack of long-term motivation was often criticized when it came to creating the creatures, since further experimentation is not worthwhile once you have built a good army.
