The Last Witness is a crime series that was broadcast by the Second German Television (ZDF) between 1998 and 2007.
It is not about one or two detective officers, as usual, but about a forensic doctor, Dr. Robert Kolmaar, played by Ulrich Mühe . Constant companions of the episodes set in Berlin are his colleague Dr. Judith Sommer (played by Gesine Cukrowski ) and his friend, First Chief Inspector Johannes "Joe" Hoffer, head of the 2nd Murder Commission of the Berlin State Criminal Police Office, played by Jörg Gudzuhn .
Theresa Scholze played supporting roles as Kolmaar's daughter Anna, Hoffer's assistant Wolfgang Hölzermann ( Andreas Maria Schwaiger , 1998-2002), Max Kolditz ( Markus Majowski , 2000-2006) and Etzel Hanisch ( Daniel Krauss , 2004-2007), section assistant Fred Schröder ( Volker Ranisch ), the public prosecutors Dr. Harald Sänger ( Leonard Lansink ) and Dr. Tanja Rose ( Claudia Messner ), the head of the Institute for Forensic Medicine, Prof. Dr. Sigmar Bondzio ( Dieter Mann ) and his secretary Ulla Grünbein ( Renate Schroeter ), known as "Grünbeinchen".
In the last season (2007) there was support at the autopsy table: Dr. Nadja Heron ( Lavinia Wilson ), the Dr. Kolmaar not only stood by his side with unsolved murders. Commissioner Hoffer also got a new colleague, Superintendent Jockel Löw ( Dominique Horwitz ).
The individual episodes lasted between 40 and 45 minutes. The series lived not only from the genre-typical “ Whodunit ” (for example: “Who was it?”), But from the authenticity of the characters and the private love entanglements of the characters Robert Kolmaar and Judith Sommer.
Günther Fischer composed the music for the series . Most of the books were written by Gregor Edelmann , almost all of the episodes were directed by Bernhard Stephan .
All 73 episodes, spread over nine seasons, were released on DVD.
After the death of the main actor Mühe, both Gesine Cukrowski and Jörg Gudzuhn declared in November 2007 that they would not be available for further episodes. However, ZDF only officially moved away from a sequel in July 2008 and announced the discontinuation of the series.
