Jun Ichikawa
Jun Ichikawa ( Japanese 市 川 準 , Ichikawa Jun ; born November 25, 1948 in Fuchū , Tokyo Prefecture ; † September 19, 2008 ibid) was a Japanese film director and screenwriter .
Ichikawa quit his job in 1981 and began very successfully directing commercials . In 1987 he was able to present his first directorial work in the film sector with Die Geisha Schülerin and was praised by critics for it. In the following years he established himself as an unconventional director on the Japanese film scene and was awarded several prizes. In 1991 he won the directing award at the Mainichi film competition for the film Tsugumi , a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Banana Yoshimoto . He received the same award again in 1994, this time for the film Byōin de Shinu to Iukoto .
His film dramas from the 1990s onwards were compared with the works of Yasujirō Ozus , who greatly influenced Ichikawa. With Tōkyō Kyōdai he turned a homage to Ozu in 1995.
His film Tokiwa-sō no Seishun is about the everyday life of some manga artists (including Fujio Akatsuka and Shōtarō Ishinomori ) in the famous Tokiwa-sō apartment. One of his most important works is the internationally acclaimed Tony Takitani based on a script by Haruki Murakami . Ichikawa won the 2004 FIPRESCI Prize and the Special Jury Prize at the Locarno International Film Festival for this film .
