Emotional Arithmetic is a Canadian film drama directed by Paolo Barzman from the year 2007 . It is based on the book of the same name by Matt Cohen . The main role was played by Susan Sarandon .

action

The film deals with the fates of three Holocaust survivors. During the Second World War, the Jewish author Jakob Bronski protected the English-speaking children Melanie and Christopher in the concentration camp in the French city of Drancy . Their ways parted when Jakob came to Auschwitz in their place.

Around forty years later, in 1985, Melanie is David Winters' wife. They are the parents of the now grown-up Benjamin, who in turn has a young son named Timmy. The winters marriage is strained by David's infidelity. Christopher, Melanie's friend and fellow sufferer from childhood, and Jakob visit Melanie in their home in the Québec countryside . Christopher suffers from the fact that he survived the Nazi atrocities. Melanie feels like a witness to the events of that time, which must not be forgotten. Jealousy awakens in David when a love story looms. On a summer evening, the characters in black and white flashbacks try to cope with the tormenting memories of the past and their psychological wounds and to find a way into a better future.
