Markus Zusak

Markus Frank Zusak (born June 23, 1975 in Sydney ) is a German-Australian writer . He was primarily known for his works The Joker ( I am the Messenger ) and The Book Thief ( The Book Thief ). For both titles he and the translator Alexandra Ernst were awarded the German Youth Literature Prize of the Youth Jury (2007 and 2009).

Life

Zusak was born the youngest of four children. His mother is German and his father is Austrian who emigrated to Australia in the 1950s. He studied history and English at the University of New South Wales . His parents' stories about the bombing raids on Munich and the persecution of the Jews in World War II served as a template for the novel Die Bücherdiebin ( The Book Thief ). He now lives in Sydney with his family . In addition to his writing activities, he occasionally works as an English teacher at a high school .
