content

The jazz trombonist Shazaburo Takitani emigrated to China in 1933. There he leads a dissolute life with many relationships with women. After the end of World War II, he is forced to return to Japan. He marries a cousin there and has a child with her. Shortly after the birth of the son, the mother dies.

The son, Tony Takitani, develops into a closed but independent adult, while his father continues to work as a jazz trombonist. Tony studies at an art school and gets married.

Soon after getting married, his wife starts buying designer clothes excessively. She dies unexpectedly in a car accident.

Tony now hires a young woman who is supposed to sort the leftover clothes and who is also allowed to wear a piece of clothing from his deceased wife's wardrobe from time to time. In the end, however, Tony decides to sell the wardrobe.

When his father dies, he proceeds similarly with his leftover jazz records.
