Gilles Archambault (born September 19, 1933 in Montreal ) is a French-Canadian writer .

Life

Studies, radio producer and debut as a novelist

After attending school, Archambault completed an undergraduate degree at the Collège Sainte-Marie de Montréal and graduated with a Baccalauréat . A subsequent study of literature at the University of Montreal , he finished in 1957 with a licentiate ( License en Lettre ). He then worked for Radio Canada , where he worked as a radio producer and commentator between 1963 and 1992.

In 1963 he published his first novel , Une Suprême Discrétion , in which the disaffected hero solves his problems through suicide . Shortly afterwards, the next novel, La Vie à trois (1963), appeared in which Archambault developed the same themes: the difficulties of living with a partner, the lack of conversation, loneliness. After Le Tendre Matin (1969) was followed by six more novels that explored these issues, including La Fleur aux dents (1971), in 1975 after a screenplay by Pierre Turgeon of the state film agency ONF ( Office national du film du Canada ) was filmed.

Literary works and awards

The short story collection Enfances lointaines (1972) was followed by the two radio pieces Le Tricycle and Bud Cole Blues (1974). Together with Jacques Brault and François Ricard , he was managing director of the publishing house Les Éditions du Sentier between 1978 and 1986 . The prosaic works Stupeurs (1979) and Les Plaisirs de la mélancolie (1980) were also created during this time . In 1984 he published a collection of texts called Le Regard oblique , in which he cast a humorous, weird look at the pitfalls of writing. In 1981 he was awarded the Prix ​​Athanase-David and in 1987 the Prize of the Governor General ( Prix ​​du Gouverneur général ).

Since then, Archambault has continued to explore his personal space and individuality, including topics such as childhood, memory, love, aging and being alone. Works of that time included Premier amour (1988), Les Choses d'un jour (1991), Enfances lointaines, nouvelles (1992) and Un Après-midi de septembre (1993). Other notable works from this period were the works Nouvelles chroniques matinales (1994) and Dernières chroniques matinales (1996), written for Radio Canada's cultural program , in which he was also able to present himself as a leading jazz expert.

In the following years the novels Un Homme plein d'enfance (1996), Les Maladresses du coeur (1998), Courir à sa perte (2000), Comme une panthère noire (2001), De si douces dérives (2003), La vie à trois (2004) and De l'autre côté du pont (2004).
