The novel Tanz mit dem Schafsmann is the sequel to Wilde Schafsjagd and begins chronologically four years after the end of the first novel. The first-person narrator does not let go of his trip to Hokkaido in 1978 and he decides to go to Sapporo again to stay at the Hotel Delfin again. When he gets there, however, he realizes that the once shabby hotel has now given way to an elegant new building, which is now called Hotel Dolphin . During his stay, the narrator reviews the events of that time and meets the strange sheepman from the first part of the story, who advises him to dance when the music is playing and not to stop. Since the narrator is bored in Sapporo and is also cold, he goes to the cinema several times to watch a second-rate film in which his former schoolmate Gotanda starred. He notices that his former lover Kiki, for whom he made the trip to Hokkaido, made a brief appearance in the film.

After returning to Tokyo, the narrator spends his free time driving Yumi, the thirteen-year-old daughter of a wealthy friend, in his Subaru. The narrator takes on the role of a mentor who supports the teenager with school problems and recommends a healthier diet. He also tries to give Yumi a good taste in music.

In Tokyo, the narrator also contacts Gotanda to find out more about Kiki, but he doesn't know much about her either. Call girl May, who lives with Gotanda, reveals to him that she once had a homosexual relationship with Kiki. A short time later, however, May is murdered and the narrator is suspected of murder because he had given her a business card.

After the police interrogate him and discover that he is innocent, the narrator takes Yumi on a trip to Hawaii, during which he sees and follows Kiki in a town. However, he does not manage to catch Kiki and so he returns home frustrated. Gotanda asked him to swap cars for a day. The narrator gets the sophisticated Maserati Gotanda, while Gotanda drives the narrator's inconspicuous Subaru.

Some time later Gotanda is found dead and his Maserati is recovered from the sea. Since Gotanda was suspected of murder, the investigation into the May case is closed.

The narrator loses his interest in Kiki and instead develops sexual interest in the receptionist at the Hotel Delfin. For this purpose he returns to Sapporo, where he sleeps with her.
