Matthew "Matt" Cohen ( December 30, 1942 in Montreal , Québec - December 2, 1999 in Toronto ) was a Canadian writer who also published under the pseudonym Teddy Jam .

Life

Cohen was born in Montreal in 1942 and grew up in Kingston , Ontario . He studied political economy at the University of Toronto and taught political philosophy and religion at McMaster University in Hamilton , Ontario in the late 1960s , before publishing his first novel with Korsoniloff in 1969, which included numerous other novels and short stories, including for children and adults Teenagers, followed. Cohen published his books for children and young people under the pseudonym Teddy Jam , which was only discovered posthumously . Cohen wrote his own texts in English, but also translated works by French-Canadian authors into English.

In 1973 Cohen was a founding member of the Writers' Union of Canada , of which he was president in 1986, and was also involved in the Toronto Arts Council .

In 1999, a few weeks before his death, Cohen received the Governor General's Award for Fiction, the most prestigious Canadian literary prize, for his last novel, Elizabeth and After (Eng. The Letter ) .

Matt Cohen died of lung cancer in late 1999 in Toronto, Ontario . He left behind his wife Patsy Aldana and two children together. A younger brother of Cohen had also died of bronchial carcinoma in 1992; his death is in the background of his penultimate novel Last Seen (Eng. Last Encounter ) about the intense relationship between two brothers.

In honor of Cohen is the Writers' Trust of Canada of 25,000 annually since 2000 $ doped (as of 2019) Matt Cohen Prize awarded.
